Uniaxial Néel vector control in perovskite oxide thin films by anisotropic strain engineering

Antiferromagnetic (AF) thin films typically exhibit a multidomain state, and control of the AF Néel vector is challenging, as AF materials are robust to magnetic perturbations. In this paper, uniaxial Néel vector control is demonstrated by relying on anisotropic strain engineering of epitaxial thin films of the prototypical AF material LaFeO 3 (LFO). Orthorhombic (011)- and (101)-oriented DyScO 3 , GdScO 3 , and NdGaO 3 substrates are used to engineer different anisotropic in-plane strain states. The anisotropic in-plane strain stabilizes structurally monodomain monoclinic LFO thin films. The uniaxial Néel vector is found along the tensile strained b axis, contrary to bulk LFO having the Néel vector along the shorter a axis, and no magnetic domains are found. Hence, anisotropic strain engineering is a viable tool for designing unique functional responses, further enabling AF materials for mesoscopic device technology.

Topological surface magnetism and Néel vector control in a magnetoelectric antiferromagnet

Antiferromagnetic states with no stray magnetic fields can enable high-density ultra-fast spintronic technologies. However, the detection and control of antiferromagnetic Néel vectors remain challenging. Linear magnetoelectric antiferromagnets (LMAs) may provide new pathways, but applying simultaneous electric and magnetic fields, necessary to control Néel vectors in LMAs, is cumbersome and impractical for most applications. Herein, we show that Cr 2 O 3 , a prototypical room-temperature LMA, carries a topologically-protected surface magnetism in all surfaces, which stems from intrinsic surface electric fields due to band bending, combined with the bulk linear magnetoelectricity. Consequently, bulk Néel vectors with zero bulk magnetization can be simply tuned by magnetic fields through controlling the magnetizations associated with the surface magnetism. Our results imply that the surface magnetizations discovered in Cr 2 O 3 should be also present in all LMAs.

Autonomous Inverter Controls for Resilient and Secure Grid Operation: Vector Control Design for Grid Forming

The project addresses both fundamental and practical challenges of GFM/GFL inverter control for the power grids with high inverter based resources (IBRs) penetration. A data- driven modeling technique is applied to accurately model dynamics of PWM inverters, including electromagnetic-transient (EMT). Systematic and integrative designs of grid- forming (GFM) and grid-following (GFL) primary controls are developed to guarantee system performance under either normal or abnormal operating conditions without violating constraints. This modeling and control framework provides black-start capability in case of an outage without relying on rotating generators, and its secondary control is also shown to enhance resilience against cyber-physical attacks.

A Novel State-Constrained Primary Control for Grid-Forming Inverters

The problem of operating an AC microgrid with purely inverter-based generating units is considered, and a novel vector control for the constrained grid-forming (GFM) inverters is proposed. The design aims to achieve the primary control objectives of the GFM inverters: voltage establishment, synchronization, and voltage/frequency regulation. It is novel that the proposed control also ensures all operational variables constrained both real-time and for all the time except for low voltage during the period of grid forming. The constraints include frequency, output AC voltage, input DC power, and active/reactive power injections to the grid. Here, in this paper, outcomes of a detailed simulation are presented to demonstrated that the above design objectives are met and that the overall performance is superior due to its unique ability of simultaneously controlling the whole vectors of the inverter state and output.

Bacteria-mediated dsRNA delivery for mosquito-borne virus control

Mosquito-borne viruses represent an increasing global public health threat, exacerbated by urbanisation and climate change, thus making effective mosquito control essential. RNA interference (RNAi), a sequence-specific gene regulation mechanism, can be a flexible vector control tool. RNAi effectors, such as double-stranded RNA (dsRNA), can target mosquito genes or the viruses they carry, disrupting development or suppressing infection. However, current RNAi delivery methods are ineffective. Engineered bacterial symbionts offer a promising alternative for delivery, as they can produce dsRNA directly within mosquitoes. However, bacterial RNAi delivery in mosquitoes remains underexplored. We review emerging genetic tools, insights from RNAi and bacteria–mosquito interactions to outline priorities for realising bacterial RNAi as an efficient and sustainable vector control strategy.

