Solar coronal Ar/Fe and Ne/Mg abundance ratios derived from ultraviolet forbidden line spectra

An Ar/Fe abundance ratio of 0.031 + or - 35 percent and an upper limit of 0.4 to the Ne/Mg abundance ratio are determined for solar coronal active regions using solar spectra. Forbidden lines occur at 1324.45 A for Mg V, 1349.38 A for Fe XII, 1375.98 A for Ca XV, and 1392.12 A for Ar XI. The unobserved Ne V line is predicted to fall at 1574.68 A. These abundance ratios are consistent with lower abundances of Ne and Ar in the corona relative to low first ionization potential elements.

The Fe XI-excited fluorescent cascade in Ne IV

A theoretical spectroscopic investigation of the fluorescent cascade to be expected in nitrogen-like Ne IV, when it is resonantly photoexcited by Fe XI in the solar atmosphere, symbiotic stars, or novae, is described. Primary and secondary cascade intensities are obtained as functions of photoexcitation rate, and expected absolute intensities in the solar atmosphere are derived on the basis of observed Fe XI and Ne EUV emission. Comparisons between the spatially resolved solar situation and spatially unresolved stellar cases of cataclysmic variables, in which these ions have been found to coexist, are made. An interesting possibility of periodic time-dependent fluorescence exists for the binary cataclysmics.

Can a Penning ionization discharge simulate the tokamak scrape-off plasma conditions?

The tokamak scrape-off (the region between the vacuum vessel wall and the magnetically confined fusion plasma edge), represents a source/sink for the hot fusion plasma. The electron densities and temperatures are in the ranges 10 to the 11th - 10 to the 13th/cu cm and 1-40 eV, respectively (depending on the size, magnetic field intensity and configuration, plasma current, etc). In the work reported, the electron temperature and density have been estimated in a Penning ionization discharge by comparing its spectroscopic emission in the VUV with that predicted by a collisional radiative model. An attempt to directly compare this emission with that of the tokamak edge is briefly described.

Search for resonances in positron-atom systems

No one likes to see a scattering cross section curve that is too smooth; it is much more interesting to find bumps and wiggles and most interesting if it is possible to understand their cause. Several types of resonances were clearly established in positron-containing systems: those lying just below a degenerate threshold (like 2s-2p in hydrogenic atoms or ions) and those representing Coulomb bound states in a rearranged channel (like Ps + H reversing positron +H(-)). Recently, two new sorts of resonances have been reported for which the resonant mechanism is not clear. The first is a very low lying resonance in the e-Ps system (obtained by an adiabatic expansion method), and the second is a similarly low lying two channel resonance in the positron -H system (obtained by a close-coupling technique.) These developments encouraged the examination of such systems using the standard methods of stabilization and complex rotation. Most of the results are negative; the low lying resonances in either system are verified. Some indication of new resonances in the e(+)-He(+) system is found; this may be caused by the attraction between Ps in the n=2 state and the He(++) nucleus.

Complex-coordinate calculation of 1D(e) resonances using Hylleraas functions

The lowest 1D(e) resonances below the n = 2 and n = 3 thresholds are calculated using a method of complex-coordinate rotation. The results, obtained with the use of Hylleraas functions, are believed to be of high accuracy. This work should serve as a useful reference for other investigations.

The optically thick O III spectrum. I - Diagnostic ratios involving the intercombination lines

An escape-probability calculation of the optically thick O III spectrum is carried out to obtain the optical depth dependence of the intercombination doublet at 1663 A and of resonance lines between the 2p2, 2s2p3, and 2p4 configurations. The effect of optical depth on diagnostic ratios involving the intercombination lines is quantitatively established. The general question raised is whether such effects may occur in actual sources.

