An approximate loop transfer recovery method for designing fixed-order compensators

A method for designing fixed-order dynamic compensators for multivariable time invariant linear systems is presented which is based on the minimization of a linear quadratic performance index. The present formulation is performed in an output feedback setting which uses an observer cononical form to represent the compensator dynamics. Techniques for penalizing the plant and compensator states and for selecting the distribution on initial conditions such that the loop transfer matrix approximates that of a full-state feedback design have been developed. The effectiveness of the method is demonstrated using the examples of the pointing of a flexible structure and a helicopter flight control problem.

A near optimal guidance algorithm for aero-assisted orbit transfer

The paper presents a near optimal guidance algorithm for aero-assited orbit plane change, based on minimizing the energy loss during the atmospheric portion of the maneuver. The guidance algorithm makes use of recent results obtained from energy state approximations and singular perturbation analysis of optimal heading change for a hypersonic gliding vehicle. This earlier work ignored the terminal constraint on altitude needed to insure that the vehicle exits that atmosphere. Thus, the resulting guidance algorithm was only appropriate for maneuvering reentry vehicle guidance. In the context of singular perturbation theory, a constraint on final altitude gives rise to a difficult terminal boundary layer problem, which cannot be solved in closed form. This paper will demonstrate the near optimality of a predictive/corrective guidance algorithm for the terminal maneuver. Comparisons are made to numerically optimized trajectories for a range or orbit plane angles.

Optimal reentry guidance for aeroassisted orbit transfer vehicles

A three-state model is presented for analyzing the problem of optimal changes in heading with minimum energy loss for a hypersonic gliding vehicle. A further model order reduction to a single state model is examined using singular perturbation theory. The optimal solution for the reduced problem defines an optimal altitude profile dependent on the current energy of the vehicle. A separate boundary-layer analysis is used to account for altitude and flight path angle dynamics, and to obtain lift and bank angle control solutions. By considering alternative approximations to solve the boundary-layer problem, three guidance laws are obtained, each having a feedback form. The guidance laws are evaluated for a hypothetical vehicle, and compared to an optimal solution obtained using a multiple shooting algorithm.

Optimal heading change with minimum energy loss for a hypersonic gliding vehicle

A three state model is presented for analyzing the problem of optimal changes in heading with minimum energy loss for a hypersonic gliding vehicle. A further model order reduction to a single state model is examined using singular perturbation theory. The optimal solution for the reduced problem defines an optimal altitude profile dependent on the current energy of the vehicle, and the corresponding optimal lift and bank angle. A separate boundary layer analysis, based on an expansion of the necessary conditions about the reduced solution, is used to account for altitude and flight path angle dynamics and to derive a guidance law in feedback form. The guidance law is evaluated for a hypothetical vehicle.

Fixed order compensator design based on frequency shaped cost functionals

This paper treats the design of fixed order compensators using frequency shaped cost functionals. The formulation is done in an output feedback setting which exploits an observer canonical form to represent the compensator dynamics. The major advantages of the design approach are that the order of the compensator is fixed by the design process, and it is not necessary to realize the frequency shaping dynamics as an integral part of the compensator design. This avoids the two-step approach of full state feedback design followed by the design of an observer, which in the case of a full order observer requires a compensator of order n + nf where n is the order of the plant and nf is the order of the frequency shaping realization. The formulation also precludes the use of direct feedback of the plant output, thus reducing the effect of sensor noise and improving the robustness to high frequency unmodeled dynamics. A structural vibration model describing the fast dynamics of a lightweight flexible arm is used as an example to illustrate the design procedure.

Singular perturbation analysis of AOTV related trajectory optimization problems

The problem of aeroassisted orbital plane change is discussed. This maneuver requires the use of three impulses - one to deorbit, one to reorbit and one to recircularize at the new orbit. The orbit plane change is effected entirely in the atmosphere through the use of lift and bank angle control. For circular orbits of nearly equal radii, it can be shown that the fuel consumption is minimized by minimizing the energy loss in the atmospheric portion of the trajectory. The research explores the use of singular perturbation theory to develop an optimal guidance law for the atmospheric portion.
