Nonvented Filling Of A Cryogenic Tank

Chilling before filling reduces ullage. Report describes experiments on nonvented filling of tank designed to store cryogenic liquids. Experiments showed if tank first chilled and evacuated, it can then be filled to more than 90 percent of its capacity without venting, provided conditions of chilling, initial tank pressure, and filling chosen properly. Developed for space applications, also useful in ground-based operations where venting impractical or hazardous.

Tunable Microwave Cavity For Ion Source

Movable probe and tuning wall adjusted to obtain resonance at microwave frequency used to generate plasma in cell at one end of microwave cavity. Electroless discharge without disadvantages of dc-cathode-discharge and RF-induction methods. To achieve precise positioning, coaxial probe extends into microwave cavity through tube.

Space environmental considerations for a long-term cryogenic storage vessel

Information is given on the kind of protection that is needed against impact and perforation of a long-term cryogenic storage vessel in space by meteoroids and space debris. The long-term effects of the space environment on thermal control surfaces and coatings, and the question of whether the insulation and thermal control surfaces should be encased in a vacuum jacket shell are discussed.

Precision tunable resonant microwave cavity

A tunable microwave cavity containing ionizable metallic vapor or gases and an apparatus for precisely positioning a microwave coupling tip in the cavity and for precisely adjusting at least one dimension of the cavity are disclosed. With this combined structure, resonance may be achieved with various types of ionizable gases. A coaxial probe extends into a microwave cavity through a tube. One end of the tube is retained in a spherical joint attached in the cavity wall. This allows the coaxial probe to be pivotally rotated. The coaxial probe is slideable within the tube thus allowing the probe to be extended toward or retracted from the center of the cavity.

Experimental Evaluation of Steady-State Control Properties of an Electron-Bombardment Ion Thrustor

Examined in this report are the experimental steady-state gains, or changes, in beam-current output with changes in thrustor inputs for a 10-centimeter-diameter electron-bombardment ion thrustor. A general leveling off of beam current as a function of an input variable was found at the upper range of each variable, At the design operating point, the filament-heating current exhibited the greatest sensitivity, or percentage beam-current output change for a percentage change in the input (2 to 4). Accelerator voltage showed the least effect (0.04) while discharge voltage, magnetic field, and neutral propellant flow exhibited about the same sensitivity (0.4 to 0.5). Some effects of nonlinearity are shown that may require consideration in the design of a closed-loop control system.

Effect of design changes and operating conditions on combustion and operational performance of a 28-inch diameter Ram-jet engine / T. B. Shillito and Shigeo Nakanishi

The results of an altitude test-chamber investigation of the effects of a number of design changes and operating conditions on altitude peformance of a 28-inch diameter ram jet engine are presented. Most of the investigation was for a simulated flight Mach number of 2.0 above the tropopause. Fuel-air distribution, gutter width, the presence of a pilot flame, cimbustion-chamber-inlet temperature, and exhaust-nozzle throat area were found to have significant effects on limits of combustion. Combustion efficiency increased with increasing combustion-chamber-inlet temperature and was adversely affected by an increase in the exhaust-nozzld area. Similiar lean limits of combustion were obtained for both Diesel fuel and normal heptane, but combustion efficiences obtained with Diesel fuel were lower than those obtained with normal heptane.
