Real-time image difference detection using a polarization rotation spacial light modulator

An image difference detection system is described, of the type wherein two created image representations such as transparencies representing the images to be compared lie coplanar, while light passes through the two transparencies and is formed into coincident images at the image plane for comparison. The two transparencies are formed by portions of a polarization rotation spacial light modulator display such as a multi-pixel liquid crystal display or a magneto optical rotation type. In a system where light passing through the two transparencies is polarized in transverse directions to enable the use of a Wollaston prism to bring the images into coincidence, a liquid crystal display can be used which is devoid of polarizing sheets that would interfere with transverse polarizing of the light passing through the two transparencies.

The optical implementation of inner product neural associative memory

A liquid-crystal TV spatial light modulator (LCTV SLM) input device and LCTV nonlinear thresholding element are presently used to accomplish an all-optical implementation of an inner-product neural associative memory. This architecture represents an alternative to the vector-matrix multiplication method of the Hopfield model, which is most often employed by neural network associative memory models. LCTV SLM experimental results are presented and discussed.

Achromatical Optical Correlator

Signal-to-noise ratio exceeds that of monochromatic correlator. Achromatical optical correlator uses multiple-pinhole diffraction of dispersed white light to form superposed multiple correlations of input and reference images in output plane. Set of matched spatial filters made by multiple-exposure holographic process, each exposure using suitably-scaled input image and suitable angle of reference beam. Recording-aperture mask translated to appropriate horizontal position for each exposure. Noncoherent illumination suitable for applications involving recognition of color and determination of scale. When fully developed achromatical correlators will be useful for recognition of patterns; for example, in industrial inspection and search for selected features in aerial photographs.

Dynamic-Range Compression For Infrared Imagery

Photorefractive crystals covering detectors prevent saturation. To make full use of information in image, desirable to compress dynamic range of input intensity to within region of approximately linear response of detector. Dynamic-range compression exhibited by measurements of attenuation in photorefractive GaAs. Effective dynamic-range-compressor plate, film, or coating reduces apparent contrast of scene imaged on detector plane to within dynamic range of detectors; original image contrast or intensity data recovered subsequently in electronic image processing because range-compression function and inverse known.

Machine parts recognition using a trinary associative memory

The convergence mechanism of vectors in Hopfield's neural network in relation to recognition of partially known patterns is studied in terms of both inner products and Hamming distance. It has been shown that Hamming distance should not always be used in determining the convergence of vectors. Instead, inner product weighting coefficients play a more dominant role in certain data representations for determining the convergence mechanism. A trinary neuron representation for associative memory is found to be more effective for associative recall. Applications of the trinary associative memory to reconstruct machine part images that are partially missing are demonstrated by means of computer simulation as examples of the usefulness of this approach.

Liquid-Crystal Optical Correlator

Optical correlator uses commercially-available liquid-crystal television (LCTV) screen as spatial light modulator. Correlations with this device done at video frame rates, making such operations as bar-code recognition possible at reasonable cost. With further development, such correlator useful in automation, robotic vision, and optical image processing.

Acousto-optical/Magneto-optical Correlator Or Convolver

Experimental system demonstrates optical processing of multiple channels of binary signals. One input channel contains signal that varies with time and applied to one-dimensional acousto-optical cell. Other input channel contains two-dimensional pattern that is stationary or can vary with time and applied to magneto-optical spatial light modulator. Output is time-varying correlation or convolution of first input with one of rows in second input.

Real-time optical holographic tracking of multiple objects

A coherent optical correlation technique for real-time simultaneous tracking of several different objects making independent movements is described, and experimental results are presented. An evaluation of this system compared with digital computing systems is made. The real-time processing capability is obtained through the use of a liquid crystal television spatial light modulator and a dichromated gelatin multifocus hololens. A coded reference beam is utilized in the separation of the output correlation plane associated with each input target so that independent tracking can be achieved.

Optical multiple object tracking techniques

Two multichannel multiple-object tracking techniques are reviewed. In the diffraction grating technique, the input scene is picked up by a TV camera and imaged onto a liquid-crystal light valve (LCLV), and the output side of the light valve is illuminated with a suitably polarized and collimated coherent laser beam to yield a reflected beam with polarization modulated according to the intensity of the incoherent input. This reflected beam passes through a beam splitter cube and an analyzer, resulting in an intensity modulated coherent image. An array of spectrum islands containing the information of the input appears after crossing a contact screen/lens combination. In the multiple-focus hololens technique, the scene of moving objects is sent into the LCTVSLM through a camera; a collimated laser beam is incident upon the LCTV screen; a low-pass filter is inserted between the LCTVSLM and the hololens for the removal of the high order diffractions due to the grid structure of the LCTV. The feasibility of the LCTVSLM and multiple-focus hololens technique is demonstrated.

Liquid-Crystal-Television Image Subtracters

Two image-subtraction systems from output images that show differences between input images of two objects. First: differences appear as bright regions in otherwise dark output image. Second: differences and similarities shown by colors. All parts of two images processed simultaneously by optical components only; digital electronic processing of data not required. Concept offers potential for rapid, inexpensive comparison of images in such applications as automatic inspection, medical diagnosis, and robotic vision.

Real-time optical image processing techniques

Nonlinear real-time optical processing on spatial pulse frequency modulation has been pursued through the analysis, design, and fabrication of pulse frequency modulated halftone screens and the modification of micro-channel spatial light modulators (MSLMs). Micro-channel spatial light modulators are modified via the Fabry-Perot method to achieve the high gamma operation required for non-linear operation. Real-time nonlinear processing was performed using the halftone screen and MSLM. The experiments showed the effectiveness of the thresholding and also showed the needs of higher SBP for image processing. The Hughes LCLV has been characterized and found to yield high gamma (about 1.7) when operated in low frequency and low bias mode. Cascading of two LCLVs should also provide enough gamma for nonlinear processing. In this case, the SBP of the LCLV is sufficient but the uniformity of the LCLV needs improvement. These include image correlation, computer generation of holograms, pseudo-color image encoding for image enhancement, and associative-retrieval in neural processing. The discovery of the only known optical method for dynamic range compression of an input image in real-time by using GaAs photorefractive crystals is reported. Finally, a new architecture for non-linear multiple sensory, neural processing has been suggested.

Report reviews optical image subtraction techniques developed during years 1975 through 1985. Useful in such disciplines as studies of earth resources, meteorology, automatic surveillance, pattern recognition, studies of urban growth, and compression of bandwidth in communication systems. Describes following real-time techniques: source encoding, polarization modulation, pseudocolor image-difference detection, holographic-shear-lens technique, and nonlinear electro-optics. Reported non-real-time image-subtraction techniques are following, all of which involve intensity subtraction: speckle-diffuser encoding, speckle-pattern encoding, halftone-screen encoding, and polarization-shifted carrier encoding. Optical pseudocolor image enhancement with real-time large screen display

A real-time broadband pseudocolor image enhancement technique using a liquid crystal television spatial light modulator (LCTV SLM) is described. Three different schemes to modulate the gray-scale disribution of an input scene by an LCTV SLM through varying the orientations of its analyzer are presented. These schemes are incorporated into a compact white light optical projection system that is able to display, on a large screen, broadband pseudocolor images of real-world input scenes. Experimental results demonstrating the feasibility of the technique are reported.
