Approximations for proton excitation of coronal ion fine structure

Explicit approximations that yield proton excitation cross sections and rate coefficients for fine-structure transitions in a wide variety of ions over the low and intermediate energy ranges are obtained in terms of the electric quadrupole transition probability and quadrupole radial integral of a given ion. The range of applicability of these approximations is discussed, and comparisons are made with available cross sections and rate coefficients. Values of quadrupole radial integrals are given for ground configurations of even-Z elements in higher stages of ionization. Proton excitation rate coefficients are computed for coronal transitions involving fine-structure levels in the ions Fe XIII, Fe XV, Fe XVIII, Fe XXI, and Ca XIII.

Limb-brightening observations from the OSO-7 satellite. II - Comparison of Abel-inverted intensities of Fe XIV and Fe XIII EUV emission lines with predictions

Intensities of Fe XIV and Fe XIII EUV emission lines obtained at coronal locations beyond the limb by the Goddard spectroheliograph on the OSO 7 satellite have been corrected for the wavelength dependence of the instrument's sensitivity and have been Abel-inverted to provide a valid comparison with theoretical predictions for each ion. Details of the Abel-inversion procedure are given, including explicit formulas for application of Bracewell's (1956) method. The intensity ratios of pairs of lines originating from a common level are compared with expected theoretical transition probability ratios over a range of heliocentric distance; deviations in some cases yield information about adjacent unclassified lines. Comparison of the observations with predictions for Fe XIV and Fe XIII shows generally good agreement, with a few interesting discrepancies that may imply a corresponding need for more accurate collisional excitation cross sections. The same comparison yields the variation of electron density with heliocentric radius for each ion separately; the two density functions are found to agree within a factor of three.

Calculation of the twilight visibility function of near-sun objects

The visibility function, defined here as the magnitude difference between the excess brightness of a given object and that of the background sky, of near-sun objects during twilight is obtained from a general calculation which considers the twilight sky background, atmospheric extinction, and night glow. Visibility curves are computed for a number of cases in which observations have been recorded, particularly that of comet Kohoutek. For this object, the computed visibility maxima agree well in time with the reported times of observation.

Forbidden transition probabilities for ground terms of ions with p or p5 configurations

Forbidden transition probabilities are given for ground term transitions of ions in the isoelectronic sequences with outer configurations 2s2 2p (B I), 2p5 (F I), 3s2 3p (Al I), and 3p5 (Cl I). Tables give, for each ion, the ground term interval, the associated wavelength, the quadrupole radial integral, the electric quadrupole transition probability, and the magnetic dipole transition probability. Coronal lines due to some of these ions have been observed, while others are yet to be observed. The tales for the Al I and Cl I sequences include elements up to germanium.

Observation of subordinate 2p/5/4d-2p/5/3p transitions in neon-like ions from Ca XI to Ni XIX

Subordinate 2p(5)4d-2p(5)3p transitions in the neon-like ions from Ca XI through Ni XIX are identified. Such transitions between excited levels have not previously been reported for ionization stages higher than Al IV, although the resonance lines are known through Zn XXI in the neon isoelectronic sequence. Measurement of the solar flux in such transitions may aid in establishing the relative importance of the several cascade processes giving rise to the observed Fe XVII resonance lines.

Monte Carlo treatment of Lyman-alpha. II - Radiation in a spherical atmosphere

Intensity and state of polarization of solar L-alpha photons as they diffuse through an inhomogeneous, spherically symmetric, isothermal geocorona are theoretically determined. The fine structure of L-alpha and Doppler redistribution of frequencies are taken into account. The calculation use the Monte Carlo technique involving Stokes vectors. Comparison of the results with OGO-4 and OSO-4 observed intensities at an altitude of 650 km shows good agreement. Calculations of the polarization versus solar zenith angle show a residual polarization at large zenith angles which is mainly due to multiply scattered photons.

Observation of possible Fe XVII 2p5 3p/1S0/ - 2p5 3s/1P1, 3P1/ transitions in spectra of a solar active region and flare

Expected wavelengths and relative intensities are obtained from previous calculations for the hitherto unobserved transitions 2p5 3p(1SO) - 2p5 3s(1P1, 3P1) in Fe XVII. A candidate pair of lines at 197.05 A and 242.09 A was found in laboratory spectra and appears to be present in the spectra of a solar active region observed by the OSO-7 Goddard spectroheliograph as well as in the spectrum of a Skylab-observed solar flare.

Solar-flare emission lines in the range from 66 to 171 A; 2sr 2pk - 2s/r-1/ 2p/k+1/ transitions in highly ionized iron

New emission lines found in several flare spectra obtained with the Goddard grating spectrometer on the OSO-5 satellite, in 1969, have been listed by wavelength and relative intensity. These new lines, including several as strong as normal quiet-sun lines, are extremely variable in intensity and have been assigned mainly to transitions of the type 2sr 2pk - 2s(r-1) 2p(k+1) in iron ions up to Fe XXIII.

Prediction and identification of some forbidden lines in the Ne I sequence

A magnetic quadrupole transition which according to a prediction by Garstang (1969) is to have an appreciable transition probability in the higher ions of the Ne I sequence has recently been observed in Fe XVII with high resolution by Parkinson (1973), at 17.086 A. Values of an interval predicted by calculations of Crance (1973) are plotted in a graph. Interval values obtained from the curve are used to predict the values of certain transition wavelengths in the ions Si V Cr XV.

On helium-like 1s2l-1snl prime transitions in solar flare spectra

Expected wavelengths and intensities are computed for 1s2l-1snl prime transitions in helium-like ions of the abundant elements from oxygen to iron under coronal conditions. Probable observations of some of these lines in the spectra of solar flares are discussed, and attention is called to a possible reversal of singlet and triplet intensities as compared to laboratory observations.

Dipole and quadrupole integrals for the C I, N I, and O I sequences

The Coulomb approximation tables of Oertel and Shomo, together with binding-energy values obtained by a screening approximation, have been used to produce values of the dipole and quadrupole radial integrals needed in obtaining transition probabilities for ions of six, seven, and eight electrons. Some comparisons with more rigorously calculated values show that the present values are quite accurate, especially for ions of higher atomic number.

Solar flare line emission between 6 A and 25 A

A list of emission lines in the spectra of solar flares between 6 and 25 A has been compiled using data obtained with a KAP crystal spectrometer on the OSO-5 satellite. The emission lines have been classified according to their sensitivity to flare activity. This classification provides a method for discriminating between iron in high stages of ionization (Fe XX-Fe XXV) and lower stages (Fe XVII-Fe XIX), the lines of which are both present in the same spectral region during flares. Identifications consistent with these classifications are proposed. Anomalous intensities in the spectra of Fe XVII and Fe XX are pointed out, and implications of the observations for models of the X-ray emitting regions are discussed.

Monte Carlo treatment of Lyman-alpha radiation in a plane-parallel atmosphere.

A Monte Carlo technique involving Stokes vectors is used to obtain the state of polarization and intensity of solar Lyman-alpha photons as they diffuse through a plane-parallel homogeneous model of earth's hydrogen envelope. Fine structure of Lyman-alpha and Doppler redistribution of frequencies are taken into account. Comparison of the results with Heath's observed upper limit for polarization of 1.5 per cent implies an optical thickness tau greater than 7 and intensities of 8-10 kilorayleighs for a solar Lyman-alpha flux of 5.8 ergs per sq cm per sec.
