Criteria for analysis-test correlation of structural dynamic systems

A rational criterion for structural dynamic analysis-test correlation has been established by using a matrix perturbation technique. This criterion can be used for the verification of an analytical model by the test results. Also, the same technique can be applied to update the analytical results by using the test results without repeating the entire analytical procedure. A sample problem has been used to demonstrate this technique. Very satisfactory results are obtained with only the first-order perturbation solution included for transient loading. For periodic loading, higher-order perturbation solutions are needed to achieve the same accuracy.

Development and correlation: Viking Orbiter analytical dynamic model with modal test

The Viking Orbiter (VO) experience in the achievement of a mathematical model is described along with the following project activities: (1) the generation of the overall plan for load analysis, an analytical dynamic model, and development tests; (2) the performance of VO subsystem static and modal tests; and (3) the correlation of the VO system model analysis and test. Success is attributed to the coordination of analysis and test using substructure modal coupling techniques.

Analysis of nonlinear vibrations of cylinders

In study of geometric nonlinear vibrations, infinite, long, thin-walled cylinder was analyzed under periodic, dynamic loading to demonstrate that some nonlinear phenomena cannot be obtained by straight-forward numerical solution methods. Results demonstrate that nonlinear phenomenon in large amplitude vibration traveling-wave condition can be predicted by analysis.

On the dynamic stability of multilayer sandwich plates

Study of the dynamic stability of plates which are constructed of several alternating soft and hard layers and are subjected to time-dependent periodic in-plane loads. A theory that accounts for all of these effects is presented for multilayer sandwich plates. The plate thickness consists of (k - 1) orthotropic soft core layers sandwiched between k hard isotropic membrane layers, each of which may have a different thickness and elastic properties. It is assumed that the core layers carry only the transverse shear stresses, while the hard membrane layers carry the in-plane normal and shear stresses. The complementary variational principle for dynamics is used to derive the governing differential equations and the necessary boundary conditions for the dynamic stability of the sandwich plate. The equations governing the vibration of the plate and those governing its static stability are deduced from the more general equations for dynamic stability.

Damper design from a structural engineer's point of view

A nonlinear structural analysis, employing the nonlinear damper characteristics obtained from a damper test, was successfully performed on the Mariner spacecraft's solar-panel system, and the result was compared with results from a system-level spacecraft test in which some solar-panel tip dampers bottomed at a certain frequency. The analysis showed that the damper bottoming was attributable to a jump phenomenon that can result when a damper's response is not single-valued at some frequency.

Finite element formulation for linear thermoviscoelastic materials

Report presents the finite difference equations in time and finite element matrix equations in space for general linear thermovisoelastic problems. The equations are derived for a general three-dimensional body but are applicable to one- and two-dimensional configurations with minor changes.
