Dopant levels in large nanocrystals using stochastic optimally tuned range-separated hybrid density functional theory

In this work, we apply a stochastic version of an optimally tuned range-separated hybrid functional to provide insight on the electronic properties of P- and B- doped Si nanocrystals of experimentally relevant sizes. We show that we can use the range-separation parameter for undoped systems to calculate accurate results for dopant activation energies. We apply this strategy for tuning functionals to study doped nanocrystals up to 2.5 nm in diameter at the hybrid functional level. In this confinement regime, the P- and B- dopants have large activation energies and have strongly localized states that lie deep within the energy gaps. Structural relaxation plays a greater role for B-substituted dopants and contributes to the increase in activation energy when the B dopant is near the nanocrystal surface.

Dynamical Conditions of Ice Supersaturation and Ice Nucleation in Convective Systems: A Comparative Analysis Between in Situ Aircraft Observations and WRF Simulations

Occurrence frequency and dynamical conditions of ice supersaturation (ISS, where relative humidity with respect to ice (RHi) greater than 100%) are examined in the upper troposphere around convective activity. Comparisons are conducted between in situ airborne observations and the Weather Research and Forecasting model simulations using four double-moment microphysical schemes at temperatures less than or or equal to -40degdegC. All four schemes capture both clear-sky and in-cloud ISS conditions. However, the clear-sky (in-cloud) ISS conditions are completely (significantly) limited to the RHi thresholds of the Cooper parameterization. In all of the simulations, ISS occurrence frequencies are higher by approximately 3-4 orders of magnitude at higher updraft speeds (greater than 1 m s(exp -1) than those at the lower updraft speeds when ice water content (IWC) greater than 0.01 gm(exp -3), while observations show smaller differences up to approximately 1-2 orders of magnitude. The simulated ISS also occurs less frequently at weaker updrafts and downdrafts than observed. These results indicate that the simulations have a greater dependence on stronger updrafts to maintain/generate ISS at higher IWC. At lower IWC (less than or equal or 0.01 gm(exp -3), simulations unexpectedly show lower ISS frequencies at stronger updrafts. Overall, the Thompson aerosol-aware scheme has the closest magnitudes and frequencies of ISS greater than 20% to the observations, and the modified Morrison has the closest correlations between ISS frequencies and vertical velocity at higher IWC and number density. The Cooper parameterization often generates excessive ice crystals and therefore suppresses the frequency and magnitude of ISS, indicating that it should be initiated at higher ISS (e.g.,lees than or equal to 25%).

Analysis and Simulation for a Spotlight-Mode Aircraft SAR in Circular Flight Path

A wide azimuth beam SAR can offer higher resolution or wider azimuth viewing angle; two factors that help better characterize the backscattering property of targets for various science applications. One disadvantage of wide beam SAR is that a much higher pulse repetition frequency (PRF) is usually required since PRF is proportional to the radar beam angle. This problem can be resolved using a spotlight-mode concept: steering a narrow beam SAR to a fixed spot on the ground. The drawback of a spotlight-mode SAR is its limited coverage. A conventional spotlight-mode SAR operates along a straight line path as shown in Figure 1. It can be shown that spotlight-mode SAR that follows a straight line path has difficulty in achieving the ultimate resolution of lambda/4. It also cannot utilize the full 180 degree of azimuth viewing angle that can be attained only when the synthetic aperture length approaches infinity.

Achromatic optical correlator for white light pattern recognition

An achromatic optical correlator using spatially multiplexed achromatic matched spatial filters (MSFs) for white light optical pattern recognition is presented. The MSF array is synthesizd using a monochromatic laser and its achromaticity is achieved by adjusting the scale and spatial carrier frequency of each MSF to accommodate the wavelength variations in white light correlation detections. Systems analysis and several experimental results showing the correlation peak intensity using white-light illumination are presented.
