Analysis of solar X-ray emission line profiles

The high spatial and spectral resolution solar X-ray observations of an active region in which an X-ray and radio gradual rise and fall was in progress are reported. The correlations of highly collimated X-ray scans with the magnetic data indicate the presence of a hot localized region of X-ray emission near the end of the magnetic neutral line. A thermal interpretation of the continuum observed from this region is consistent with an emission temperature of 3 x 10 to the 48th/cu cm and an electron temperature of 10 to the 7th K. A model of the temperature distribution of the X-ray emitting material within the collimator field of view is derived using the resonance lines of Ne X, Ne IX, and Fe XVII. Most of the emission measure is at temperatures less than 2,000,000 K, but some high-temperature material with an electron temperature between 5,000,000 K and 7,000,000 K is required.

K-shell photoabsorption coefficients of O2, CO2, CO, and N2O

The total photoabsorption coefficient has been measured from 500 to 600 eV around the K edge of oxygen in gases O2, CO2, CO, and N2O by means of a gold continuum source and crystal spectrometer with better than 1-eV resolution. The cross sections are dominated by discrete molecular-orbital transitions below the K-edge energy. A few Rydberg transitions were barely detectable. Broad shape resonances appear at or above the K edge. Additional broad, weak features above the K edge possibly arise from shake up. Quantitative results are given that have about 10% accuracy except on the very strong peaks. All the measured features are discussed in relation to other related measurements and theory.

Diffraction effects on angular response of X-ray collimators

Angular responses have been measured for X-ray collimators with half-widths ranging from minutes of arc down to 10 arcsec. In the seconds-of-arc range, diffraction peaks at off-axis angles can masquerade as side lobes of the collimator angular response. Measurements and qualitative physical arguments lead to a rule of thumb for collimator design; namely, the angle of first minimum in the Fraunhofer single-slit diffraction pattern should be less than one-fourth of the collimator geometrical full-width at half-maximum intensity.

Collimators for soft X-ray measurements

The development of X-ray grid collimators at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory is considered with attention given to grid design (patterns and artwork for masters, materials, layout of grid patterns), mounting techniques (index housings, L-bar and T-bar housings, U-housings, rectangular housings). Alignment techniques (adjustable frames and alignment telescope, adjustable frames and on-axis and off-axis telescopes) are considered along with test procedures (plane parallel X-ray beam, convolved response).

Spectrometric properties of crystals for X-ray astronomy. I

Preliminary results are reported on measurements of X-ray reflection coefficients, rocking-curve width estimates, and factors that influence these for KAP, EDDT, and ADP crystals. The agreement between parameters measured in the authors' laboratory and others over a period of some ten years, and the uniformity among the authors' samples, indicate that KAP as commercially supplied is amenable to a single theoretical description. This permits application of X-ray diffraction theory, which outlined and compared to measurements with good agreement.
