A New Approach to Structural Failure Detection Based on Adaptive Lattice Filtering

A new approach to structural failure detection and localization is introduced based on acoustic reflections. It is shown that the cross-sectional areas of structural elements can be computed directly in terms of the reflection coefficients of an optimal finite impulse response Wiener filter realized in lattice form.

Noncolocated Structural Vibration Suppression Using Zero Annihilation Periodic Control

The Zero Annihilation Periodic (ZAP) controller is applied to the problem of vibration control of a noncolocated flexible structure. It is shown that even though the transfer function is nonminimum-phase, a plant inverse controller can be designed which elicits a deadbeat closed-loop response.

Multivariable State-Space Identification in the Delta and Shift Operators

This paper develops algorithms for multivariable state-space identification which can be used to estimate models in any operator of interest i.e., delta-rule, shift, Laplace s, etc. The approach is based on the State-Space from Frequency Data (SSFD) algorithm which was designed specifically to eliminate distortions from windowing effects.

Lyapunov function-based control laws for revolute robot arms - Tracking control, robustness, and adaptive control

A new class of joint level control laws for all-revolute robot arms is introduced. The analysis is similar to a recently proposed energy-like Liapunov function approach, except that the closed-loop potential function is shaped in accordance with the underlying joint space topology. This approach gives way to a much simpler analysis and leads to a new class of control designs which guarantee both global asymptotic stability and local exponential stability. When Coulomb and viscous friction and parameter uncertainty are present as model perturbations, a sliding mode-like modification of the control law results in a robustness-enhancing outer loop. Adaptive control is formulated within the same framework. A linear-in-the-parameters formulation is adopted and globally asymptotically stable adaptive control laws are derived by simply replacing unknown model parameters by their estimates (i.e., certainty equivalence adaptation).

Multivariable frequency domain identification via 2-norm minimization

The author develops a computational approach to multivariable frequency domain identification, based on 2-norm minimization. In particular, a Gauss-Newton (GN) iteration is developed to minimize the 2-norm of the error between frequency domain data and a matrix fraction transfer function estimate. To improve the global performance of the optimization algorithm, the GN iteration is initialized using the solution to a particular sequentially reweighted least squares problem, denoted as the SK iteration. The least squares problems which arise from both the SK and GN iterations are shown to involve sparse matrices with identical block structure. A sparse matrix QR factorization method is developed to exploit the special block structure, and to efficiently compute the least squares solution. A numerical example involving the identification of a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) plant having 286 unknown parameters is given to illustrate the effectiveness of the algorithm.

Adaptive Control Of Large Vibrating, Rotating Structures

Globally convergent theoretical method provides for adaptive set-point control of orientation of, along with suppression of the vibrations of, large structure. Method utilizes inherent passivity properties of structure to attain mathematical condition essential to adaptive convergence on commanded set point. Maintains stability and convergence in presence of errors in mathematical model of dynamics of structure and actuators. Developed for controlling attitudes of large, somewhat flexible spacecraft, also useful in such terrestrial applications as controlling movable bridges or suppressing earthquake vibrations in bridges, buildings, and other large structures.

Adaptive noncolocated velocity feedback for vibration damping

A method is proposed for adaptive noncolocated velocity feedback control of flexible structure vibrations. The approach, denoted as auto-tuning, is to drive the system into a sequence of controlled oscillations to provide accurate knowledge of the plant characteristics in the vicinity of the phase cross-over frequencies. An allpass phase notch filter cascade is used as the control architecture to phase stabilize each destabilizing mode in the plant transfer function. The allpass phase notch filter cascade is tuned precisely by the information extracted from the controlled oscillations.