Accelerated Wind-Turbine Wake Recovery Through Actuation of the Tip-Vortex Instability

Advances in wind-plant control have often focused on more effectively balancing power between neighboring turbines. Wake steering is one such method that provides control-based improvements in a quasi-static way, but this does little to fundamentally change the wake recovery process, and thus, it has limited potential. This study investigates use of another control paradigm known as dynamic wake control (DWC) to excite the mutual inductance instability between adjacent tip-vortex structures, thereby accelerating the breakdown of the structures. The current work carries this approach beyond the hypothetical by applying the excitation via turbine control vectors that already exist on all modern wind turbines: blade pitch and rotor speed control. The investigation leverages a free-vortex wake method (FVWM) that allows a thorough exploration of relevant frequencies and amplitudes of harmonic forcing for each control vector (as well as the phase difference between the vectors for a tandem configuration) while still capturing the essential tip-vortex dynamics. The FVWM output feeds into a Fourier stability analysis working to pinpoint candidate DWC strategies suggesting fastest wake recovery. Near-wake length reductions of >80% are demonstrated, although without considering inflow turbulence. Analysis is provided to interpret these predictions considering the presence of turbulence in a real atmospheric inflow.

Controlling Magnetization Vector Depth Profiles of La 0.7 Sr 0.3 CoO 3 /La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 Exchange Spring Bilayers via Interface Reconstruction

The La 0.7 Sr 0.3 CoO 3–δ /La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3–δ (LSCO/LSMO) bilayer system is an ideal perovskite oxide platform for investigating interface reconstruction and its effect on their magnetic properties. Previous studies have shown that LSCO can separate into magnetic sublayers, which possess distinct trends as the total LSCO thickness increases. Here, we used polarized neutron reflectometry to quantify changes in the magnetic and chemical depth profiles, and it confirms the formation of ~12 Å-thick interfacial LSCO and LSMO layers, characterized by a decreased nuclear scattering length density compared to the bulk of the layers. This decrease is attributed to the combined effects of oxygen vacancy formation and interfacial charge transfer, which lead to magnetically active Co 2+ ions with ionic radii larger than the Co 3+ /Co 4+ ions typically found in bulk LSCO or single-layer films. The interfacial magnetization values, as well as Co 2+ ion and oxygen vacancy concentrations, depend strongly on the LSCO layer thickness. These results highlight the sensitive interplay of the cation valence states, oxygen vacancy concentration, and magnetization at interfaces in perovskite oxide multilayers, demonstrating the potential to tune their functional properties via careful design of their structure.

Field trials reveal the complexities of deploying and evaluating the impacts of yeast-baited ovitraps on Aedes mosquito densities in Trinidad, West Indies

The use of lure-and-kill, large-volume ovitraps to control Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus populations has shown promise across multiple designs that target gravid females (adulticidal) or larvae post-oviposition (larvicidal). Here we report on a pilot trial to deploy 10 L yeast-baited ovitraps at select sites in Curepe, Trinidad, West Indies during July to December, 2019. Oviposition rates among ovitraps placed in three Treatment sites were compared to a limited number of traps placed in three Control areas (no Aedes management performed), and three Vector areas (subjected to standard Ministry of Health, Insect Vector Control efforts). Our goal was to gain baseline information on efforts to saturate the Treatment sites with ovitraps within 20–25 m of each other and compare oviposition rates at these sites with background oviposition rates in Control and Vector Areas. Although yeast-baited ovitraps were highly attractive to gravid Aedes females, a primary limitation encountered within the Treatment sites was the inability to gain access to residential compounds for trap placement, primarily due to residents being absent during the day. This severely limited our intent to saturate these areas with ovitraps, indicating that future studies must include plans to account for these inaccessible zones during trap placement.

Dynamic Model of Active Front-End Converters with 2DOF-PI Controllers for DC Bus Voltage Control

In most of the research, a conventional one degree-of-freedom type proportional-integral controller (1DOF-PI) is used for the regulation of the dc bus voltage in an Active Front-End Converter (AFEC). This paper proposes a two degree-of-freedom type proportional-integral controller (2DOF-PI) for the regulation of dc bus voltage in an AFEC. Such a controller eliminates the left-half plane (LHP) zero in the command-to-output transfer function for dc bus voltage regulation that is inherent to the conventional 1DOF-PI for this application. The dynamic model of an AFEC in the synchronous reference frame (SRF) is presented. An inner current control and outer dc voltage control loop is built for controlling the AFEC. Vector-control scheme is employed to achieve decoupled control of direct-axis and quadrature-axis currents. The outer dc voltage control loop is designed with a 2DOF-PI to complete the control system. Transfer function (TF) of the controller is derived based on the presented model and used to calculate the controller gains. Transient and steady state performance of the designed controllers are investigated in MATLAB/Simulink and results presented.