Neonlike Ar and Cl 3p-3s emission from a theta-pinch plasma

Time-resolved extreme-UV emission from sixteen 3p-3s transitions, some of the type in which lasing has been demonstrated in heavier elements, is measured for neonlike Ar(8+) and Cl(7+). These observations are made on a hydrogen theta-pinch plasma with a 5 pct admixture of argon or freon (for Cl). Fourteen 3d-3p spectral lines are also detected. The measured intensities are compared to theoretical predictions. There is no evidence of anomalously intense lines originating on 2p5 3p J = 2 upper levels compared to J = 0, as observed in gain experiments.

Laser gain on 3p-3d and 3s-3p transitions and X-ray line ratios for the nitrogen isoelectronic sequence

Results are presented on calculations of the 72 levels belonging to the 2s(2)2p(3), 2s2p(4), 2p(5), 2s(2)2p(2)3s, 2s(2)2p(2)3p, and 2s(2)2p(2)3d configurations of the N I isoelectronic sequence for the ions Ar XII, Ti XVI, Fe XX, Zn XXIV, and Kr XXX, for electron densities up to 10 to the 24th/cu cm. It was found that large population inversions and gain occur between levels in the 2s(2)2p(2)3p configuration and levels in the 2s(2)2p(2)3d configuration that cannot decay to the ground configuration by an electric dipole transition. For increasing electron densities, the intensities of the X-ray transitions from the 2s(2)2p(2)3p configuration to the ground configuration decrease relative to the transitions from the 2s(2)2p(2)3s and 2s(2)2p(2)3d configurations to the ground configuration. The density dependence of these X-ray line ratios is presented.

A comparison of theoretical and solar-flare intensity ratios for the Fe XIX X-ray lines

Atomic data including energy levels, gf-values, and wavelengths are given for the Fe XIX transitions that give rise to lines in solar-flare and active-region X-ray spectra. Collision strengths and theoretical intensity ratios are presented for lines which occur in the 13.2-14.3-A range. Observed spectra are found to be consistent with those derived from the present Fe XIX atomic data. For the case of spectra in which the Fe XIX lines are very strong, such as those at the maxima of hot flares, two observed line features due to Fe XIX are shown to have larger intensities than calculated. The calculated Fe XIX and Ne IX line spectra are used to determine electron densities from Ne IX line ratios.

On the populating mechanisms of the autoionising states of Al III ions produced in a Penning ionisation discharge

Spectra emitted by Al II and Al III in the 100-1900-A range from a Penning ionization discharge (PID) have been analyzed in order to study the populating mechanisms of the autoionizing levels of the Al III ion. Electron temperature and density estimates and Al III line intensities obtained using a collisional-radiative model are found to differ from those obtained experimentally, implying that the autoionizing levels of the Na I-like ion may be populated, in the PID plasma, by the inner-shell ionization of excited Mg I-like ions. It is suggested that such autoionizing lines could be used to search for populations inversions in the soft X-ray domain.

Anomalously high intercombination line ratios in symbiotic stars - Extreme Bowen pumping?

International Ultraviolet Explorer observations of the ratio of the O III intercombination lines near 1660 A are assembled, showing that the observed ratios in symbiotic stars are significantly higher than the theoretically predicted optically thin limit of 2.5. The presence of an enhancing physical process is thereby indicated. It is suggested that Bowen pumping of the lower level of the 1666.2 A line in an 'external saturation' limit, coupled with appreciable optical depth, could logically explain the high ratios. Some tentative evidence for this is presented and the relevance of far-infrared observations of the O III 51.8 and 88.3 micron lines in symbiotic sources is emphasized.

Deexcitation of muonic molecules by internal conversion

Deexcitation rates, lifetimes, and branching ratios are calculated for all the J = 0, J = 1, and J = 2 bound states of the muonic molecular ion td(mu) when it serves as the nucleus of a hydrogen atom. The J = 2 binding energy (E2 = 101.59 eV) is the first reported variational result for this state. It is found that the excited J = 0 state is populated several hundred times as often as the ground state.

