Heat treating of a lamellar eutectic alloy (gamma/gamma prime + delta)

Eutectic superalloys are being developed at several laboratories for application as aircraft gas turbine airfoils. One such alloy was subjected to several heat treatments to determine if its mechanical properties could be improved. It was found that by partially dissolving the alloy at 1210 C and then aging at 900 C the tensile strength can be increased about 12 percent at temperatures up to 900 C. At 1040 C no change in tensile strength was observed. Times to rupture were measured between 760 and 1040 C and were essentially the same or greater than for as-grown material. Tensile and rupture ductility of the alloy are reduced by heat treatment. Photographs of the microstructure are shown.

Effects of sigma-phase formation on some mechanical properties of a wrought nickel-base superalloy (IN-100)

The effect of sigma phase formation on an extruded and forged nickel base superalloy with the composition of the casting alloy IN-100 was studied. By adding only aluminum and titanium to remelt stock, three compositions were produced which had varying propensities for sigma formation. These compositions were given a four step heat treatment and were stress-ruptured or tensile tested. The very sigma prone composition had a shorter rupture life than the sigma-free or moderately sigma prone compositions when tested at 843 and 885 C. Elongation in room temperature tensile tests was considerably lower for the very sigma prone composition than for the other two wrought compositions after prolonged exposure at 732 or 843 C.

The gamma-gamma prime region of the Ni-Al-Cr-Ti-W-Mo system at 850 C

The compositional limits of gamma and gamma-prime phases in nickel-base superalloys are determined experimentally. It is found that gamma-prime had the following range of compositions for the various elements contained in this phase: 72.1 to 78.0 at.% Ni; 7.8 to 17.3 at.% Al; 1.5 to 8.9 at.% Cr; 0.3 to 13.9 at.% Ti, 0.0 to 3.9 at.% Mo, and 0.0 to 7.2 at.% W. The composition of gamma varied as follows: Ni is balanced; 1.9 to 15.4 at.% Al; 6.6 to 30.7 at.% Cr; 0.0 to 3.1 at.% Ti; 0.0 to 8.7 at.% Mo; and 0.0 to 5.0 at.% W. W additions to the gamma appeared to increase somewhat the solubility of Al in this phase. Mo and W added together decreased the solubility of Al in gamma.

Cobalt-base alloy

A microstructurally stable, high strength cobalt based alloy for use at elevated temperatures to 2125 F was developed. The alloys are particularly directed for use in stators and other low stress components in advanced gas turbines.

Advanced alloy design technique: High temperature cobalt base superalloy

Advanced alloy design technique was developed for treating alloys that will have extended life in service at high temperature and intermediate temperatures. Process stabilizes microstructure of the alloy by designing it so that compound identified with embrittlement is eliminated or minimized. Design process is being used to develop both nickel and cobalt-base superalloys.

The effect of alloying on gamma and gamma prime in nickel-base superalloys

An investigation was conducted to determine the compositional limits of gamma and gamma prime phases in nickel-base superalloys. Fifty-one nickel-base alloys were melted under vacuum and heat treated for 4 hours at 1190 C followed by 1008 hours at 850 C. The alloys had the following composition ranges: A1 4.0 to 13 atomic percent, Cr 6.5 to 20.5 percent, Ti 0.25 to 4.75 percent, Mo 0.0 to 6.0 percent, and W 0.0 to 4.0 percent. The residues from the ammonium sulfate electrolytic extraction for the two-phase alloys were analyzed chemically and by X-ray diffraction. The results of the investigation were used to assemble a mathematical model of the gamma-gamma prime region of the Ni-Al-Cr-Ti-Mo-W system. A computer program was written to analyze the model of the phase diagram. Some of these results are also presented graphically. The resulting model is capable of satisfactorily predicting the compositions of conjugate gamma-gamma prime phases in the alloys investigated and twelve of fifteen commercial superalloys studied.

Cobalt-tungsten, ferromagnetic high-temperature alloy

Cobalt-base alloy which combines high temperature strength and magnetic properties has a composition in weight percent of 7-1/2 tungsten, 2-1/2 iron, 1 titanium, 1/2 zirconium, 1/2 carbon, and the balance cobalt. It may be used as construction material for electric motors and generators operating at high temperatures.
