A new method for calculating time-dependent atomic level populations

A method is described for reducing the number of levels to be dealt with in calculating time-dependent populations of atoms or ions in plasmas. The procedure effectively extends the collisional-radiative model to consecutive stages of ionization, treating ground and metastable levels explicitly and excited levels implicitly. Direct comparisons of full and simulated systems are carried out for five-level models.

Bowen fluorescence on the sun

An identification is made of a weak line in the high-resolution EUV solar spectrum, and the contribution of the Bowen fluorescence mechanism to line emission is considered. The line at 303.625 A is noted to coincide with the 2p 3d(3P2 0) - 2p2(3P1) transition of O III at 303.621 A, which could be excited by He II line excitation of the O III 2p2(3P2) - 2p 3d(3P2 0) transition at 303.799 A. Computations of the collisionally induced intensities of the 2p2(3P) - 2p3d(3P 0) multiplet are shown to result in values not observed in the solar spectrum, indicating that Bowen fluorescence, rather than collisional excitation, is the source of the line. The Bowen fluorescence mechanism is noted to have implications for the identification of other spectral lines, and for models of the solar corona.

Wavelength predictions for lines of interest in the Ne I sequence

It is noted that the resonance lines of ions in the neon isoelectric sequence are prominent at short wavelengths. Recent observations and calculations in the literature are used to derive estimated wavelengths of likely observable lines emitted by neonlike ions. Optimal conditions for observation are briefly discussed, and estimated wavelengths for three transitions of the neon isoelectric sequence are presented.

Use of generalized population ratios to obtain Fe XV line intensities and linewidths at high electron densities

A generalized method for obtaining individual level population ratios is used to obtain relative intensities of extreme ultraviolet Fe XV emission lines in the range 284-500 A, which are density dependent for electron densities in the tokamak regime or higher. Four lines in particular are found to attain quite high intensities in the high-density limit. The same calculation provides inelastic contributions to linewidths. The method connects level populations and level widths through total probabilities t(ij), related to 'taboo' probabilities of Markov chain theory. The t(ij) are here evaluated for a real atomic system, being therefore of potential interest to random-walk theorists who have been limited to idealized systems characterized by simplified transition schemes.

Diffractoid grating configuration for X-ray and ultraviolet focusing

An aspheric grating is described which is operable to image local or distant point sources sharply in a designated wavelength, i.e., produce a perfectly stigmatic image in the given wavelength at grazing angles of incidence. The grating surface comprises a surface of revolution defined by a curve which does not have a constant radius of curvature but is defined by a nonlinear differential equation.

'Bottleneck' calculation of ion-electron recombination coefficients for lithium-like ions

The ion-electron recombination coefficients for the lithium-like ions C IV, O VI, Ne VIII, Si XII and Ar XVI are computed by the bottleneck method of Byron et al. (1962). In this method, the minimum rate of transitions down the ladder of energy level is taken as the limiting recombination rate, and the particular energy level corresponding to the minimum transition rate is found. The partial collisional radiative recombination coefficient is obtained in terms of the equilibrium population, the rate of collisional de-excitation, the mean radiative transition probability from the bottleneck level and the total transition probability from a level above the bottleneck level to all levels below it. The full collisional-radiative recombination is then obtained by the addition of the values of the radiative recombination coefficient and the three-body recombination coefficient to the ground level. Results of the calculation are shown to be in good agreement with those of Drawin and Emard (1975) for the case of hydrogen. It is also noted that the process of dielectronic recombination, which is not accounted for here, may be significant at lower densities.

The coronal spectra of Fe XV and Ni XVII

Predicted allowed and forbidden EUV line intensities of Fe XV and Ni XVII are presented in explicit graphical form, clarifying and extending the earlier treatment of Bely and Blaha (1968). In the case of the former ion a detailed comparison with available observations leads to questioning or rejection of some presently accepted line identifications (323.57 A, 317.61 A), and on the other hand suggests that a quiet sun line at 304.853 A is due to Fe XV. For the little known ion Ni XVII estimates of level structure and line wavelengths are given and a preliminary comparison is made with recent flare observations.

