Unveiling the role of structural vacancies in Mn-based Prussian blue analogues for energy storage applications

Prussian blue analogues (PBAs) are promising cathode materials for monovalent- and multivalent-ion batteries due to their large framework structures. Nevertheless, the influence of lattice vacancies on their electrochemical performance has not been thoroughly clarified, hindering the further development of PBAs. Here we identify two types of functional vacancies, i.e., structural vacancies (SVs) and incidental vacancies (IVs), in manganese hexacyanoferrate (MnHCF) through synchrotron-based X-ray absorption spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations. Unlike structurally disordered IVs, the introduction of structurally ordered SVs promotes ion transport and reduces the interaction between host ions and the framework, enabling improved cycling and rate performance. The controllable adjustment of SVs in K-rich MnHCF is achieved through a co-reactant method. Furthermore, the partial introduction of SVs in K-rich MnHCF is demonstrated to favor both a milder structural evolution by alleviating the Jahn–Teller distortion of Mn 3+ and a stable dynamic process of interface reaction. As a result, this study unveils the potential importance of incorporating structural vacancies into MnHCF for advanced energy storage applications.

Chemical Long-Range Disorder in Prussian Blue Analogues for Potassium Storage

Ordered Prussian blue analogues (PBAs) are vital cathode materials for ion storage, but strong interactions between the framework and host ions, especially large ions like K + , hinder ion migration, leading to poor diffusion kinetics and reduced reaction activity. Here, in this study, we present an approach to overcome this challenge by constructing chemical long-range disorder (LRD) in PBAs, involving maintaining inherent local coordination while introducing disorder over long-range spatial dimensions. Order control is achieved by introducing a large-sized lattice to disrupt the original lattice growth during synthesis. Unlike traditional monocrystalline particles, the abundant grain boundaries in the obtained LRD structure create significant potential fluctuations, generating additional electric fields that enhance ion transport. Furthermore, the short lattice coherence length reduces interaction between the framework and K + . These factors collectively contribute to the improved electrochemical activity of LRD PBAs during K + storage. This finding opens new avenues for designing PBA structures and offers insights into their structure-electrochemical performance relationship.

Structure optimization with stochastic density functional theory

Linear-scaling techniques for Kohn–Sham density functional theory are essential to describe the ground state properties of extended systems. Still, these techniques often rely on the localization of the density matrix or accurate embedding approaches, limiting their applicability. In contrast, stochastic density functional theory (sDFT) achieves linear- and sub-linear scaling by statistically sampling the ground state density without relying on embedding or imposing localization. In return, ground state observables, such as the forces on the nuclei, fluctuate in sDFT, making optimizing the nuclear structure a highly non-trivial problem. In this work, we combine the most recent noise-reduction schemes for sDFT with stochastic optimization algorithms to perform structure optimization within sDFT. We compare the performance of the stochastic gradient descent approach and its variations (stochastic gradient descent with momentum) with stochastic optimization techniques that rely on the Hessian, such as the stochastic Broyden–Fletcher–Goldfarb–Shanno algorithm. In conclusion, we further provide a detailed assessment of the computational efficiency and its dependence on the optimization parameters of each method for determining the ground state structure of bulk silicon with varying supercell dimensions.

Modeling and Analysis of a Novel Offshore Binary Species Free-Floating Longline Macroalgal Farming System

The investigation of innovative macroalgal cultivation is important and needed to optimize farming operations, increase biomass production, reduce the impact on the ecosystem, and lower system and operational costs. However, most macroalgal farming systems (MFSs) are stationary, which need to occupy a substantial coastal area, require extensive investment in farm infrastructure, and cost high fertilizer and anchoring expenses. This study aims to model, analyze, and support a novel binary species free-floating longline macroalgal cultivation concept. The expected outcomes could provide a basis for the design and application of the novel MFS to improve biomass production, decrease costs, and reduce the impact on the local ecosystem. In this paper, Saccharina latissima and Nereocystis luetkeana were modeled and validated, and coupled with longline to simulate the binary species MFS free float in various growth periods and associated locations along the US west coast. Further, the numerical predictions indicated the possibility of failure on the longline and breakage at the kelp holdfasts is low. However, the large forces due to an instantaneous change in dynamic loads caused by loss of hydrostatic buoyancy when the longline stretches out of the water would damage the kelps. Buoy-longline contact interactions could damage the buoy, resulting in the loss of the system by sinking. Furthermore, the kelp-longline and kelp-kelp entanglements could potentially cause kelp damage.

Colloidal immobilized protein based on stable colloid of TiO 2 nanoparticles at neutral pH for protein microarray

A stable colloid of titanium dioxide nanoparticles was specially prepared at neutral pH so that horse radish peroxidase as a model protein can interact and be immobilized with colloidal titanium dioxide nanoparticles, while usually titanium dioxide colloid is only stable at acidic condition. Colloidal immobilized peroxidase based on titanium dioxide nanoparticles at neutral pH were highly active and stably dispersible in aqueous solution. The resulting colloidal immobilized peroxidase can be readily printed using a standard microarray printer for facile fabrication of protein microarrays. After printing, the colloidal immobilized protein formed uniform membrane of proteinated nanoparticles with 3-dimensional nanoconfiguration. Finally, the protein microarray sensitivity based on peroxidase-titanium dioxide nanoparticles was nearly 20 times as high as that using conventional technology.

