Scalable DAQ system operating the CHIPS-5 neutrino detector

The CHIPS R&D project focuses on development of low-cost water Cherenkov neutrino detectors through novel design strategies and resourceful engineering. This work presents an end-to-end DAQ solution intended for a recent 5 kt CHIPS prototype, which is largely based on affordable mass-produced components. Much like the detector itself, the presented instrumentation is composed of modular arrays that can be scaled up and easily serviced. A single such array can carry up to 30 photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) accompanied by electronics that generate high voltage in-situ and deliver time resolution of up to 0.69 ns. In addition, the technology is compatible with the White Rabbit timing system, which can synchronize its elements to within 100 ps. While deployment issues did not permit the presented DAQ system to operate beyond initial evaluation, the presented hardware and software successfully passed numerous commissioning tests that demonstrated their viability for use in a large-scale neutrino detector, instrumented with thousands of PMTs.

A comprehensive study on two types of supercapacitor composite electrodes comprising MnO 2 and activated carbon nanofibers: Self-supporting membrane and ground powder

Manganese dioxide (MnO 2 )@carbon composites have been attractively considered as electrode materials for supercapacitors (SCs) due to synergistic effects. This work systematically investigated the structure of MnO 2 @carbon nanofiber (CNF) composite electrodes with the different forms of CNFs and the corresponding electrochemical performance of SCs. In brief, novel activated carbon nanofibers were first fabricated by electrospinning the hydroxyl-containing poly(amic acid) solution, and then the preferred CNF material was decorated by MnO 2 crystals in the form of self-supporting membrane and ground powders, respectively. Additionally, the synthesis parameters were investigated and optimized based on the electrochemical performance of SCs. The results reveal that the powdered composite electrode exhibits a higher specific surface area of 501 m 2 g –1 compared to the self-supporting membrane composite electrode under the same conditions, resulting in a promising specific capacity of 214.1 mAh g –1 (770.8 Fg –1 ) in 6M KOH solution at 0.5 A g –1 . In addition, the capacitance of the symmetrical SC device assembled by G-HMC-1:3–80 reaches 179.8 Fg –1 , coupled with an energy density of 24.86 Whkg –1 at 230 Wkg –1 power density. This work provides valuable hints for designing SC composite electrode materials with outstanding performance.

Global nitrogen and sulfur deposition mapping using a measurement–model fusion approach

Abstract. Global reactive nitrogen (N) deposition has more than tripled since 1860 and is expected to remain high due to food production and fossil fuel consumption. Global sulfur emissions have been decreasing worldwide over the last 30 years, but many regions are still experiencing unhealthily high levels of deposition. We update the 2010 global deposition budget for reactive nitrogen and sulfur components with new regional wet deposition measurements from Asia, improving the ensemble results of 11 global chemistry transport models from the second phase of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe's Task Force on Hemispheric Transport of Air Pollution (HTAP II). The observationally adjusted global N deposition budget is 114.5 Tg N, representing a minor increase of 1 % from the model-only derived values, and the adjusted global sulfur deposition budget is 88.9 Tg S, representing a 6.5 % increase from the modeled values, using an interpolation distance of 2.5∘. Regionally, deposition adjustments can be up to ∼ 73 % for nitrogen and 112 % for sulfur. Our study demonstrates that a global measurement–model fusion approach can improve N and S deposition model estimates at a regional scale, with sufficient availability of observations; however, in large parts of the world, alternative approaches need to be explored. The analysis presented here represents a step forward toward the World Meteorological Organization's goal of global fusion products for accurately mapping harmful air pollution deposition.

NMR study of Ni 50+x ⁢Ti 50-x strain glasses

Here, we studied Ni 50+x ⁢Ti 50-x with compositions up to x = 2, performing 47 Ti and 49 Ti nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements from 4 to 400 K. For large x in this system, a strain glass appears in which frozen ferroelastic nanodomains replace the displacive martensite structural transition. Here, we demonstrate that NMR can provide an extremely effective probe of the strain-glass freezing process, with large changes in NMR line shape due to the effects of random strains which become motionally narrowed at high temperatures. At the same time with high-resolution x-ray diffraction we confirm the lack of structural changes in x ≥ 1.2 samples, while we show that there is little change in the electronic behavior across the strain-glass freezing temperature. NMR spin-lattice relaxation time (T 1 ) measurements provide a further measure of the dynamics of the freezing process, and indicate a predominantly thermally activated behavior both above and below the strain-glass freezing temperature. We show that the strain-glass results are consistent with a very small density of critically divergent domains undergoing a Vogel-Fulcher-type freezing process, coexisting with domains exhibiting faster dynamics and stronger pinning.

