Atomic parameters for carbon-like S XI

Calculations of radiative rates and collision strengths of S XI for 46 levels of the six configurations 2s2 2p2, 2s 2p3, 2p4, 2s2 2p 3s, 2s2 2p 3p, and 2s2 2p 3d are presented concurrently so that all the atomic data are self-consistent. Collision strengths are calculated at an incident electron energy of 25 Rydbergs above the ground level 2p2(3P0) in order to include collisional excitation to the highest level considered. Good agreement with previous results is found, and it is suggested that the given electric dipole rates are accurate to within at least 20 percent.

Laboratory study of the spectrum of highly ionized calcium in the 100-250 A range applied to solar flare diagnostics

Calcium was introduced into the TEXT tokamak, and its spectral emission was recorded in the 50-360 A range by an absolutely calibrated grazing incidence spectrometer. These observations of highly ionized species of calcium at known conditions of plasma electron temperature and density allow testing of line brightness ratio predictions based on theoretical values of temperature-dependent electron excitation rates. The confirmation of the expected ratios in Be I-like to O I-like calcium allows more confident use of these ratios as a density diagnostic of remote astrophysical sources such as solar flares.

Three-body Coulomb bound states

The binding energies of three-particle systems containing two electrons and one positive particle of mass M are reexamined in an attempt to understand the approximate proportionality of the 1Se ground-state binding energies of the reduced masses, as pointed out by Botero and Green (1986). The contribution to the energy of the mass-polarization term is evaluated. No fundamental principle is involved, since the mass polarization merely decreases somewhat as the mass of the positive particle is reduced below the proton mass. In the case of the excited 3Pe state, this reduction is not sufficient to allow binding when M approaches the electron mass. Some properties of the recently observed negative muonium ion (e/-/ mu/+/ e/-/) are also computed.

A comparison of the C III, O V, F VI, and Ne VII Delta n = 0 (2-2) line emissions from a laboratory plasma with theoretical predictions and astrophysical observations

Spectra of the Delta n = 0 (2-2) transitions of Be I-like ions, C III, O V, F VI, and Ne VII emitted from the TEXT tokamak, were measured with photometrically calibrated instrumentation and compared to the predictions of several models which differ in their treatment of electron impact excitation, using either the distorted wave or R-matrix approach. It was found that the ions from C III to Ne VII were located near the edge of the plasma, at densities between 10 to the 12th and 13th/cu cm. The experimental line ratios were compared with several sets of computations. Agreement is obtained between the experimental data and computations by using the R-matrix technique. This leads to the conclusion that the effect resonances must be included in collision strength calculations, particularly at low nuclear charge. The results show that the line ratios studied may be used with confidence as electron density diagnostics for laboratory or astrophysical plasmas.

Projection-operator calculations of the lowest e(-)-He resonance

The 1s (2s)2:2S Schulz resonance of He(-) is investigated theoretically, applying the full projection-operator formalism developed by Temkin and Bhatia (1985) in a Rayleigh-Ritz variational calculation. The technique is described in detail, and results for five different approximations of the He target state are presented in a table. Good convergence is obtained, but it is found that even the best calculated value of the resonance is about 130 meV higher than the experimentally measured value of 19.367 + or - 0.007 eV (Brunt et al., 1977), a discrepancy attributed to the contribution of the shift in the Feshbach formalism.

Electron collisional excitation and resonant photoexcitation of solar S XI

The line emission of carbon-like S XI is predicted using a comprehensive 46-level model including the configurations 2p2, 2s2p3, 2p3s, 2p4, 2p3p, 2p3d. Relative intensities of allowed, intercombination, and forbidden lines are computed for quiet and active solar conditions. The process of photoexcitation by the Fe XIII 191.26 A line is included to study its effect on EUV lines and the infrared forbidden lines at 1.92 and 1.39 microns. It is concluded that an observation of the 1.92-micron line by Olsen, Anderson, and Stewart (1971) is consistent with quiet solar conditions in the absence of photoexcitation.

A new dispersion relation for electron-atom scattering

A new forward-angle dispersion relation (DR) for electron-atom scattering is proposed. It is based on a subtraction of the static-exchange amplitude from the exact elastic scattering amplitude. Arguments are advanced to explain why this should obviate the difficulties associated with the Gerjuoy-Krall DR, specifically with the exchange Born amplitude. The new DR is tested in the elastic energy range for e-H scattering and compared with the GKDR.

The extreme-ultraviolet spectrum (300-630 A) of an erupting prominence observed from Skylab

The Skylab 300-630 A images of the January 17, 1974 eruptive spray event imply that the energy input to the arch was maintained during the first 22 min, accompanied by upward motion and heating. From the spectrum obtained, thermal properties are derived for the brightest portion of the nearly straightened leg of the arch. Wavelengths, identifications and intensities are presented for about 90 emission lines formed at temperatures between 100,000 and 1,000,000 K. The emission measure plot obtained is similar to those plots observed for the quiet sun.

