Infrared predetection dynamic range compression via photorefractive crystals

The theoretical basis and practical implementation of a predetection dynamic-range compression technique for IR sensor systems are discussed. The approach takes advantage of the nonlinear intensity dependence of the gain coefficient in photorefractive crystals. Its feasibility is demonstrated in numerical computations using the experimental data of Cheng and Partovi (1986) on two-wave mixing in GaAs at 1.15 micron wavelength.

Gray scale operation of a multichannel optical convolver using the Semetex magnetooptic spatial light modulator

A new multichannel optical correlator/convolver architecture which uses an acoustooptic light modulator for the input channel and a Semetex magnetooptic spatial light modulator (MOSLM) for the set of parallel reference channels is presented. Details of the anamorphic optical system are discussed. Experimental results illustrate the use of the system as a convolver for performing digital multiplication by analog convolution (DMAC). A limited gray scale capability for data stored by the MOSLM is demonstrated by implementing this DMAC algorithm with trinary logic. Use of the MOSLM allows the number of parallel channels for the convolver to be increased significantly compared with previously reported techniques while retaining the capability for updating both channels at high speeds.

Spatial light modulation by beam coupling in GaAs crystals

The first demonstration of spatial light modulation in GaAs using the photorefractive effect is reported. A special configuration was employed in which polarization rotation created by beam coupling was utilized. The ability to obtain these results despite a small coupling gain coefficient demonstrates the usefulness of the polarization technique presented here for optical processing with GaAs crystals.

Multichannel optical correlator/convolver utilizing the magnetooptic spatial light modulator

The paper describes a multichannel correlator/convolver architecture utilizing an acoustooptic light modulator for the one dimensional channel and a magnetooptic spatial light modulator (MOSLM) for the second two-dimensional parallel channel. The MOSLM allows greater parallelism to be implemented in this correlator/convolver design than was previously reported. The implementation of 24 parallel channels with a 48 x 48 device is demonstrated. Experimental data are presented and the ways of increasing the number of parallel channels using commercially available MOSLMs and other previously discussed techniques, such as frequency multiplexing, are discussed. It is shown that over 2000 parallel channels are possible at 32-bit accuracy. A technique for obtaining a limited gray scale is also discussed.

Simplified dichromated gelatin hologram recording process

A simplified method for making dichromated gelatin (DCG) holographic optical elements (HOE) has been discovered. The method is much less tedious and it requires a period of processing time comparable with that for processing a silver halide hologram. HOE characteristics including diffraction efficiency (DE), linearity, and spectral sensitivity have been quantitatively investigated. The quality of the holographic grating is very high. Ninety percent or higher diffraction efficiency has been achieved in simple plane gratings made by this process.

The papers presented in this volume provide an overview of current research in both optical and digital pattern recognition, with a theme of identifying overlapping research problems and methodologies. Topics discussed include image analysis and low-level vision, optical system design, object analysis and recognition, real-time hybrid architectures and algorithms, high-level image understanding, and optical matched filter design. Papers are presented on synthetic estimation filters for a control system; white-light correlator character recognition; optical AI architectures for intelligent sensors; interpreting aerial photographs by segmentation and search; and optical information processing using a new photopolymer.

Achromatic optical correlator for white light pattern recognition

An achromatic optical correlator using spatially multiplexed achromatic matched spatial filters (MSFs) for white light optical pattern recognition is presented. The MSF array is synthesizd using a monochromatic laser and its achromaticity is achieved by adjusting the scale and spatial carrier frequency of each MSF to accommodate the wavelength variations in white light correlation detections. Systems analysis and several experimental results showing the correlation peak intensity using white-light illumination are presented.

Real-time computer-generated hologram by means of liquid-crystal television spatial light modulator

The usefulness of an inexpensive liquid-crystal television) (LCTV) as a spatial light modulator for coherent-optical processing in the writing and reconstruction of a single computer-generated hologram has been demonstrated. The thickness nonuniformities of the LCTV screen were examined in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer, and the phase distortions were successfully removed using a technique in which the LCTV screen was submerged in a liquid gate filled with an index-matching nonconductive mineral oil with refractive index of about 1.45.

Large TV display system

A relatively small and low cost system is provided for projecting a large and bright television image onto a screen. A miniature liquid crystal array is driven by video circuitry to produce a pattern of transparencies in the array corresponding to a television image. Light is directed against the rear surface of the array to illuminate it, while a projection lens lies in front of the array to project the image of the array onto a large screen. Grid lines in the liquid crystal array are eliminated by a spacial filter which comprises a negative of the Fourier transform of the grid.

Optical image subtraction techniques, 1975-1985

Real- and nonreal-time optical image subtraction (OIS) techniques are reviewed. Real-time OIS techniques include source encoding, polarization modulation, pseudocolor image difference detection, the holographic shear lens technique, and nonlinear optics. Included in the nonreal-time category are speckle diffuser encoding, speckle-pattern encoding, halftone screen encoding, and polarization-shifted encoding. It is concluded that the most useful techniques are the real-time operations. It is noted that some nonreal-time optical techniques can be applied directly while others may be converted into real-time ones through the use of advance real-time spatial light modulators or electrooptic devices.

Real-time optical multiple-object recognition and tracking demonstration: A friendly challenge to the digital field

Researchers demonstrated the first optical multiple object tracking system. The system is capable of simultaneous tracking of multiple objects, each with independent movements in real-time, limited only to the TV frame rate (30 msec). In order to perform a similar tracking operation, a large computer system and very complex software would be needed. Although researchers have demonstrated the tracking of only 3 objects, the system capacity can easily be expanded by 2 orders of magnitude.
