A light-induced microwave oscillator

We describe a novel oscillator that converts continuous light energy into sta ble and spectrally pure microwave signals. This light-induced microwave oscillator (LIMO) consists of a pump laser and a feedback circuit, including an intensity modulator, an optical fiber delay line, a photodetector, an amplifier, and a filter. We develop a quasilinear theory and obtain expressions for the threshold condition, the amplitude, the frequency, the line width, and the spectral power density of the oscillation. We also present experimental data to compare with the theoretical results. Our findings indicate that the LIMO can generate ultrastable, spectrally pure microwave reference signals up to 75 GHz with a phase noise lower than -140 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz.

A novel photonic oscillator

We report a novel oscillator for photonic RF systems. This oscillator is capable of generating high-frequency signals up to 70 GHz in both electrical and optical domains and is a special voltage-controlled oscillator with an optical output port. It can be used to make a phase-locked loop (PLL) and perform all functions that a PLL is capable of for photonic systems. It can be synchronized to a reference source by means of optical injection locking, electrical injection locking, and PLL. It can also be self-phase locked and self-injection locked to generate a high-stability photonic RF reference. Its applications include high-frequency reference regeneration and distribution, high-gain frequency multiplication, comb-frequecy and square-wave generation, carrier recovery, and clock recovery. We anticipate that such photonic voltage-controlled oscillators (VCOs) will be as important to photonic RF systems as electrical VCOs are to electrical RF systems.

A Novel Photonic Clock and Carrier Recovery Device

In high-speed fiber-optic communications systems, the ability to recover the clock from the incoming random data is essential. The recovered clock must be in precise synchronism with the incoming data and is used in further signal processing systems, such as regenerative repeaters, time division switching systems, and demultiplexers. A high-speed photonic clock regenerator is described.

Light Induced Microwave Oscillator

A novel oscillator that converts continuous light energy into stable and spectrally pure microwave signals is described. This Light Induced Microwave Oscillator (LIMO) consists of a pump laser and a feedback circuit including an intensity modulator, an optical fiber delay line, photodetector, amplifier, and a filter. A Quasi-linear theory is developed. Resulting expressions of parameters are given.

Efficient Quenching of Population Trapping in Excited Yb(+)

We report on a study to determine the efficiency of various buffer gases in quenching the population trapping states of laser-excited ytterbium ions. The ions were confined in an rf-dc hybrid trap, and their (2)S(.5) left and right arrow (2)P(3/2) transition was excited with 329-nm laser light. Buffer gases used include H2, N2, CO2, Ar, and He at several different pressure regimes. We have identified N2 to be highly efficient in quenching the population of the trapping states and thus be the most suitable buffer gas to use with ytterbium for the development of a trapped-ion microwave frequency standard.

Influence of an externally modulated photonic link on a microwave communications system

We analyze the influence of an externally modulated photonic link on the performance of a microwave communications system. From the analysis, we deduce limitations on the photocurrent, magnitude of the relaxation oscillation noise of the laser, third-order intercept point of the preamplifier, and other parameters in order for the photonic link to function according to the system specifications. Based on this, we outline a procedure for designing a photonic link that can be integrated in a system with minimal performance degradation.

Field Demonstration of Photonic Antenna Remoting at X-Band in the NASA Deep Space Network

We report on the successful demonstration of antenna remoting at X-band using a low phase noise and high dynamic range fiber optic link in an operating antenna receiving system, while tracking Magellan spacecraft. The insertion of the fiber link into the existing system adds no observable degradation in noise temperature to the system. We compare the experimental results with our theoretical predictions of degradations in noise temperature and dynamic range of the system caused by the insertion of the fiber link.

Hetrodyne Laser Tracking at High Doppler Rates

In hetrodyne laser tracking of a spacecraft, the incoming laser signal may be significantly offset from the local laser reference, producing a high-frequency beat note that must be accurately counted to produce an accurate phase measurement.

Efficient Quenching of Population Trapping in Excited Yb superscript +

The efficiency of various buffer gases in quenching the population trapping states of laser excited ytterbium ions is described. Highly efficient in quenching the population of the trapping states, N subscript 2 has been identified as the most suitable buffer gas to use with ytterbium for the development i=of a trapped ion microwave frequency standard.