3s-3p laser gain and X-ray line ratios for the carbon isoelectronic sequence

Calculations have been conducted for the 46 levels belonging to six different configurations in the C I isoatomic sequence, for atomic numbers 18, 22, 26, 30, 34, and 36, with electron densities in the 10 to the 15th to 10 to the 22nd/cu cm range. The 2s2 2p 3p levels' large populations are due to the large electron collisional monopole excitation rates from the ground configuration, as well as to the small radiative decay rates to the ground configuration; this leads to population inversions for transitions of the 3s-3p type. Attention is given to the density-dependence of X-ray line ratios, which represent a promising diagnostic for electron density.

Further atomic calculations for Fe XXIII

Electron collision strengths for Fe XXIII have been obtained using the 'distorted wave' approximation. Previous results (Bhatia and Mason, 1981) were obtained including the configurations 2s(2), 2s2p, 2p(2), 2s3s, 2s3p, and 2s3d. In this paper, the correlation configurations 2p3s, 2p3p and 2p3d have also been included in the solution of the electron scattering problem.

Theoretical intensity ratios for the X-ray lines from Ca XV

Electron collision strengths for Ca XV have been obtained using the 'distorted wave' approximation. Previous results (Mason, 1975; Dere et al., 1979) were obtained for the configurations 2s(2)2p(2), 2s2P(3), 2p(4). This paper presents results for transitions 2s(2)2p(2)-2s(2)2p3s, 2s(2)2p3d which give rise to lines in the X-ray spectra of solar active regions and flares.

The statistical equilibrium of hydrogen and helium in a radiation field, with an application to interpreting Wolf-Rayet spectra

The interpretation of the intensities of the hydrogen and helium emission lines in O and Wolf-Rayet spectra in terms of the abundance of hydrogen relative to helium requires information regarding the distribution of hydrogen and helium atoms and ions over their several energy states. In addition, some estimate is needed regarding the transmission of the radiation through the stellar mantle. The present paper provides new information concerning the population of the energy levels of hydrogen and helium when statistical equilibrium occurs in the presence of a radiation field. The results are applied to an interpretation of the spectra of four Wolf-Rayet stars, taking into account the implications for interpreting the spectra of O stars, OB supergiants, and Be stars.

Density sensitive X-ray line ratios in the Be I, B I, and Ne I isoelectronic sequences

The intensities of X-ray transitions in highly charged ions in the Be I, B I, and Ne I isoelectronic sequences have been calculated as functions of electron density. The intensities of the transitions from the 2s(n)2p(m)3p configuration, relative to the intensities from the 2s(n)2p(m)3s and 2s(n)p(m)3d configurations, are strong functions of electron density in high-density plasmas. The density sensitivity occurs at electron densities between 10 to the 16th/cu cm (for Si ions) and 10 to the 22nd/cu cm (for Kr ions). Opacity is unimportant for plasma dimensions that are characteristic of dense laser-produced plasmas. These X-ray line ratios represent a promising new density diagnostic for high-density plasmas.

Photodetachment of the positronium negative ion

The photodetachment cross section of the negative positronium ion is calculated. The description of the initial bound state is simplified by representing it by an asymptotic form whose normalization comes from the most accurate Hylleraas wave function of the ion. The final state is assumed to be a plane wave.

Short wavelength laser calculations for electron pumping in Be I and B I isoelectronic sequences (Z greater than or equal to 18 and less than or equal to 36)

There has been considerable interest in creating large laser gains in the X-ray region from atomic transitions in ne-like ions formed in high-temperature plasmas. Although the Ne-like ions habe received the most attention, it is also possible to produce population inversions in ions of other isoelectronic sequences. Accordingly, it is shown that certain levels of the 2s3p and 2s(2)3p configurations in the Be I and B I isoelectronic sequences can be inverted by collisional pumping relative to levels of the 2s3s and 2s(2)3s configurations. Level populations and gain coefficients were calculated for the most promising transitions, and opacities were calculated for 2s2p-2s3s and 2s(2)2p-2s(2)3s transitions.

Expected intensities of solar neon-like ions

A study of the expected intensities of the stronger solar neon-like ion emission lines, some not yet observed, is carried out to compare with the observational situation. The potential usefulness of the 2p5 3s(3P2) - 2p6 forbidden line as a density diagnostic is discussed, and new electric quadrupole lines in the soft X-ray range are noted. 'Observability diagrams' are presented as a convenient overview of the known and unobserved lines. The S VII resonance lines appear to have anomalous intensities.
