Integrated source and channel encoded digital communications system design study

Studies on the digital communication system for the direct communication links from ground to space shuttle and the links involving the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite (TDRS). Three main tasks were performed:(1) Channel encoding/decoding parameter optimization for forward and reverse TDRS links,(2)integration of command encoding/decoding and channel encoding/decoding; and (3) modulation coding interface study. The general communication environment is presented to provide the necessary background for the tasks and to provide an understanding of the implications of the results of the studies.

Coding/modulation trade-offs for Shuttle wideband data links

This paper describes various modulation and coding schemes which are potentially applicable to the Shuttle wideband data relay communications link. This link will be capable of accommodating up to 50 Mbps of scientific data and will be subject to a power constraint which forces the use of channel coding. Although convolutionally encoded coherent binary PSK is the tentative signal design choice for the wideband data relay link, FM techniques are of interest because of the associated hardware simplicity and because an FM system is already planned to be available for transmission of television via relay satellite to the ground. Binary and M-ary FSK are considered as candidate modulation techniques, and both coherent and noncoherent ground station detection schemes are examined. The potential use of convolutional coding is considered in conjunction with each of the candidate modulation techniques.

Space Shuttle communications - Wideband direct link signal and system design

This paper describes the design of a wideband S-band communications link from the Space Shuttle Orbiter to a ground-based terminal. This link will be used for transmission of television, digital data (various rates), or analog data, and is of interest because of the presence of bandwidth, power, and hardware constraints. The procedure followed to arrive at an overall signal and system design is outlined, and system performance margins are presented for various operational configurations. Finally, the growth potential of this link for digital data transmission is discussed.

A command encoding scheme for a multiplexed space communications link

This paper describes a command encoding scheme which was conceived to provide the necessary error protection for digital commands from a ground-based terminal to a manned spacecraft. The selected approach is compatible with a time-division multiplexing scheme which combines the command channel with two digital voice channels prior to transmission over the RF link. The command encoding scheme is also fully compatible with a channel encoding strategy which is applied to the multiplexed bit sequence (commands plus voice) to provide increased link efficiency. Implementation aspects of the command encoder and decoder are discussed and the system end-to-end performance improvement provided by the command encoding scheme is calculated.

A parametric study of the complexity of sequential decoders, volume 1

The complexity and performance of practical sequential decoders were studied. Upon comparing sequential decoders with Viterbi decoders, it was found that sequential decoders outperform Viterbi decoders at low data rates (19.2 to 76.8 kbps) for the same complexity. However, Viterbi decoders are less complex than sequential decoders at high data rates (9.1 Mbps) for the same performance.

A parametric study of the complexity of sequential decoders, volume 2

Plots are presented of complexity versus required signal energy per bit/single-sided noise spectral density to obtain an output probability of error per bit of 0.0001 for an ideal coherent PSK demodulation. Transfer function of convolutional codes and techniques of branch and reference phase synchronization are considered.

Performance versus complexity of Viterbi and sequential decoding.

Performance versus complexity is compared for the Viterbi maximum likelihood decoder and the sequential decoder of convolutional codes for the additive white Gaussian noise memoryless channel. It is found that sequential decoders outperform Viterbi decoders at low data rates (less than 100 kbps) for the same complexity. However, Viterbi decoders are less complex than sequential decoders at high data rates (10 Mbps and greater) for the same performance.
