Estimating Soil Moisture in a Boreal Old Jack Pine Forest

Polarimetric L- and P-band AIRSAR data, corresponding model simulations, and classification algorithms have shown that in a boreal old jack pine (OJP) stand, the principal scattering mechanism responsible for radar backscatter is the double-bounce mechanism between the tree trunks and the ground.

(abstract) Using an Inversion Algorithm to Retrieve Parameters and Monitor Changes over Forested Areas from SAR Data

In this work, the application of an inversion algorithm based on a nonlinear opimization technique to retrieve forest parameters from multifrequency polarimetric SAR data is discussed. The approach discussed here allows for retrieving and monitoring changes in forest parameters in a quantative and systematic fashion using SAR data. The parameters to be inverted directly from the data are the electromagnetic scattering properties of the forest components such as their dielectric constants and size characteristics. Once these are known, attributes such as canopy moisture content can be obtained, which are useful in the ecosystem models.

Estimation of Boreal Forest Biomass Using Spaceborne SAR Systems

In this paper, we report on the use of a semiempirical algorithm derived from a two layer radar backscatter model for forest canopies. The model stratifies the forest canopy into crown and stem layers, separates the structural and biometric attributes of the canopy. The structural parameters are estimated by training the model with polarimetric SAR (synthetic aperture radar) data acquired over homogeneous stands with known above ground biomass. Given the structural parameters, the semi-empirical algorithm has four remaining parameters, crown biomass, stem biomass, surface soil moisture, and surface rms height that can be estimated by at least four independent SAR measurements. The algorithm has been used to generate biomass maps over the entire images acquired by JPL AIRSAR and SIR-C SAR systems. The semi-empirical algorithms are then modified to be used by single frequency radar systems such as ERS-1, JERS-1, and Radarsat. The accuracy. of biomass estimation from single channel radars is compared with the case when the channels are used together in synergism or in a polarimetric system.

Retrieval of Forest Canopy Parameters for OTTER Using an Optimized Technique

An inversion algorithm based on a nonlinear optimization technique is used to retrieve a subset of forest canopy parameters that can be used in ecosystem modeling. The inversion algorithm uses a parametric model derived from a discrete component forest scattering model which includes all major scattering contributions to radar backscatter. The parametric model, however, is derived for cases where only one mechanism dominates the scattering process, in this case, branch layer volume scattering. The inversion algorithm is shown to be a useful tool in the quantative monitoring of canopy moisture status, as well as a building block of its future versions which will include a more comprehensive set of forest scattering parameters as unknowns.
