Recent results with coupled opto-electronic oscillator

We present experimental results of coupled opto-electronic oscillators (COEO) constructed with a semiconductor optical amplifier based ring laser, a semiconductor Fabry-Perot laser, and a semiconductor colliding pulse mode-locked laser.

Phase Noise of Optical Interference in Photonic RF Systems

Close-in optical interferometric noise spectrum and its conversion to RF close-in phase noise are theoretically and experimentally studied. The study also indicates that reflective type devices and optically amplified links enhance the interferometric phase noise degradation.

Clock Technology Development for the Laser Cooling and Atomic Physics (LCAP) Program

The Time and Frequency Sciences and Technology Group at Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) has developed a laser cooling capability for flight and has been selected by NASA to support the Laser-Cooling and Atomic Physics (LCAP) program. Current work in the group includes design and development for tee two laser-cooled atomic clock experiments which have been selected for flight on the International Space Station.

An All-Optical Microwave Mixer with 8db RF Gain

An all-optical microwave mixer with an 8dB RF gain is demonstrated by using a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA). 6GHz RF signal on a 1312 nm optical carrier is up-converted and down-converted to 1GHZ and 11 GHz by a 5GHz local oscillation (LO) signal on a 1320 nm optical carrier. Such a carrier could readily extend to millimeter wave range.

Brillouin Amplification--A Powerful New Scheme for Microwave Photonic Communications

We introduce the Brillouin selective sideband amplification technique and demonstrate many important applications of this technique in photonic microwave systems, including efficient phase modulation to amplitude modulation conversion, photonic frequency multiplication, photonic signal mixing with gain, and frequency multiplied signal up conversion.

The JPL Hg(sup +) Extended Linear Ion Trap Frequency Standard: Status, Stability, and Accuracy Prospects

Microwave frequency standards based on room temperature (sup 199)Hg(sup +) ions in a Linear Ion Trap (LITS) presently achieve a Signal to Noise and line Q inferred short frequency stability. Long term stability has been measured for averaging intervals up to 5 months with apparent sensitivity to variations in ion number/temperature limiting the flicker floor.

Opto-Electronic Oscillator and its Applications

We present the theoretical and experimental results of a new class of microwave oscillators called opto-electronic oscillators (OEO). We discuss techniques of achieving high stability single mode operation and demonstrate the applications of OEO in photonic communication systems.

A New Class Of Opto-Electronic Oscillators (OEO) for Microwave Signal Generation and Processing

A new class of oscillators based on photonic devices is presented. These opto-electronic oscillators (OEO's) generate microwave oscillation by converting continuous energy from a light source using a feedback circuit which includes a delay element, and electro-optic switch, and a photodetector. Different configurations of OEO's are presented, each of which may be applied to a particular application requiring ultra-high performance, or low cost and small size.
