Elementary excitations of single-photon emitters in hexagonal boron nitride

Single-photon emitters serve as building blocks for many emerging concepts in quantum photonics. The recent identification of bright, tunable and stable emitters in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) has opened the door to quantum platforms operating across the infrared to ultraviolet spectrum. Although it is widely acknowledged that defects are responsible for single-photon emitters in hBN, crucial details regarding their origin, electronic levels and orbital involvement remain unknown. Here we employ a combination of resonant inelastic X-ray scattering and photoluminescence spectroscopy in defective hBN, unveiling an elementary excitation at 285 meV that gives rise to a plethora of harmonics correlated with single-photon emitters. We discuss the importance of N π* anti-bonding orbitals in shaping the electronic states of the emitters. Importantly, the discovery of elementary excitations in hBN provides fundamental insights into quantum emission in low-dimensional materials, paving the way for future investigations in other platforms.

Universal Stripe Symmetry of Short-Range Charge Density Waves in Cuprate Superconductors

The omnipresence of charge density waves (CDWs) across almost all cuprate families underpins a common organizing principle. However, a longstanding debate of whether its spatial symmetry is stripe or checkerboard remains unresolved. While CDWs in lanthanum- and yttrium-based cuprates possess a stripe symmetry, distinguishing these two scenarios is challenging for the short-range CDW in bismuth-based cuprates. Here, high-resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering is employed to uncover the spatial symmetry of the CDW in Bi 2 Sr 2-x La x CuO 6 + δ . Across a wide range of doping and temperature, anisotropic CDW peaks with elliptical shapes are found in reciprocal space. Based on Fourier transform analysis of real-space models, the results are interpreted as evidence of unidirectional charge stripes, hosted by mutually 90°-rotated anisotropic domains. This work paves the way for a unified symmetry and microscopic description of CDW order in cuprates.

Low-energy quasi-circular electron correlations with charge order wavelength in Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+δ

Most resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) studies of dynamic charge order correlations in the cuprates have focused on the high-symmetry directions of the copper oxide plane. However, scattering along other in-plane directions should not be ignored as it may help understand, for example, the origin of charge order correlations or the isotropic scattering resulting in strange metal behavior. Our RIXS experiments reveal dynamic charge correlations over the qx-qy scattering plane in underdoped Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+δ . Tracking the softening of the RIXS-measured bond-stretching phonon, we show that these dynamic correlations exist at energies below approximately 70 meV and are centered around a quasi-circular manifold in the q x -q y scattering plane with radius equal to the magnitude of the charge order wave vector, q CO . This phonon-tracking procedure also allows us to rule out fluctuations of short-range directional charge order (i.e., centered around [q x = ±q CO , q y = 0] and [q x = 0, q y = ±q CO ]) as the origin of the observed correlations.

Charge sharing in pixelated semiconductor sensors

The charge sharing between neighboring pixels in pixelated sensors can be used to measure particle or x-ray coordinates with accuracy better than the pixel pitch. The accurate model of the charge distribution shape is essential to achieve ultimate coordinate accuracy. The charge sharing is caused by charge carriers' diffusion on the path from the generation point to pixels. This paper is focused on the diffusion of the initially compact charge cloud in the field free region. The diffusion equation solutions are obtained using separation of variable and Fourier synthesis method for different initial conditions and resulting charge distributions are integrated over pixel areas. In conclusion, the look up table containing pre-calculated values for pixel charge fractions is proposed to speed up numerical calculations.

Unraveling higher-order contributions to spin excitations probed using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering

Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) is an evolving tool for investigating the spin dynamics of strongly correlated materials, which complements inelastic neutron scattering. In isotropic spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg antiferromagnetic (HAFM) spin chains, both techniques have observed non-spin-conserving (NSC) excitations confined to the two-spinon phase space. However, a recent O K-edge RIXS study of the one-dimensional HAFM Sr 2 CuO 3 observed spin-conserving (SC) four-spinon excitations outside the two-spinon phase space. Here, we demonstrate that analogous four-spinon excitations can also be accessed at the Cu L 3 edge in the related material SrCuO 2 . Through detailed modeling, we establish that these excitations appear in both the SC and NSC channels of the Cu L 3 edge, and are only captured by higher-order terms in the ultrashort core-hole lifetime expansion. Finally, since these terms encode information about spin-spin correlations extending beyond nearest neighbors, our results offer different possibilities for studying nonlocal spin correlations in quantum magnets.