Discovering strongly lensed quasar candidates with catalogue-based methods from DESI Legacy Surveys

The Hubble tension, revealed by a ~5σ discrepancy between measurements of the Hubble-Lemaitre constant among observations of the early and local Universe, is one of the most significant problems in modern cosmology. In order to better understand the origin of this mismatch, independent techniques to measure H 0 , such as strong lensing time delays, are required. Notably, the sample size of such systems is key to minimising the statistical uncertainties and cosmic variance, which can be improved by exploring the datasets of large-scale sky surveys such as Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI). We identify possible strong lensing time-delay systems within DESI by selecting candidate multiply imaged lensed quasars from a catalogue of 24 440 816 candidate QSOs contained in the ninth data release of the DESI Legacy Imaging Surveys (DESI-LS). Using a friend-of-friends-like algorithm on spatial co-ordinates, our method generates an initial list of compact quasar groups. This list is subsequently filtered using a measure of the similarity of colours among a group’s members and the likelihood that they are quasars. A visual inspection finally selects candidate strong lensing systems based on the spatial configuration of the group members. We identified 620 new candidate multiply imaged lensed quasars (101 grade-A, 214 grade-B, 305 grade-C). This number excludes 53 known spectroscopically confirmed systems and existing candidate systems identified in other similar catalogues. When available, these new candidates will be further checked by combining the spectroscopic and photometric data from DESI.

Non‐OH‐driven liquid‐phase chemistry in water microdroplets

Abstract Water microdroplets containing organic and fluorinated compounds, such as formate, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and triflic acid, were exposed to a radiofrequency glow discharge plasma with a droplet residence time on the order of milliseconds. Triflic acid remained unaffected by any plasma condition while >75% decomposition of formate and PFOA could be achieved. In situ hydroxyl (OH)‐laser‐induced fluorescence measurements near the droplets confirmed that the conversion was independent of the OH flux to the droplet. A series of control experiments suggest that the contribution of vacuum UV photons in such decomposition of aqueous compounds can be significant for He and He + 17% Ar plasmas and can also explain unexpected decomposition trends as a function of droplet residence time in the plasma.

A Polymer Canvas with the Stiffness of the Bone Matrix to Study and Control Mesenchymal Stem Cell Response

Reproducing in vitro the complex multiscale physical features of human tissues creates novel biomedical opportunities and fundamental understanding of cell–environment interfaces and interactions. While stiffness has been recognized as a key driver of cell behavior, systematic studies on the role of stiffness have been limited to values in the KPa–MPa range, significantly below the stiffness of bone. Here, in this work, a platform enabling the tuning of the stiffness of a biocompatible polymeric interface up to values characteristic of human bone is reported, which are in the GPa range, by using extremely thin polymer films on glass and cross-linking the films using ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation. It is shown that a higher stiffness is related to better adhesion, proliferation, and osteogenic differentiation, and that it is possible to switch on/off cell attachment and growth by solely tuning the stiffness of the interface, without any surface chemistry or topography modification. Since the stiffness is tuned directly by UV irradiation, this platform is ideal for rapid and simple fabrication of stiffness patterns and gradients, thus representing an innovative tool for combinatorial studies of the synergistic effect of tissue environmental cues on cell behavior, and creates new opportunities for next-generation biosensors, single-cell patterning, and lab-on-a-chip devices.

Stabilizing Metallic Na Anodes via Sodiophilicity Regulation: A Review

This review focuses on the Na wetting challenges and relevant strategies regarding stabilizing sodium-metal anodes in sodium-metal batteries (SMBs). The Na anode is the essential component of three key energy storage systems, including molten SMBs (i.e., intermediate-temperature Na-S and ZEBRA batteries), all-solid-state SMBs, and conventional SMBs using liquid electrolytes. We begin with a general description of issues encountered by different SMB systems and point out the common challenge in Na wetting. We detail the emerging strategies of improving Na wettability and stabilizing Na metal anodes for the three types of batteries, with the emphasis on discussing various types of tactics developed for SMBs using liquid electrolytes. We conclude with a discussion of the overlooked yet critical aspects (Na metal utilization, N/P ratio, critical current density, etc.) in the existing strategies for an individual battery system and propose promising areas (anolyte incorporation and catholyte modifications for lower-temperature molten SMBs, cell evaluation under practically relevant current density and areal capacity, etc.) that we believe to be the most urgent for further pursuit. Comprehensive investigations combining complementary post-mortem, in situ, and operando analyses to elucidate cell-level structure-performance relations are advocated.

Leveraging SETS resilience capabilities for safe-to-fail infrastructure under climate change

As the rehabilitation of infrastructure is outpaced by changes in the profile, frequency, and intensity of extreme weather events, infrastructure’s service disruptions and failures become increasingly likely. Safe-to-fail approaches for infrastructure planning and design improve the capacity of cities to adapt for uncertain climate futures by identifying social, ecological, and technological systems (SETS) capabilities to prepare for potential failure scenarios. In this work, we argue for transforming infrastructure planning and design to effectively utilize safe-to-fail approaches by navigating the opportunities and trade-offs of SETS resilience capabilities. From a technological vantage point, traditional infrastructure planning approaches account for social and ecological domains as external design conditions rather than embedded system characteristics. Safe-to-fail approaches directly challenge the isolation of the technological domain by necessitating a recognition that SETS domains are interconnected and interdependent in infrastructure systems, as such risks and system capabilities for resilience must be managed cohesively.

