Approximate method for calculating transonic flow about lifting wing-body configurations

The three-dimensional problem of transonic flow about lifting wing-body configurations is reduced to a two-variable computational problem with the method of matched asymptotic expansions. The computational problem is solved with the method of relaxation. The method accounts for leading-edge separation, the presence of shock waves, and the presence of solid, slotted, or porous tunnel walls. The Mach number range of the method extends from zero to the supersonic value at which the wing leading edge becomes sonic. A modified form of the transonic area rule which accounts for the effect of lift is developed. This effect is explained from simple physical considerations.

Improvements in the slotted-wall boundary condition

It is shown that the form of the slotted wind tunnel wall boundary condition can be obtained directly from the ideal slot conditions without specification of the cross-sectional geometry of the slot. The treatment of flat slots is generalized so that configurations with sidewalls in the plenum can be treated. It is shown that these variations do not change the slotted-wall boundary condition significantly. It is concluded that the effects of slot sidewalls and separation in the plenum on the coefficient of the slotted-wall boundary condition are small compared to the effect of the slat on the tunnel side.

Approximate method for calculating transonic flow about lifting wing-body configurations: Computer program and user's manual

A user's manual is presented for a computer program which calculates inviscid flow about lifting configurations in the free-stream Mach-number range from zero to low supersonic. Angles of attack of the order of the configuration thickness-length ratio and less can be calculated. An approximate formulation was used which accounts for shock waves, leading-edge separation and wind-tunnel wall effects.

Analysis of transonic flow about lifting wing-body configurations

An analytical solution was obtained for the perturbation velocity potential for transonic flow about lifting wing-body configurations with order-one span-length ratios and small reduced-span-length ratios and equivalent-thickness-length ratios. The analysis is performed with the method of matched asymptotic expansions. The angles of attack which are considered are small but are large enough to insure that the effects of lift in the region far from the configuration are either dominant or comparable with the effects of thickness. The modification to the equivalence rule which accounts for these lift effects is determined. An analysis of transonic flow about lifting wings with large aspect ratios is also presented.

Transonic flow about lifting wing-body combinations

Calculations for transonic flow about wing-body combinations at angles of attack of the order of the body thickness-to-length ratio are presented. These calculations show that lift can alter the flow drastically at near-sonic speeds in this angle-of-attack range so that the area rule must be modified. This effect of lift is explained from simple physical considerations. The computational procedure is based on slender-wing theory and a two-variable method of relaxation solution. A small perturbation analysis is used to show that this simple procedure is adequate for these transonic wing-body flow fields.

Transonic flow about lifting configurations.

A transonic flow solution is presented for configurations with span-to-length ratios of order one. The angles of attack are sufficiently large to produce lift effects that are either dominant or comparable to the thickness effects. The analysis is performed with the aid of the method of matched asymptotic expansions. The results obtained are compared with data reported by Cheng and Hafez (1972).
