LAURA Users Manual: 5.7

This users manual provides in-depth information concerning installation and execution of Laura, version 5. Laura is a structured, multi-block, compu- tational aerothermodynamic simulation code. Version 5 represents a major refactoring of the original Fortran 77 Laura code toward a modular structure afforded by Fortran 2003. The refactoring improved usability and maintain- ability by eliminating the requirement for problem-dependent re-compilations, providing more intuitive distribution of functionality, and simplifying inter- faces required for multi-physics coupling. As a result, Laura now shares gas-physics modules, MPI modules, and other low-level modules with the Fun3D unstructured-grid code. In addition to internal refactoring, several new features and capabilities have been added, e.g., a GNU-standard instal- lation process, parallel load balancing, automatic trajectory point sequencing, free-energy minimization, and coupled ablation and flowfield radiation.

FUN3D Manual: 14.1

This manual describes the installation and execution of FUN3D version 14.1, including optional dependent packages. FUN3D is a suite of computational fluid dynamics simulation and design tools that uses mixed-element unstructured grids in a large number of formats, including structured multiblock and overset grid systems. A discretely-exact adjoint solver may be used for formal design optimization, error estimation, and mesh adaptation. FUN3D also offers a reacting, real-gas capability and provides GPU acceleration of many common simulation options.

LAURA Users Manual: 5.6

This users manual provides in-depth information concerning installation and execution of Laura, version 5. Laura is a structured, multiblock, computational aerothermodynamic simulation code. Version 5 represents a major refactoring of the original Fortran 77 Laura code toward a modular structure afforded by Fortran 95. The refactoring improved usability and maintainability by eliminating the requirement for problem-dependent recompilations, providing more intuitive distribution of functionality, and simplifying inter- faces required for multi-physics coupling. As a result, Laura now shares gas-physics modules, MPI modules, and other low-level modules with the Fun3D unstructured-grid code. FUN3D Manual: 13.6

This manual describes the installation and execution of FUN3D version 13.6, including optional dependent packages. FUN3D is a suite of computational fluid dynamics simulation and design tools that uses mixed-element unstructured grids in a large number of formats, including structured multiblock and overset grid systems. A discretely-exact adjoint solver enables efficient gradient-based design and grid adaptation to reduce estimated discretization error. FUN3D is available with and without a reacting, real-gas capability. This generic gas option is available only for those persons that qualify for its beta release status.

Observations on CFD Verification and Validation from the AIAA Drag Prediction Workshops

The authors provide observations from the AIAA Drag Prediction Workshops that have spanned over a decade and from a recent validation experiment at NASA Langley. These workshops provide an assessment of the predictive capability of forces and moments, focused on drag, for transonic transports. It is very difficult to manage the consistency of results in a workshop setting to perform verification and validation at the scientific level, but it may be sufficient to assess it at the level of practice. Observations thus far: 1) due to simplifications in the workshop test cases, wind tunnel data are not necessarily the “correct” results that CFD should match, 2) an average of core CFD data are not necessarily a better estimate of the true solution as it is merely an average of other solutions and has many coupled sources of variation, 3) outlier solutions should be investigated and understood, and 4) the DPW series does not have the systematic build up and definition on both the computational and experimental side that is required for detailed verification and validation. Several observations regarding the importance of the grid, effects of physical modeling, benefits of open forums, and guidance for validation experiments are discussed. The increased variation in results when predicting regions of flow separation and increased variation due to interaction effects, e.g., fuselage and horizontal tail, point out the need for validation data sets for these important flow phenomena. Experiences with a recent validation experiment at NASA Langley are included to provide guidance on validation experiments.

Evaluation of CFD for Simulation of High-Supersonic Control Surface Effectiveness

This is the set of slides describing the CFD and wind-tunnel test studying the control surfaces of the CobraMRV concept for entry, descent, and landing on Mars. Difference between the CFD and wind-tunnel results are highlighted with the intent of showing whether CFD can replace wind-tunnel testing in the high supersonic flight regime.

A New Flow-Through Wind Tunnel Balance for Retropropulsion Testing

Supersonic retropropulsion is believed to be an enabling technology for large-scale human Mars lander vehicle concepts. Ground testing of such vehicles requires the development of new flow-through wind tunnel balances because no suitable balances exist. A new flow-through balance is designed that employs membranes in place of bellows, which have historically been used, and that passes the flow through load bearing parts of the balance. Flow through the balance is optimized via the addition of flow guides, which are manufactured as separate parts, and attached to the balance. Calibration of this new flow-through balance demonstrates that it can suitably characterize the load and pressure ranges it was designed for, which provides aero researchers a new tool to directly measure supersonic retropropulsion performance of powered descent vehicles.

Space Needle Returns

STEP is imported into Engineering Sketch Pad. Some bodies where slightly scaled and translated in OpenCSM to create a manifold solid for the downstream meshing process. The braces at the base and columns around the core are omitted because their solids are malformed or created nonmanifold intersections. EGADS provides an initial tessellation of the surface. refine adapted the surface mesh to a curvature and feature size metric. TetGen initially filled the volume. The TetGen mesh is adapted to the Spalding Law of the Wall u+ with refine to provide the initial mesh for flow solution. Solution-based mesh adaptation is performed where FUN3D-FV computes the flow solution with the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations coupled to the Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model. The freestream Mach number is 4 approaching 40° from the central axis of the Space Needle. The volume and surface mesh is adapted with refine to reduce estimated interpolation error in Mach number via the multiscale metric. The adapted mesh implicitly resolves the boundary layers, shocks, and expansions. The surface mesh is shown for the lee side with a slice through the volume on the left. Computational schlieren in the lower right shows density variations. A slice of the mesh is colored with Mach number in the upper right where mesh with freestream Mach number is not rendered. The volume mesh contains 64 million vertices. A NASA worm logo is sketched and extruded into a solid in OpenCSM. The worm is unioned to the Space Needle roof to produce the inset mesh image.