Friction reduction for engine components

The present invention relates to techniques for lowering friction between moving surfaces of, for example, an internal combustion engine. Friction reduction is achieved by adding texture modifications to surfaces that come in contact with each other. Texture modifications that reduce friction in accordance with the present invention include dimples of varying geometries and depths ion the surfaces of components. The present invention also relates to the fabrication technique for applying the texture to the surfaces. In another embodiment, the patterned soft mask is applied onto a large surface (flat or curved including cylindrical rollers surfaces) to be followed by electrochemical etching to imprint the textures onto the component And, in another embodiment, a diamond-like-carbon (DLC) film may be applied to the turbine component to also reduce friction.

Stochastic density functional theory: Real- and energy-space fragmentation for noise reduction

Stochastic density functional theory (sDFT) is becoming a valuable tool for studying ground-state properties of extended materials. The computational complexity of describing the Kohn-Sham orbitals is replaced by introducing a set of random (stochastic) orbitals leading to linear and often sub-linear scaling of certain ground-state observables at the account of introducing a statistical error. Schemes to reduce the noise are essential, for example, for determining the structure using the forces obtained from sDFT. Recently, we have introduced two embedding schemes to mitigate the statistical fluctuations in the electron density and resultant forces on the nuclei. Both techniques were based on fragmenting the system either in real space or slicing the occupied space into energy windows, allowing for a significant reduction in the statistical fluctuations. For chemical accuracy, further reduction of the noise is required, which could be achieved by increasing the number of stochastic orbitals. However, the convergence is relatively slow as the statistical error scales as 1 / N χ according to the central limit theorem, where N χ is the number of random orbitals. In this paper, we combined the embedding schemes mentioned above and introduced a new approach that builds on overlapped fragments and energy windows. The new approach significantly lowers the noise for ground-state properties, such as the electron density, total energy, and forces on the nuclei, as demonstrated for a G-center in bulk silicon.

Structural visualization of transcription activated by a multidrug-sensing MerR family regulator

Bacterial RNA polymerase (RNAP) holoenzyme initiates transcription by recognizing the conserved –35 and –10 promoter elements that are optimally separated by a 17-bp spacer. The MerR family of transcriptional regulators activate suboptimal 19–20 bp spacer promoters in response to myriad cellular signals, ranging from heavy metals to drug-like compounds. The regulation of transcription by MerR family regulators is not fully understood. Here we report one crystal structure of a multidrug-sensing MerR family regulator EcmrR and nine cryo-electron microscopy structures that capture the EcmrR-dependent transcription process from promoter opening to initial transcription to RNA elongation. These structures reveal that EcmrR is a dual ligand-binding factor that reshapes the suboptimal 19-bp spacer DNA to enable optimal promoter recognition, sustains promoter remodeling to stabilize initial transcribing complexes, and finally dissociates from the promoter to reverse DNA remodeling and facilitate the transition to elongation. Our findings yield a comprehensive model for transcription regulation by MerR family factors and provide insights into the transition from transcription initiation to elongation.

HYDRODYNAMIC ANALYSIS OF MACROALGAE LOCAL MODEL USING COMPUTATIONAL FLUID DYNAMICS

In this article, a local scale, fully nonlinear coupled fluid-structural interaction (FSI) sugar kelp model has been developed using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method. In this model, to be consistent with available experimental data, the sugar kelp is approximated as elongated rectangles with smoothed isosceles triangles at the ends and a single kelp model with one end fixed in a channel with constant current model is developed. Several different current speeds are simulated, and the resulting drag forces and calculated drag coefficients are validated by comparison with experimental data from the literature. In a previous study, a global scale model was developed using a computational structural dynamics (CSD) method to simulate macroalgae farming system and guide the system configuration design. In the global scale model, the hydrodynamic forces are calculated using Morison’s equation and the kinematics and dynamics of the sugar kelp are simplified and the group of kelps attached to the long line is modeled as a slender structure with the same length and an effective diameter such that the volumes are consistent with the real physical system. This simplified model matches the weight and buoyancy but adjusting the hydrodynamic properties when the general hydrodynamic coefficients are employed. Therefore, optimal hydrodynamic coefficients used in global scale model were determined to obtain the hydrodynamic force more accurately. The validated local scale model is then be applied to determine the hydrodynamic coefficients of the simplified sugar kelp model for global dynamic analysis.

Range-separated stochastic resolution of identity: Formulation and application to second-order Green’s function theory

We develop a range-separated stochastic resolution of identity (RS-SRI) approach for the four-index electron repulsion integrals, where the larger terms (above a predefined threshold) are treated using a deterministic RI and the remaining terms are treated using a SRI. The approach is implemented within a second-order Green’s function formalism with an improved O(N 3 ) scaling with the size of the basis set, N. Moreover, the RS approach greatly reduces the statistical error compared to the full stochastic version [T. Y. Takeshita et al., J. Chem. Phys. 151, 044114 (2019)], resulting in computational speedups of ground and excited state energies of nearly two orders of magnitude, as demonstrated for hydrogen dimer chains and water clusters.