ANALYSIS OF MULTIBUNCH SPECTRUM FOR AN UNEVEN BUNCH DISTRIBUTION IN A STORAGE RING

Modern storage-ring designs often require an uneven bunch distribution pattern. An uneven bunch fill pattern can result in complex structures for the beam current spectra. Particularly at high average beam currents, these complex current spectra need to be taken into account in concern of beam-dynamical effects. In this study, we analyze a beam current spectrum for various filling patterns with bunch trains and gaps. The characteristics of the resulting beam current spectra are illustrated and discussed.

Convection-permitting hindcasting of diurnal variation of Mei-yu rainfall over East China with a global variable-resolution model

Two sets of 48-hr hindcast experiments for Mei-yu season using non-hydrostatic global variable-resolution model (MPAS-Atmosphere) with regional refinement at 4km resolution (V4km) and uniform 60km resolution (U60km) are first-time conducted to attempt at simulating the Mei-yu rainfall in 2015 over East China. The analysis focuses on the seasonal average of diurnal variation of precipitation amount (PA), intensity (PI), and frequency (PF). Both simulations reasonably reproduce the spatial distribution of PA. V4km is more skillful in simulating the spatial distributions and magnitudes of PF and PI. The diurnal cycle of Mei-yu rainfall shows a major early morning peak and a minor afternoon peak, contributed by precipitation during two sub-periods with distinct synoptic circulations. With strong Mei-yu in the first sub-period, the diurnal variation of PA is controlled by nocturnal southwesterly jet. V4km overestimates the morning peak mainly due to its bias in simulating boundary layer inertial oscillation. Although differences in PA between the simulations are small, U60km overestimates PF and underestimates PI. With weak Mei-yu in the second sub-period, the diurnal variation of PA is controlled by both synoptic circulation and local convection. At both resolutions, deviations in the large-scale circulation modulated by a few typhoons lead to positive biases in the morning peak of PA. After removing the typhoon impacts, V4km captures the observed diurnal cycle of PA well, while U60km significantly underestimates PA and PI particularly in the afternoon. Future studies focusing on advancing modeling of southwesterly jet and typhoons may further improve convection permitting simulation of Mei-yu rainfall.

Geometrical defect detection for additive manufacturing with machine learning models

This study proposed a scheme based on Machine Learning (ML) models to detect geometric defects of additively manufactured objects. The ML models are trained with synthetic 3D point clouds with defects and then applied to detect defects in actual production. Using synthetic 3D point clouds rather than experimental data could save a huge amount of training time and costs associated with many prints for each design. Besides distance differences of individual points between source and target point clouds, this scheme uses a new concept called “patch” to capture macro-level information about nearby points for ML training and implementation. Numerical comparisons of prediction results on experimental data with different shapes showed that the proposed scheme outperformed the existing Z-difference method in the literature. Five ML methods (Bagging of Trees, Gradient Boosting, Random Forest, K-nearest Neighbors and Linear Supported Vector Machine) were compared under various conditions, such as different point cloud densities and defect sizes. Bagging and Random Forest were found the two best models regarding predictability; and the right patch size was found to be at 20. The proposed ML-based scheme is applicable to in-situ defect detection during additive manufacturing with the aid of a proper 3D data acquisition system.

Efficient Removal of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances from Water with Zirconium-Based Metal–Organic Frameworks

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are an emerging class of contaminants raising increased levels of concern due to their toxic, bioaccumulative, and persistent nature. Current solutions for removing PFAS from contaminated water rely on adsorption-based methods where commonly used sorbents, for example, activated carbons and ion-exchange resins, exhibit low adsorption capacity and a long equilibration time. Motivated by the generally deficient performance of these current materials, this work addresses the need for the discovery of advanced sorbents for high capacity and efficient PFAS removal. The zirconium-based metal–organic framework (MOF) NU-1000 was characterized for the adsorption of three perfluorosulfonic acids (PFSAs, C4–C8) and six perfluorinated carboxylic acids (PFCAs, C1–C9) from aqueous solutions. Here, the results indicate that NU-1000 exhibits outstanding adsorption capacities of 400–620 mg/g for PFSAs and 201–604 mg/g for PFCAs coupled with ultrafast adsorption kinetics featuring equilibrium times of <1 min. Complementary density functional theory calculations reveal that the PFAS@MOF adsorption mechanism is dominated by a combination of hydrogen bonding, electrostatic, and hydrophobic non-covalent PFAS–MOF interactions. Excellent regeneration and reusability characteristics were found, particularly nearly quantitative removal and recovery rates of NU-1000 after five consecutive adsoption and desorption cycles of PFAS. Additional adsorption testing using PFAS-contaminated groundwater samples obtained from U.S. Air Force bases revealed impressive PFAS removal rates of 75–98% within 10 min regardless of the presence of co-contaminants. To the best of our knowledge, the suite of herein presented PFAS sorption characteristics—capacity, kinetics, regeneration, and reusability—significantly outperforms other current sorbents, rendering NU-1000 as a promising platform for the rapid and effective removal of PFAS from aqueous media.
