Narrow far fields from extended-window broad-area lasers

Broad-area lasers are fabricated with a long (80-100 microns), nonabsorbing window at each end. The window is shown to dramatically improve the spatial mode properties, stabilizing and smoothing the near field, and reducing the far field from 5-15 deg to as low as 2 deg. This improvement comes at the expense of an increase in threshold current and a reduction of quantum efficiency.

Al(0.3)Ga(0.7)As / Al(0.05)Ga(0.95)As light-emitting diodes on GaAs-coated Si substrates grown by liquid phase epitaxy

Al(0.3)Ga(0.7)As/Al(0.05)Ga(0.95)As double-heterostructure light-emitting diodes (LEDs) were successfully grown for the first time by liquid phase epitaxy on a GaAs-coated Si substrate that was prepared by a sequential process of migration-enhanced epitaxy and molecular beam epitaxy. The edge-emitting LEDs had diode ideality factors of 1.54 at a forward-biased voltage higher than 0.9 V and external quantum efficiencies of 0.0033 W/A per facet. This efficiency is 50 times higher than the previously reported value, and is on the same order as that of AlGaAs homojunction LEDs fabricated on the GaAs substrates by liquid phase epitaxy.

Diffraction-Coupled, Phase-Locked Semiconductor Laser Array

Stable, narrow far field produced. Array of lasers fabricated on single chip. Individual laser waveguides isolated from each other except in end portions, where diffraction coupling takes place. Radiation pattern far from laser array has single, sharp central lobe when all lasers operate in phase with each other. Shape of lobe does not vary appreciably with array current. Applications include recording, printing, and range finding.

Phase-Locked Semiconductor Lasers With Separate Contacts

Individual current feeds enable better uniformity and flexible control. Separate contacts for lasers in array enable control of output radiation pattern and compensation of manufacturing nonuniformities among lasers. Concept of separate current control described for two-laser array in "Semiconductor Laser Phased Array" (NPO-15963).

Monolithic electro-optic modulator array

A PIN GaAlAs diode structure is provided with parameters for index guiding of light in a single mode. The index of refraction of the central layer I (which in practice may be lightly doped .pi. or .nu.) is greater than the p- and n-layers to create a slab waveguide in the transverse direction. Stripe contacts define separate waveguide channels that are separated electrically and optically by implanting protons or etching grooves between the stripe contacts in the upper layer. Separate reverse biasing voltages may be applied to the stripe contacts for modulation of the light in proportions to the voltage, either with absorption modulation, if the light wavelength is within about 500.ANG. of the bandgap of the .pi.-material, or phase-delay modulation, if the wavelength is separated from the bandgap of the .pi.-material by at least 900.ANG..

Diode-Laser Array Suppresses Extraneous Modes

Diode parameters varied to shape output beam. Array of phase-locked GaAs/GaAIAs diode lasers produces light beam with one main radiation lobe. Physical parameters of laser diodes differ from each other in way that favors oscillation in fundamental supermode, suppressing oscillation in higher-order modes.

Numerical simulation of aircraft rotary aerodynamics

A potential-flow based panel method was used to compute the aerodynamic loads along a three-dimensional flight path. Comparisons were made with rotary rig tests of an airplane performing a coning motion and found to compare well with the main components of the aerodynamic forces. The effect of the sting-type wind tunnel mounting of the model on the measured loads was briefly investigated, and the possible benefits of using this method combined with wind tunnel experiments were highlighted.

Semiconductor lasers for space sensor applications

Despite their intrinsic power limitations, semiconductor laser diodes are essential for laser-based spaceborne sensor systems covering a wide spectral range, fulfilling such roles as pumping and injection-locking. They may also be used as direct sources in shorter-range operations. AlGaAs laser arrays have been developed for 810-nm band pumping in Nd:YAG lasers otherwise emitting at 1.064 nm. Additional roles include their use as low-power injection seeds, locking a solid-state laser into a specific desired wavelength.

