Isolating Unisolated Upsilons with Anomaly Detection in CMS Open Data

We present the first study of anti-isolated Upsilon decays to two muons (ϒ→𝜇⁺⁢𝜇⁻) in proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider. Using a machine learning (ML)-based anomaly detection strategy, we “rediscover” the ϒ in 13 TeV CMS Open Data from 2016, despite overwhelming anti-isolated backgrounds. We elevate the signal significance to 6.4⁢𝜎 using these methods, starting from 1.6⁢𝜎 using the dimuon mass spectrum alone. Moreover, we demonstrate improved sensitivity from using an ML-based estimate of the multifeature likelihood compared to traditional “cut-and-count” methods. This is the first ever detection of anti-isolated Upsilons, which can be useful in the study of heavy-flavor fragmentation in quantum chromodynamics. Our Letter demonstrates that it is possible and practical to find real signals in experimental collider data using ML-based anomaly detection, and we distill a readily accessible benchmark dataset from the CMS Open Data to facilitate future anomaly detection developments.

Hiding in the Shadow of the Upsilon: Ditaus from a Light Pseudoscalar

The CMS collaboration has reported a measurement of $Υ$ decays to ditaus using $61.9~{\rm fb}^{-1}$ of scouting data. If interpreted as the decay of $Υ(1S,2S,3S)$, the measured ditau rate is more than ten times that seen in the dimuon final states at the $\sim 3 σ$ level, and is likewise inconsistent with the branching ratios measured at $B$-factories. If confirmed with more data and at higher significance, such a violation of lepton flavor universality would necessitate new physics. In this Letter, we present a simple model with a light pseudoscalar coincidentally near the $Υ(1S)$ mass, which mixes with two Higgs doublets in the alignment limit. Such a particle naturally decays primarily to taus and evades all existing experimental constraints, while implying a number of predictions that can be tested in the near future.

Charged-hadron identification at Belle II

The Belle II experiment’s ability to identify particles critically affects the sensitivity of its measurements. We describe Belle II’s algorithms for identifying charged particles and evaluate their performance in separating pions, kaons, and protons using $426\,\text {fb}^{-1}$ of data collected at the energy-asymmetric $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider SuperKEKB in 2019–2022 at center-of-mass energies at and near the mass of the $\Upsilon$ (4S).

Bayesian Optimization of The Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider Luminosity via s * Control

A state-of-the-art jet detector named sPHENIX was proposed, commissioned, and operated at the Rel ativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) from 2023 to 2025. This detector featured precision tracking and calorime try that enable high-statistics studies of the Quark Gluon Plasma through jet modification, upsilon suppres sion, and open heavy flavor production. The innermost component of the three sPHENIX tracking systems is the Monolithic-Active-Pixel-Sensor-based Vertex Detec tor (MVTX) (Fig. 1), which has an acceptance within | s | < 0.1m of the interaction point (IP).

Gluon saturation effects in exclusive heavy vector meson photoproduction

We study exclusive J/ψ and ϒ photoproduction for proton and Pb targets in the high-energy limit, with the energy dependence computed using the linear Balitsky–Fadin–Kuraev–Lipatov and the nonlinear Balitsky–Kovchegov evolution equations. The difference between these two evolution equations can be directly attributed to gluon saturation physics. We find that for proton targets there is no difference between the two approaches at the energies of the currently available data, while for Pb targets in J/ψ production the data shows a clear preference for the evolution with gluon saturation.