Polarizabilities of highly ionized atoms

An extrapolation method based on a screening approximation, applied to available initial values of polarizability for low stages of ionization, is used to obtain dipole and quadrupole polarizabilities for more highly ionized members of many isoelectronic sequences. It is suggested that the derived screening constants x sub L and limiting ratios F sub L may have significant physical meaning, especially the latter which may have an interpretation in terms of hydrogenic polarizabilities.

Ray-tracing the convex curved crystal X-ray spectrograph

The convex curved crystal X-ray spectrograph has recently seen increasing use for the spectral analysis of transient plasmas. The present paper describes the calculation of ray paths through the spectrograph for both localized and extended sources. The method traces a ray from any given source point to its point of diffraction by the curved crystal and then to the imaging circle, where the image point is obtained. Application of the ray tracing method is made to some actual experimental configurations to obtain resolution values and source sizes. Wavelength calibrations are obtainable with the ray tracing method in advance of instrument construction.

Approximations for proton excitation - Erratum and extension

Kastner (1977) proposed relatively simple approximations for proton excitation in coronal ions, which yield both excitation rate coefficients and excitation cross sections. An error in Kastner's expression for one of the partial excitation rate coefficients is corrected. The expression for excitation cross section is extended to higher energies, and the resulting expression for the other partial rate coefficient is given. Results obtained with the corrected and extended total excitation rate coefficient are presented for several representative transitions in Ca XIII, Ca XV, Fe X, Fe XIII, Fe XIV, Fe XVIII, and S X. The corrected and extended approximation is expected to yield excitation rates reliably within 50%.

Limb-brightening observations from the OSO-7 satellite. III - Comparison of EUV line intensities of Fe XII, Fe XI, Fe XV, Si X and S XII, Si IX and S XI with predictions

Continuing a study of heliocentric dependence of EUV emission line intensities observed by the Goddard OSO-7 spectroheliograph in 1972, the variation of lines of the ions Fe XII, Fe XI, Fe XV, Si X and S XII, Si IX and S XI is compared with the results of individual calculations for these ions, including theoretical intensities presented for Fe XII and Fe XI. Agreement is found to be good for Fe XII and reasonable for some of the lines of the other ions which in general are weaker in intensity. Several apparent anomalies are found however which may be due to unknown line components near the wavelengths observed.

Aspheric grating for extreme ultraviolet astronomy

A family of plane curves is developed which can diffract incident parallel rays to a point focus. These curves, termed diffractoidal curves, are rotated around an axis to produce surfaces of revolution correspondingly termed diffractoids, whose imaging properties for sources at infinity are studied by ray tracing in a few examples. The paraboloid emerges as a limiting case of the diffractoid. A comparison is made between the stigmatic focusing properties of the diffractoid and the toroidal grating.

On three-dimensional reconstruction of optically thin solar emission sources

Calculations are given for constructing the three dimensional distribution of optically thin EUV emission sources associated with solar active regions, from two dimensional observations (projections) recorded by the spectroheliograph on the OSO 7 satellite. The relation of the method to other image reconstruction methods is briefly discussed as well as the special requirements imposed in the solar case such as a knowledge of the true solar rotation function. A useful correlation criterion for establishing the physical validity of solutions is given.

Prediction and identification of some transitions associated with 2p/k/ and 2p/k-1/3l configurations in six-, seven- and eight-electron ions

Calculations of fine structure and transition probabilities, using the superstructure program developed at University College London, have been carried out for the 2p(k) and 2p(k-1)3l configurations of ions with six, seven, or eight electrons. The predicted line patterns are compared with existing observations for silicon, sulfur, argon, and calcium to yield some new identifications in laboratory and solar spectra and to indicate some transitions, as yet unobserved, that may be of observational importance.
