Exploration of alloy surface and slurry modification to improve oxidation life of fused silicide coated niobium alloys.

Edge and surface modification of niobium alloys prior to coating with Si-20Cr-20Fe and slurry composition modification were investigated to improve performance in a 1370 C, ambient pressure, slow-cycle test. The best coating obtained was Si-20Cr-20Mn with an average life of 63 cycles compared to 40 for Si-20Cr-20Fe on FS-85 (100 percent improvement in weight parity life). Edge beading extended the lives of Si-20Cr-20Fe coated Cb-752 and FS-85 to 57 and 41 cycles, respectively (50 and 20 percent improvements in weight parity life, respectively).

Oxidation of TD nickel at 1050 C and 1200 C as compared with three grades of nickel of different purity

The isothermal oxidation of three nickels of different purity, Ni-200, Ni-270, and JM-Ni, was compared with that of TD-Ni in air at 1050 and 1200 C. The samples were oxidized as ground, as polished, or as annealed and polished. Weight change, metal loss, scale thickness, oxide morphology, and scale texture were determined. In degree of oxidation, TD-Ni was nearly the same as the higher purity materials, Ni-270 and JM-Ni; and less pure Ni-200 oxidized more than the others. However, in microstructure and scale texture the TD-Ni more closely resembled Ni-200. Grinding only charged the texture of the oxides of Ni_200 and TD-Ni.

Hydrogen plasma tests of some insulating coating systems for the nuclear rocket thrust chamber

Several plasma-sprayed and slurry-coated insulating coating systems were evaluated for structural stability in a low-pressure hot hydrogen environment at a maximum heat flux of 19.6 million watts/sq meter. The heat was provided by an electric-arc plasma generator. The coating systems consisted of a number of thin layers of metal oxides and/or metals. The materials included molybdenum, nichrome, tungsten, alumina, zirconia, and chromia. The study indicates potential usefulness in this environment for some coatings, and points up the need for improved coating application techniques.

W, Al2O3 and ZrO2(CaO) surface modifications altered coating crack frequency and microstructure and increased life somewhat.

Oxidation resistant claddings for superalloys.

The oxidation protection afforded IN-100 and WI-52 superalloys by thin claddings of NiCrAlSi and FeCrAlY alloys was examined primarily at 1090 C. Comparisons were made with commercial aluminide coatings using cyclic furnace and high velocity burner rig tests. In furnace tests, NiCrAlSi on IN-100 and FeCrAlY on WI-52 performed as well or better than two aluminide coatings. Burner rig performance of the FeCrAlY cladding was better than that of the NiCrAlSi cladding on IN-100 and the aluminide coating on WI-52, but less than the aluminide coating on IN-100. An aluminized NiCrAlSi cladding performed better than any coating or cladding.
