Quantitative analysis of autoradiographic image intensification using Thiourea-S35

Photographic images enhanced by the method of Thiourea-S35 autoradiography are evaluated in terms of signal-to-noise ratio, detective quantum efficiency (DQE), and Wiener spectrum analysis using digitized images. It is determined that the original signal-to-noise ratio is not degraded by the intensification process which allows an increase in the practical working DQE as a function of density. These results apply at all spatial frequencies that were tested. The advantage given by autoradiography is the ability to produce usable images from emulsions originally exposed to the low densities corresponding to maximum DQE and movement of faint image densities above the level of the threshold for detection.

The Space Telescope Observatory

The Space Telescope is an international astronomical observatory which will be placed into a low earth orbit in December 1983. The observatory will provide astronomers the opportunity to use five different instruments (wide field/planetary camera, faint object camera, high-resolution spectrograph, faint-object spectrograph, and high speed photometer), and to do astrometry with the use of the fine guidance sensors used primarily for pointing control. These instruments, the spectral range available above the earth's atmosphere, and the spatial resolution available from the combination of a near-diffraction limited 94-in. primary mirror and the stability provided by the Pointing Control System provide a tremendous potential to the astronomical community.

Post-development image intensification by autoradiography

A method of post-development intensification of photographic images using a newly developed autoradiographic procedure is described. Radioactive Thiourea-S35 is combined with silver in the developed emulsion, which is then contact printed with a receiver emulsion. The beta decay from S35 produces an enhanced autoradiographic image. The laboratory technique is described and results of astronomical applications are presented.

Statistical equilibrium in cometary C2. II - Swan/Phillips band ratios

Statistical equilibrium calculations have been made for both the triplet and ground state singlets for C2 in comets, using the exchange rate as a free parameter. The predictions of the results are consistent with optical observations and may be tested definitively by accurate observations of the Phillips and Swan band ratios. Comparison with the one reported observation indicates compatibility with a low exchange rate and resonance fluorescence statistical equilibrium.

The Space Telescope Observatory

A convenient guide to the expected characteristics of the Space Telescope Observatory for astronomers and physicists is presented. An attempt is made to provide enough detail so that a professional scientist, observer or theorist, can plan how the observatory may be used to further his observing programs or to test theoretical models.

An internal velocity study of the Rosette Nebula

Emission-line profiles of H-alpha were studied at about 700 points in the Rosette Nebula by using a multislit echelle spectrograph. Numerical analysis of the profiles indicates that variations in the line-of-sight velocity occur within the nebula, reaching about + or - 20 km/s in the inner regions. Evidence is presented that these highest velocities are more probably inward, favoring a model where the central cavity is due to a depletion resulting from rapid star formation

The Space Telescope - A giant step in astronomy

The astronomer's capacity for observation will be tremendously enhanced by NASA's Space Telescope, a multipurpose optical telescope in earth orbit which will enable man to gaze seven times farther into space than has now been done, possibly to the outer edges of the universe. The Space Telescope is to be placed in orbit in 1983 by the NASA Space Shuttle. The turbulence of the earth atmosphere imposes practical limitations in all but a very few types of astronomical observations conducted on the surface of the earth. The Space Telescope, high above the hazy and turbulent atmosphere, will enable scientists to see the heavens clearly for the first time. The Space Telescope is a superb system that fully exploits the advantages of space observations and will dramatically extend the astronomer's capabilities beyond ground-based telescopes.

Statistical equilibrium in cometary C2. I

Swan-band emission from the C2 molecule provides important information for a study of the physical processes occurring in comets. It is, therefore, a disturbing factor that many quantitative Swan-band observations are in clear contradiction of predictions of resonance fluorescence excitation of the Swan bands. A description is presented of an investigation involving an application of resonance fluorescence theory to C2. The investigation takes into account all important electronic transitions which determine the population distribution of the lowest energy states. It is found that the previous discrepancy for the brighter band sequences disappears.

The Space Telescope

The Space Telescope is a NASA program intended to launch a long-lived 2.4 meter astronomical observatory in 1983. It will contain optical and pointing systems producing a resolution of at least 0.1 arc seconds over periods of 10 hours. This capability will allow a new regime of imaging astronomical observations to be undertaken from below Lyman-alpha to the millimeter wavelength range. The optical, optical metering structure, pointing and guidance system, and control system will be described.

Spectrographic observations of comet West /1975 n/

The spectrum of comet West (1975 n) was recorded on March 7 and 11, 1976, in the wavelength interval from 5700 to 8200 A at an intermediate resolution. One hundred twenty-two emission lines are reported, with 78 lines having identifications with spectral features of NH2, H2O(+), C2, O I forbidden emission, and Na I.

Space Telescope science program

The advantages of an orbiting astronomical observatory are discussed. The principal consequence of having the telescope in space is that more light will be concentrated in the images, which has two effects: (1) the ability to view more accurately complex sources, and (2) the ability to detect and measure extremely faint point sources. The fact that higher resolution will reveal complex and unexpected detail is demonstrated by comparing a well-known astronomical scene with an image artifically degraded. Five scientific functions are envisaged for the Space Telescope. The first flight will feature performance of four of these functions with these four pieces of equipment: the f24 field camera, the faint object spectrograph, the infrared photometer, and the faint object camera. Astrometry will be done not by any specialized scientific instrument but with the fine guidance and pointing system.

Physical processes in Comet Kohoutek

Observational results are brought together to establish the mass loss of Comet Kohoutek (1973 XII) in H2O, solid particles, and other molecules. The production rate of molecules is seen to have flattened prior to peaking near perihelion passage, and then fell below the rate for the incoming branch of the orbit. The total mass loss was about 10 to the 14th power gm. All abundances are consistent with a clathrate-dominant form of water. Comparison of the sizes of the nucleus as calculated from photometry and the rate of water loss requires that either an unrealistically high albedo be assumed or that only a portion of the nucleus was covered by water, in contrast with previous expectations for a new and probable first-passage comet. Moreover, if the preperihelion estimates of the nuclear brightness are rejected as being contaminated, the resulting values indicate an ice-covered nucleus with a radius of 2.1 km.

Review comments of shuttle-based cometary experiments

The experiments considered are in two groups: on-board experiments and overboard experiments. The on-board experiments include the determination of bulk properties and processes (within solids) and observations of exposure panels (near surface phenomena) The overboard experiments consist of analysis of gas/dust shells by observation from the shuttle and observation by sub-satellites. Experimental parameters are discussed with emphasis on work that is unique to low gravity and high vacuum environments.

Interpretation of the anti-tail of Comet Kohoutek as a particle flow phenomenon

The appearance of a 'sunward' spike, opposite in apparent orientation to the normal Type-II tail in Comet Kohoutek is interpreted as evidence for large particles ejected near perihelion. It is shown that the shape and orientation can be satisfactorily explained in this manner, after consideration of the increased mass flow at decreasing heliocentric distance. The apparent length of the spike can be a measure of the particle size and density, and a value of about 0.004 g/sq cm for the product of particle size and density fits the Skylab observations.

Spectrophotometry of comets

Photoelectric spectrophotometric- and image tube equipped spectrographic-studies on comets are used to formulate a new model for the cometary nucleus that is physically similar to the icy-conglomerate. Absolute flux distributions of the principal spectral features for five comets of different compositions and heliocentric distances were evaluated. Comparison of visible and infrared brightnesses was used to calculate the optical albedos of observed particles.