Dynamic P-Q Capability and Abnormal Operation Analysis of a Wind Turbine with Doubly-Fed Induction Generator

After several accidents occurred in wind farms in the United States and around the world, the subsynchronous oscillation (SSO) issues in grid-connected wind farms have gained serious attention. Particularly, these issues have caused significant challenges to wind turbines with a doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) because it is connected to the grid via both its stator and rotor paths. Traditionally, a P-Q capability chart is utilized to assure the safe operation boundary for a synchronous generator. But the energy conversion characteristics of a DFIG wind turbine are completely different. A critical factor to affect the reliable operation of a DFIG wind turbine is the rated current and pulse-width modulation (PWM) saturation constraints of its power converters. These constraint conditions can be affected by the wind turbine rotating speed and grid conditions. However, a detailed study of DFIG P-Q capability from these perspectives has not been conducted, which has hindered adequate understanding of many abnormal wind turbine operations reported in the literature and the development of advanced control technologies to overcome the challenges. The proposed study in this paper considers vector control implementation to DFIG power electronic converters in the dq reference frame, and the models and algorithms developed for the P-Q capability study have addressed specific DFIG power converter constraints that are different from those of a traditional synchronous generator. The paper especially focuses on exploring the dynamic natures of DFIG P-Q capability under uncertain and variable conditions to explore the root causes of many abnormal operations of DFIG wind turbines reported in the literature. The proposed study is validated through an electromagnetic transient simulation model of a grid-connected DFIG wind turbine. The proposed study has the potential to lead to the development of new DFIG control technologies that can help overcome the challenges for many abnormal operations of DFIG wind turbines.

Robust Disturbance Rejection Rotor Current Control of Doubly-Fed Induction Generators

This article proposes a robust transient disturbance rejection current controller (TDRCC) to improve the transient performance of doubly-fed induction generators (DFIGs) in wind turbines during grid disturbances, such as short circuits. Here, the proposed robust TDRCC replaces the proportional-integral-derivative (PID) current controllers conventionally used in the vector control scheme of the DFIG rotor side converter (RSC). The TDRCC estimates the transient disturbances caused by grid faults or other external disturbances and provides compensation to the DFIG rotor voltage in the current control loops of the RSC to improve the robustness of the controller to disturbance. A sliding-mode current controller (SMCC) is also designed to highlight the transient performance improvement of the DFIG using the TDRCC over the state-of-the-art control methods during grid short circuit faults. Simulation studies are conducted in PSCAD/EMTDC for a 3.6-MW DFIG wind turbine with the proposed TDRCC, the conventional PI controller, and the SMCC, respectively during the most severe balanced three-phase grid short circuit fault specified by the U.S. grid code as well as an unbalance single-phase grid short circuit fault. Hardware experiments are conducted on a 200-W DFIG wind turbine emulator with the three different controllers for the same three-phase short circuit fault. Simulation and hardware experiment results show that the TDRCC reduces the peak rotor current significantly when compared with the PI and SMCC controlled DFIG system and, therefore, would help prolong the lifespan of the DFIG's power electronics and reduce maintenance costs.

The Eco-Bio-Social Factors That Modulate Aedes aegypti Abundance in South Texas Border Communities

Aedes aegypti control requires dedicated resources that are usually scarce, limiting the reach and sustainability of vector control programs. This generates a need to focus on areas at risk of disease transmission and also understand the factors that might modulate local mosquito abundance. We evaluated the eco-bio-social factors that modulate indoor and outdoor relative abundance of female Ae. aegypti in communities of South Texas. We conducted housing quality and Knowledge Attitudes and Practices surveys in households that were part of a weekly mosquito surveillance program in November of 2017 and 2018. Our results showed widespread knowledge of mosquitoes and Zika virus by our participants. However, less than 35% considered them as serious problems in this region. The presence of window-mounted air conditioning units increased the risk of female mosquito relative abundance indoors. An increase in outdoor relative abundance was associated with larger properties and a higher number of children between 6 to 17 years of age. Interestingly, we observed that an increasing number of children <5 years of age modulated both indoor and outdoor relative abundance, with a 52% increase indoors and 30% decrease outdoors. The low perception of mosquito and disease risk highlights engagement needs for vector-borne disease prevention in this region. The identified risk factors can help guide public health officials in their efforts to reduce human and vector contact.

Enabling Technology for Energy Sustainability: Power Electronic Converter Control for Renewables

To ensure high penetration of renewable energy sources into power grids, their interfacing inverters need to be designed to provide grid support functions. Important grid support functions include frequency and voltage support. To this end, the research community has recently invested heavily on grid-forming control pilot projects. Grid forming control aims to replace traditional grid following control, which is based on phase-locked loop and can achieve decoupled real and reactive power control. Here, in this article, we review the state-of-the-art grid following and forming technology and point out some deficiencies in dynamic performance in the widely adopted grid-forming control design. We also examine how to ensure that the vector control capable of decoupled real and reactive power regulation can also be achieved in the grid forming design. This type of design has been prototyped and shown great potential to enable retrofitting of large amounts of grid-following controllers through purely software algorithm update. The technology ensures reliable operation of power grids with high penetration of IBRs, thereby further reducing fossil fueled energy sources and cut down carbon emission.

