Continuous and discrete describing function analysis of the LST system

A describing function of the control moment gyros (CMG) frictional nonlinearity is derived using the analytic torque equation. Computer simulation of the simplified Large Space Telescope (LST) system with the analytic torque expression is discussed along with the transfer functions of the sampled-data LST system, and the discrete describing function of the GMC frictionality.

Digital approximation of continuous-data control systems by point-by-point state comparison

This paper presents a point-by-point state comparison method of approximating a continuous-data system by a sampled-data system. The problem is to attempt the matching of the states of the two systems at the sampling instants. A partial matching has to be conducted if the systems have more states than controls. A weighting matrix is used to regulate the partial matching and weights placed on each state. The digital approximation is affected by use of forward gain E(T) and feedback gain G(T) in the sampled-data system. It is shown that, in general, these gains can be approximated by truncated Taylor series expansions. An illustrative example is given using the one-axis dynamics of the Skylab satellite.

Design of a digital controller for spinning flexible spacecraft.

A new approach to digital control system design is applied to the analysis and design of a practical onboard digital attitude control system for a class of spinning vehicles characterized by a rigid body and two connected flexible appendages. The approach used is to design a continuous-data control system that will provide a satisfactory system response. Then, using the digital redesign method, a digital controller with onboard digital computer is designed to provide a digital control system whose states are similar to those of the continuous system at sampling instants. The simplicity of application of this approach is indicated by an example in which spinning Skylab parameters are used to substantiate the conclusions.

Research study on stabilization and control: Modern sampled data control theory

A numerical analysis of spacecraft stability parameters was conducted. The analysis is based on a digital approximation by point by point state comparison. The technique used is that of approximating a continuous data system by a sampled data model by comparison of the states of the two systems. Application of the method to the digital redesign of the simplified one axis dynamics of the Skylab is presented.
