Experimental and Computational Study of Convective Heating on the Aeroshell Back Side and Payload of the LOFTID Vehicle

A wind tunnel test program was conducted to obtain experimental convective heating data on models of the Low Earth Orbital Flight Test of an Inflatable Decelerator (LOFTID) vehicle in support of the flight test program. Wind tunnel testing was conducted at Mach 6 and Mach 10 at unit Reynolds numbers from 0.5×106/ft to 4.0×106/ft on 6.0inch diameter aeroshell models. Global heating data were obtained through phosphor thermography measurements on the front and back of the aeroshell and on the payload. For all test conditions, attached, laminar flow was definitively produced on the front of the aeroshell, while in the wake the flow was separated, unsteady and possibly transitional or turbulent. A complementary computational study was performed to assess the accuracy of heating predictions for LOFTID wake flow environments. A new grid topology was developed for the study to allow the use of structured grid solvers for complex, open-backed geometries such as that of LOFTID. Close agreement between measurements and predictions was obtained on the front of the aeroshell. Comparisons were more challenging in the wake because of both the extremely low heating rates and the accompanying high uncertainties and the unsteady nature of the separated wake flow simulations. While the differences between heating predictions and measurements for the wake flow were higher than for the forebody flow, these differences were used to assist in the definition of conservative uncertainty margins for predictions of the flight environments for the successful flight test of the LOFTID vehicle in November 2022.

LAURA Users Manual: 5.7

This users manual provides in-depth information concerning installation and execution of Laura, version 5. Laura is a structured, multi-block, compu- tational aerothermodynamic simulation code. Version 5 represents a major refactoring of the original Fortran 77 Laura code toward a modular structure afforded by Fortran 2003. The refactoring improved usability and maintain- ability by eliminating the requirement for problem-dependent re-compilations, providing more intuitive distribution of functionality, and simplifying inter- faces required for multi-physics coupling. As a result, Laura now shares gas-physics modules, MPI modules, and other low-level modules with the Fun3D unstructured-grid code. In addition to internal refactoring, several new features and capabilities have been added, e.g., a GNU-standard instal- lation process, parallel load balancing, automatic trajectory point sequencing, free-energy minimization, and coupled ablation and flowfield radiation.

This manual describes the installation and execution of FUN3D version 14.1, including optional dependent packages. FUN3D is a suite of computational fluid dynamics simulation and design tools that uses mixed-element unstructured grids in a large number of formats, including structured multiblock and overset grid systems. A discretely-exact adjoint solver may be used for formal design optimization, error estimation, and mesh adaptation. FUN3D also offers a reacting, real-gas capability and provides GPU acceleration of many common simulation options.

LAURA Users Manual: 5.6

This users manual provides in-depth information concerning installation and execution of Laura, version 5. Laura is a structured, multiblock, computational aerothermodynamic simulation code. Version 5 represents a major refactoring of the original Fortran 77 Laura code toward a modular structure afforded by Fortran 95. The refactoring improved usability and maintainability by eliminating the requirement for problem-dependent recompilations, providing more intuitive distribution of functionality, and simplifying inter- faces required for multi-physics coupling. As a result, Laura now shares gas-physics modules, MPI modules, and other low-level modules with the Fun3D unstructured-grid code. FUN3D Manual: 13.6

This manual describes the installation and execution of FUN3D version 13.6, including optional dependent packages. FUN3D is a suite of computational fluid dynamics simulation and design tools that uses mixed-element unstructured grids in a large number of formats, including structured multiblock and overset grid systems. A discretely-exact adjoint solver enables efficient gradient-based design and grid adaptation to reduce estimated discretization error. FUN3D is available with and without a reacting, real-gas capability. This generic gas option is available only for those persons that qualify for its beta release status.

Aerothermodynamic CFD Analysis

This presentation provides an introduction to two Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) codes, LAURA and FUN3D, which have been developed and widely used at NASA Langley Research Center in Entry, Descent, and Landing applications. A workflow using the LAURA and FUN3D CFD codes to predict aerodynamic and aerothermodynamic engineering quantities is presented. The presentation will cover the basics of setting up and running simulations using both CFD codes, as well as how to post-process results obtained from each code. More advanced topics will also be presented, including a state-of-the-art uncertainty quantification approach to be included in the next LAURA release, and a new geometry-based workflow used with FUN3D focused on replacing user-defined meshing with an adaptation-based approach.

Towards an Automated Unstructured Grid Adaptation Workflow with VULCAN

Early work is presented for an unstructured grid adaptation workflow with VULCAN and refine. Anisotropic simplex grids are iteratively adapted to match a Riemannian metric tensor field describing desired mesh spacing. The Riemannian metric tensor field is obtained from Hessians of CFD solution output scalar sensor fields; both Mach number and static temperature sensor fields are explored. In addition, we describe a Newton-method-based solver recently implemented in VULCAN utilizing Jacobian-Free-Newton-Krylov that can be used to increase flow solver automation on early grids in the adadptation process. Hypersonic flow solutions are presented on a high Reynolds number flat plate and wall heat flux is compared against a highly resolved structured solution. Additionally, complex shock boundary-layer interaction is explored in a high Mach number compression corner and complex 3D flow phenomena are evaluated on the Boundary Layer Transition (BOLT) vehicle.

Economical Third-Order Methods for Accurate Surface Heating Predictions on Simplex Element Meshes

A node-centered edge-based finite volume discretization of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations is presented with the heat flux reformulated as a first order system. A dissipation vector is derived for the reformulated system, such that the heat flux can be upgraded to O(h^3) on simplex element meshes in the same fashion as the inviscid fluxes. The method of manufactured solutions is used to demonstrate this uniform order property in heat flux. This new system is shown to efficiently produce accurate surface heating predictions on hypersonic hemisphere flow using an anisotropic simplex element mesh, achieving O(h^3) accuracy at relatively low computational cost compared to similar methods.

Improvements to the LAURA Mesh Adaptation Algorithm

This paper describes recent improvements to the LAURA code that removes the requirementof unbroken body-normal lines when using the automated mesh adaptation algorithm inLAURA responsible for mesh alignment with shock and adjusting near-wall mesh spacing. Fornon-simple geometry, restricting block topologies such that blocks span the domain from thesurface wall boundaries to domain inflow boundary can be difficult or impossible. Removing thisrequirement enables novel block topologies that simplify the meshing workflow for LAURA users. The new adaptation algorithm implementation in LAURA is described and several examples ofthe adaptation are presented to demonstrate the efficacy of the adaptation algorithm.