A Generic Two-Vector Model Predictive Control for Hybrid Multilevel Converters

In this article, a generic two-vector model predictive control (TV-MPC) strategy is proposed for the hybrid multilevel converters (HMCs). The proposed method selects two optimal voltage vectors among all the vector candidates using a geometric positioning approach to reduce the computational burden, which is a common issue in the existing MPC methods for HMC. Then duty cycles of the two selected vectors are optimized to minimize the current tracking error, such that the current tracking performance can be enhanced compared with the conventional MPC. In addition, the voltages of the floating dc capacitors can be balanced by evaluating all switching sequences that belong to the optimal voltage vectors with optimal duty cycles. Here, the concept of the proposed TV-MPC is generic and applicable for any HMCs. A typical HMC based on active neutral-point-clamped topology is adopted as a case study in this work. Comprehensive simulation and experimental studies are performed on an all silicon-carbide HMC prototype to validate the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme.

Human behavior determinants of exposure to Anopheles vectors of malaria in Sumba, Indonesia

Malaria vector control interventions in Sumba, Indonesia, have not been able to eliminate malaria. Human drivers of exposure to Anopheles bites were investigated as part of a larger clinical trial evaluating the impact of a spatial repellent product on malaria incidence. Human behavioral observations (HBOs) evaluating temporal and spatial presence, sleeping behaviors, and insecticide treated net (ITN) use, were collected parallel to entomological collections—indoor and outdoor human landing catches (HLCs), and house hold surveys. Data demonstrates that mosquito access to humans, enabled by structurally open houses, is evident by the similar entomological landing rates both inside and outside households. The presence of animals inside houses was associated with increased mosquito entry–however, the number of humans present inside houses was not related to increased mosquito landing. Analyzing mosquito landing rates with human behavior data enables the spatial and temporal estimation of exposure to Anopheles bites, accounting for intervention (ITN) presence and usage. Human behavior adjusted exposure to Anopheles bites was found to be highest in the early in the evening, but continued at lower levels throughout the night. Over the night, most exposure (53%) occurred when people were indoors and not under the protection of nets (asleep or awake) followed by exposure outside (44%). Characterized gaps in protection are outdoor exposure as well as exposure indoors–when awake, and when asleep and not using ITNs. Interestingly, in the primary trial, even though there was not a significant impact of the spatial repellent on vector biting rates by themselves (16%), when factoring in human behavior, there was approximately 28% less exposure in the intervention arm than in the placebo arm. The treated arm had less human behavior adjusted bites in all spaces evaluated though there was proportionally higher exposure indoors. This analysis points to the importance of using HBOs both towards understanding gaps in protection as well as how interventions are evaluated. To mitigate ongoing transmission, understanding context specific spatial and temporal exposure based on the interactions of vectors, humans and interventions would be vital for a directed evidence-based control or elimination strategy.

Efficient Ensemble-Based Stochastic Gradient Methods for Optimization Under Geological Uncertainty

Ensemble-based stochastic gradient methods, such as the ensemble optimization (EnOpt) method, the simplex gradient (SG) method, and the stochastic simplex approximate gradient (StoSAG) method, approximate the gradient of an objective function using an ensemble of perturbed control vectors. These methods are increasingly used in solving reservoir optimization problems because they are not only easy to parallelize and couple with any simulator but also computationally more efficient than the conventional finite-difference method for gradient calculations. In this work, we show that EnOpt may fail to achieve sufficient improvement of the objective function when the differences between the objective function values of perturbed control variables and their ensemble mean are large. On the basis of the comparison of EnOpt and SG, we propose a hybrid gradient of EnOpt and SG to save on the computational cost of SG. We also suggest practical ways to reduce the computational cost of EnOpt and StoSAG by approximating the objective function values of unperturbed control variables using the values of perturbed ones. We first demonstrate the performance of our improved ensemble schemes using a benchmark problem. Results show that the proposed gradients saved about 30–50% of the computational cost of the same optimization by using EnOpt, SG, and StoSAG. As a real application, we consider pressure management in carbon storage reservoirs, for which brine extraction wells need to be optimally placed to reduce reservoir pressure buildup while maximizing the net present value. Results show that our improved schemes reduce the computational cost significantly.