Multilevel calculation of the Ne IV solar spectrum

A calculation of the atomic parameters of the seven-electron ion Ne IV yields radiative rates A(ki) and distorted-wave collision strengths Omega (ki) between 72 levels of the six configurations 2s2 2p3, 2s2p4, 2p5, 2p2 3s, 2p2 3p, and 2p2 3d. These are used to obtain expected line intensities for quiet, active, and flare solar conditions. Comparisons are made with available solar observations. Good agreement is found, including observed density-sensitivity in the case of the multiplet at 469.8 A. The atomic radiative rates are separately compared with laboratory beam-foil measurements and are shown to be in reasonable agreement with the latter.

Spatial probing of nebular properties via Bowen pumping

On the basis of detailed calculations of O III line intensities under optically thin and optically thick conditions, an analysis is proposed for spatially resolved observations of the Bowen lines which could yield the local photoexcitation rate and an estimate of the local optical depth, more specifically the local mean escape probability associated with the line of sight. The importance of such newly defined escape probabilities is emphasized. An illustrative application is made to the data of Barker for the planetary nebula NGC 6720. The far-infrared line ratio I (88 microns)/I(52 microns) is also sensitive to Bowen pumping at low optical depths, and interpretation of the ratio may need to take this effect into account in some H II regions. It is noted that the S III far-infrared line ratio could provide an independent check on whether the effect is present.

Polarization asymmetry in two-electron photodetachment - A cogent test of the ionization threshold law

A very sensitive test of the electron-atom ionization threshold law is suggested: for spin-aligned heavy negative ions it consists of measuring the polarization asymmetry A(PA) coming from double detachment by left- versus right-circularly polarized light. The respective yields are worked out for the Te(-) (5p)5 2P(3/2) ion. The Coulomb-dipole theory predicts A(PA) to be the ratio of two oscillating functions in sharp contrast to any power law (specifically that of Wannier, 1953) for which the ratio is expected to be a smooth function of energy.

Carbon and nitrogen lines in the spectra of Wolf-Rayet stars

The one-representative-point radiative transfer theory of Castor and van Blerkom (1970) is used to predict the relative energies in emission lines of the ions of carbon and nitrogen in Wolf-Rayet atmospheres for a wide range of parameters. The predicted ratios are compared with observed relative energies of lines in the visible and ultraviolet spectral ranges of six Wolf-Rayet stars. It is found that the lower levels of C II, C III, N III, and N IV are strongly overpopulated relative to their populations in LTE. The differences between WC and WN spectra appear to be due chiefly to a difference in electron temperature in the line-emitting regions. The typical volume of stars studied is estimated to be in the range of 10 to the 41st to 10 to the 44th cu cm. Possible ways in which the line-emitting regions may be arranged around the star are discussed, noting that the high-temperature line-emitting plasma may lie in a thin annular disk approximately 10 to the 15th cm from the star.

Further study of a new dispersion relation for electron-atom scattering

A recently proposed dispersion relation (DR) is tested for e-He scattering; the results show that the new DR is not satisfied. Therefore, the analytic structure of the difference amplitude, previously assumed to be nonsingular, is investigated on the negative scattering energy axis. Even under severe approximations, the difference amplitude contains both poles and branch points. This suggests, however, a useful approximation of these contributions to the DR which gives very satisfactory agreement in both e-H and e-He scattering.

Discrete fluorescent saturation regimes in multilevel systems

Using models of multilevel atoms, the fluorescent process was examined for the ratio of the photooxidation rate, Pij, to the collisional oxidation rate, Cij, in the pumped resonance transition i-j. It is shown that, in the full range of the parameter Pij/Cij, there exist three distinct regimes (I, II, and III) which may be usefully exploited. These regimes are defined, respectively, by the following conditions: Pij/Cij smaller than about 1; Pij/Cij much greater than 1 and Pij much lower than Cki; and Pij/Cij much greater than 1 and Pij much higher than Cki, where Cki is the collisional rate populating the source level i. The only regime which is characterized by the sensitivity of fluorescent-fluorescent line intensity ratios to Pij is regime I. If regime III is reached, even fluorescent-nonfluorescent line ratios become independent of Pij. The analysis is applied to the resonant photoexcitation of a carbonlike ion.
