Measuring Furnace/Sample Heat-Transfer Coefficients

Complicated, inexact calculations now unnecessary. Device called HTX used to simulate and measure transfer of heat between directional-solidification crystal-growth furnace and ampoule containing sample of crystalline to be grown. Yields measurement data used to calculate heat-transfer coefficients directly, without need for assumptions or prior knowledge of physical properties of furnace, furnace gas, or specimen. Determines not only total heat-transfer coefficients but also coefficients of transfer of heat in different modes.

Unsteady convection in tin in a Bridgman configuration

When a quiescent fluid is heated sufficiently from below, steady convection will begin. Further heating will cause oscillatory and then turbulent flow. Theoretical results predict that the frequency of oscillation will depend on the square root of the Rayleigh number in the fluid. In the current work, liquid tin was heated from below for three aspect ratios, h/R = 3.4, 5.3, and 7.0. The experimental results are curve-fit for the square-root relation and also for a linear relation. The fit of the expression is evaluated using a correlation coefficient. An estimate for the first critical Rayleigh number (onset of steady convection) is obtained for both expressions. These values are compared to previous experimental results.

Oscillation phase relations in a Bridgman system

The thermal conditions under which convection in a tin melt undergoes the transition from steady flow to time-dependent flow are investigated. Previously, it has been shown that crystals that are directionally solidified from a time-dependent melt will have a larger defect density and increased chance of compositional striations. Thus, it is important for this transition to be well characterized. The experimental results to be presented were obtained from a two-zone Bridgman furnace with a middle insulation zone. Thermocouples were placed on the axis and on the outer wall of a cylindrical vitreous silica tube which contained molten tin. The phase relations between temperature oscillations measured at different positions in the cell are discussed. Fourier transforms are used to investigate the increasing complexity of convection as the temperature gradient is increased.

Microgravity science at Langley Research Center

Although space research is still in an embryonic state, a combination of Earth based and space flight experiments are being coupled to yield a better understanding of the complex interaction of heat and fluid flow on the dynamics of crystal growth. Continued efforts on the ground as well as additional flight opportunities are needed to continue the drive to fully understand the advantages, both scientifically and economically, of microgravity crystal growth.

Temperature Fluctuations During Crystal Growth

Technique developed to deconvolve period and relative amplitude of fluctuations of heat flow inBridgman crystal growth. Temperature-measuring device with enough sensitivity and frequency response to make desired measurements inserted close as possible to substance monitored. Time-dependent temperature response recorded, and time domain response converted to frequency domain for further analysis. Fast fourier transform (FFT) of data on temperature oscillations shows particular behavior at some specific frequencies corresponding with striations, or defects observed on crystal. Useful procedure to help determine sources of some growth-induced crystalline defects. Other processes sensitive to small temperature fluctuations, such as diffusion, precipitation, and corrsion, benefit from technique.

Imaging Of Directional-Solidification Interfaces

X-ray and gamma-ray technique developed at NASA Langley Research Center enables melt/solid interface to be observed visually during crystal growth by directional solidification in Bridgman furnace. Technique used to observe movement and shape of interface in germanium and in lead tin telluride. Valuable tool in efforts to grow seeded semiconductor materials in Bridgman furnaces.

Research Furnace for Crystal Preparation

Three-zone furnace tested and characterized for preparation of lead-tintelluride (LTT) crystals. Tests show temperature in furnace controlled to obtain constant rate of movement of high-temperature isotherm down length of furnace. Temperature profiles accurately controlled by three independent heaters. Control software brings separate heaters to any desired temperature.

Advanced Vapor-Supply Manifold

Advanced vapor-supply manifold solves problem of manifold purging. Design virtually eliminates dead gas volumes in manifold system. System incorporates special valve into manifold in way that leaks and contamination problems of previous systems, which use tees and three-port valves, are minimized or eliminated in both main manifold line and in supply line. Of considerable use in gas manifold systems where even small amounts of gaseous impurities constitute problem or where more than one gaseous material used in single system.
