Differential electron scattering cross sections for the first optically forbidden and resonance transitions in Mg II, Zn II and Cd II

Differential electron scattering cross sections have been measured for dipole-forbidden and resonance transitions in Mg II, Zn II and Cd II in the angular range theta = 4-17 deg at 50 eV. These provide the first recorded angular distributions for an optically forbidden transition. It is found that while the cross section for excitation of the 4s (2)S-3d(9)4s(2) (2)D transition in Zn II is small, those for the 3s (2)S-3d (2)D, 4s (2)S (unresolved lines) in Mg II, and the 5s (2)S-4d(9)5s(2) D in Cd II are comparable in magnitude with the cross sections for resonance excitation. In addition, for Cd II it is found that the allowed and forbidden transitions have very similar angular distributions, and it is proposed that excitation to the 2D state may be dominated by a virtual 'double-dipole' transition via the 2P state. Also, the total excitation cross section of the resonance 2P state in Cd II is a factor of four higher than that predicted by the Gaunt factor approximation, suggesting that the accepted value for the oscillator strength may be too low.

High-Flux Atomic-Oxygen Source

Beams of pure ground-state oxygen atoms produced. Accelerated electrons strike beam of O2 gas in dissociative-attachment region, producing O- ions. O- ions accelerated to desired final energy and pass through photodetachment region to form 0(3P) atoms. These pass between electric field plates to remove O- and e and strike target. Designed specifically to study degradation of materials and spacecraft glow phenomena in low Earth orbits, used to study gas-phase collision phenomena involving energetic oxygen atoms.

Molecular Thermal-Electron Detectors

Low-energy electrons detected with high resolution and sensitivity by their collisions with certain molecules. In thermal-electron-detection application, ambient plasma swept into collision chamber. Chamber designed to reduce stray electric fields to negligible levels and prevent inelastic and superelastic collisions with walls of collision-chamber repeller element. Instrument based on molecular detection performs high-resolution threshold photoelectron spectroscopy. Also used to detect fluorocarbons and chlorocarbons in upper atmosphere by their interaction with thermal electrons.

Differential electron scattering cross sections for the 3 (2)S to 3 (2)P0 h, k transitions in Mg II - Comparison of experiment and theory

Angular differential electron scattering cross sections are reported for the unresolved inelastic 3s (2)S to 3p (2)P0 h, k transitions in Mg II for the first time. Relative differential cross sections have been measured at 35 eV and 50 eV in the angular range of Theta between 6 and 17 deg using the newly developed electron energy loss technique in a crossed electron-ion beam geometry. Theoretical values have been calculated in a five-state close-coupling approximation in which 3s, 3p, 3d, 4s, and 4p states were included, and to which measurements were normalized at Theta = 12 deg.

s-wave threshold in electron attachment - Observations and cross sections in CCl4 and SF6 at ultralow electron energies

The threshold photoionization method was used to study low-energy electron attachment phenomena in and cross sections of CCl4 and SF6 compounds, which have applications in the design of gaseous dielectrics and diffuse discharge opening switches. Measurements were made at electron energies from below threshold to 140 meV at resolutions of 6 and 8 meV. A narrow resolution-limited structure was observed in electron attachment to CCl4 and SF6 at electron energies below 10 meV, which is attributed to the divergence of the attachment cross section in the limit epsilon, l approaches zero. The results are compared with experimental collisional-ionization results, electron-swarm unfolded cross sections, and earlier threshold photoionization data.

Reversal ion source - A new source of negative ion beams

A new type of ion source utilizing beams of electrons and target molecules, rather than a diffuse, volume plasma, is described. The source utilizes an electrostatic electron 'mirror' which reverses trajectories in an electron beam, producing electrons at their turning point having a distribution of velocities centered at zero velocity. A gas which attaches zero-velocity electrons is introduced at this turning point. Negative ions are produced by an attachment or dissociative attachment process. For many of the thermal electron-attaching molecules the cross sections can be quite large, varying as the inverse square root of the electron energy or just the s-wave threshold law. The efficiency and current density of the ion source for production of Cl(-) through the large, thermal energy attachment process is estimated. It is argued that the source can be used for the production of negative ions through attachment resonances located at higher energies as well.

s-wave threshold in electron attachment - Results in 2-C4F6 and CFCl3 at ultra-low electron energies

Electron attachment lineshapes and cross sections are reported for the processes 2-C4F6(-)/2-C4F6 and Cl(-)/CFCl3 at electron energies of 0-120 and 0-140 meV, and at resolutions of 6 and 7 meV (FWHM), respectively. As in previous measurements in CCl4 and SF6, the results show resolution-limited narrow structure in the cross section at electron energies below 15 meV. This structure arises from the divergence of the s-wave cross section in the limit of zero electron energy. Comparisons are given with swarm-measured results, and with collisional ionization (high-Rydberg attachment) data in this energy range.

Angular distributions for electron impact excitation of ions from energy-loss spectra measurements

Energy-loss spectra for excitation of the 2S to 2PO transitions in ZNII and CdII by electrons have been observed for the first time. Differential scattering cross sections are reported at 75 eV electron energy. Comparisons are made to close-coupling theory for the 4,2S to 4,2P transition in ZnII. In CdII comparisons are made to the 5,2S(1/2) to 5,2S(3/2) integral cross section from absolute emission measurements, to theoretical results for the analogous 2S to 2P transition in ZnII, and to Gaunt-factor calculations. A description of the crossed beam apparatus is given, and conversion of scattering intensity to absolute cross section discussed.

Electron-ion collisions in high temperature plasmas

Several newly observed electron-ion collision phenomena that occur in high-temperature plasmas containing electrons and ions of energies 10-10,000 eV, or temperature of 10 to the 5th to 10 to the 8th K, are reviewed. These are the phenomena of dielectronic recombination, excitation-autoionization, and electron energy-loss scattering as measured in crossed (90 deg) and merged electron-ion beam experiments.

Angular distribution for electron excitation of the 4(2)S yields 4(2)P transition in Zn II - Comparison of experiment and theory

Differential electron-scattering cross sections for inelastic excitation of an ion have been measured for the first time. Experiments were carried out in a cross electron-ion beam geometry for the 4(2)S yields 4(2)P transition in Zn II at 75 eV. In addition, differential cross sections were calculated at energies between 15 and 100 eV in a five-state close-coupling approximation in which 4s, 4p, 3d(9)4s(2), 5s, and 4 d states were included. Agreement in shape between theory and experiment at 75 eV is excellent.

Electron attachment cross sections for the processes SF6-/SF6 and Cl-/CFCl3 are calculated in a local theory using a model in which diatomic-like potential energy curves for the normal modes are constructed from available spectroscopic data. Thermally populated vibrational and rotational levels are included. Good agreement is found with experimental cross sections in the energy range 5-100 meV for a particular choice of potential energy curve parameters.

Experimental SF6/-//SF6 and Cl/-//CFC13 electron-attachment cross sections in the energy range 0-200 meV

Experimental cross sections for the electron-attachment processes for SF6(-)/SF6 and Cl(-)/CFl3 are reported in the energy range 0-200 meV by normalizing each attachment line shape to measurement of a thermal rate coefficient. When the same ion states are detected, good agreement is found between present values, for which a monoenergetic electron source is used, and swarm-unfolded results. The present data constitute a new limit for cross sections reported at high resolution at the lowest electron energy.