Effect of vertical ejector-jet on the vortex-lift of delta wings

The effect of adding an ejector jet to a 76-deg delta wing was investigated experimentally and theoretically in terms of the resulting longitudinal aerodynamic characteristics. A small-scale wind-tunnel experiment served for the investigation and a simplified vortex lattice model was constructed to simulate the first order effects of this complex flow field. The major benefits of this combined approach over the use of more developed computer schemes lies in the relative ease in tailoring the mathematical model to a new problem. Results of both the wind-tunnel experiment and the theoretical model showed measurable lift loss due to the ejector jet throughout the whole angle-of-attack range, which will intensify at lower flight speeds.

Semiconductor laser technology for remote sensing experiments

Semiconductor injection lasers are required for implementing virtually all spaceborne remote sensing systems. Their main advantages are high reliability and efficiency, and their main roles are envisioned in pumping and injection locking of solid state lasers. In some shorter range applications they may even be utilized directly as the sources.

Diffractively Coupled, Refractively Guided Lasers

Semiconductor-laser arrays more reliable, more powerful, and easier to make. Improved design intended to eliminate undesired electromagnetic modes and mode shifts sometimes occuring in gain-guided variety. Reflected from mirror/window at end of common resonator section of laser, energy refracted from each laser enters adjacent laser. Mutual coupling establishes phase relationships among lasers. Monolithic laser array made by standard epitaxial techniques. Made in part with polymeric materials to mitigate some deleterious effects of all-expitaxial processing. Potential applications include optical communications, ranging, printing, and recording.

Tunable Dual Semiconductor Laser

Parallel lasers interact in shared space to alter output wavelength. New device consists of two stripe lasers in aluminum gallium arsenide chip. Parallel stripes close enough so light from lower laser coupled into upper laser and vice versa. Lasers operated by low-duty-cycle current pulses. Lasing threshold of each about 100 mA. Currents controlled independently. Useful in optical communications systems employing wavelength-division multiplexing.

Approximate Analysis of Semiconductor Laser Arrays

Simplified equation yields useful information on gains and output patterns. Theoretical method based on approximate waveguide equation enables prediction of lateral modes of gain-guided planar array of parallel semiconductor lasers. Equation for entire array solved directly using piecewise approximation of index of refraction by simple functions without customary approximation based on coupled waveguid modes of individual lasers. Improved results yield better understanding of laser-array modes and help in development of well-behaved high-power semiconductor laser arrays.

Propeller swirl effect on single-engine general-aviation aircraft stall-spin tendencies

An investigation is conducted of the effect of a single engine, untapered low wing general aviation aircraft propeller's swirl on the craft's stall pattern. The asymmetrical character of the propeller's swirl can trigger an early stall of one of the wings, aggravating the spin-entry condition. It is shown that the combination of this propeller-induced effect with adverse sideslip can result in large and abrupt changes in the rolling moment, in such conditions as uncoordinated low speed turning maneuvers where the pilot yaws the aircraft with wings level, rather than rolling it.

Phase-locked arrays of semiconductor injection lasers - A review

Arrays of phase-locked semiconductor injection lasers integrated monolithically on the same substrate are one potential method for obtaining higher power levels (in controlled mode operation) than those available from a single laser. This paper describes basic methods for analyzing the electrical and optical characteristics of these devices, and discusses problems associated with maintaining a stable operation in a single array mode ('supermode'). Various experimental results are presented and compared with theory.

Simple method for designing or analyzing an optical communication link

A simple method is described for determining the performance of a free space optical communication link. The method can be used either in the system design (synthesis) mode, or in the performance evaluation (analysis) mode. Although restricted to photo counting based detection (e.g., photomultiplier tube or equivalent) of pulse position modulated signals, the method is still sufficiently general to accommodate space-based, as well as ground-based, reception.

Cooling Air Inlet and Exit Geometries on Aircraft Engine Installations

A semispan wing and nacelle of a typical general aviation twin-engine aircraft was tested to evaluate the cooling capability and drag or several nacelle shapes; the nacelle shapes included cooling air inlet and exit variations. The tests were conducted in the Ames Research Center 40 x 80-ft Wind Tunnel. It was found that the cooling air inlet geometry of opposed piston engine installations has a major effect on inlet pressure recovery, but only a minor effect on drag. Exit location showed large effect on drag, especially for those locations on the sides of the nacelle where the suction characteristics were based on interaction with the wing surface pressures.
