Machine-learning Kohn–Sham potential from dynamics in time-dependent Kohn–Sham systems

Abstract The construction of a better exchange-correlation potential in time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) can improve the accuracy of TDDFT calculations and provide more accurate predictions of the properties of many-electron systems. Here, we propose a machine learning method to develop the energy functional and the Kohn–Sham potential of a time-dependent Kohn–Sham (TDKS) system is proposed. The method is based on the dynamics of the Kohn–Sham system and does not require any data on the exact Kohn–Sham potential for training the model. We demonstrate the results of our method with a 1D harmonic oscillator example and a 1D two-electron example. We show that the machine-learned Kohn–Sham potential matches the exact Kohn–Sham potential in the absence of memory effect. Our method can still capture the dynamics of the Kohn–Sham system in the presence of memory effects. The machine learning method developed in this article provides insight into making better approximations of the energy functional and the Kohn–Sham potential in the TDKS system.

Dynamic Learning of Correlation Potentials for a Time-Dependent Kohn-Sham System

We develop methods to learn the correlation potential for a time-dependent Kohn-Sham (TDKS) system in one spatial dimension. We start from a low-dimensional two-electron system for which we can numerically solve the time-dependent Schr¨odinger equation; this yields electron densities suitable for training models of the correlation potential. We frame the learning problem as one of optimizing a least-squares objective subject to the constraint that the dynamics obey the TDKS equation. Applying adjoints, we develop efficient methods to compute gradients and thereby learn models of the correlation potential. Our results show that it is possible to learn values of the correlation potential such that the resulting electron densities match ground truth densities. We also show how to learn correlation potential functionals with memory, demonstrating one such model that yields reasonable results for trajectories outside the training set.

The LISE package: solvers for static and time-dependent superfluid local density approximation equations in three dimensions

Nuclear implementation of the density functional theory (DFT) is at present the only microscopic framework applicable to the whole nuclear landscape. The extension of DFT to superfluid systems in the spirit of the Kohn-Sham approach, the superfluid local density approximation (SLDA) and its extension to time-dependent situations, time-dependent superfluid local density ap- proximation (TDSLDA), have been extensively used to describe various static and dynamical problems in nuclear physics, neutron star crust, and cold atom systems. In this paper, we present the codes that solve the static and time-dependent SLDA equations in three-dimensional coordinate space without any symmetry restriction. These codes are fully parallelized with the message passing interface (MPI) library and take advantage of graphic processing units (GPU) for accelerating execution. The dynamic codes have checkpoint/restart capabilities and for initial conditions one can use any generalized Slater determinant type of wave function. The code can describe a large number of physical problems: nuclear fission, collisions of heavy ions, the interaction of quantized vor- tices with nuclei in the nuclear star crust, excitation of superfluid fermion systems by time dependent external fields, quantum shock waves, domain wall generation and propagation, the dynamics of the Anderson-Bogoliubov-Higgs mode, dynamics of fragmented condensates, vortex rings dynamics, generation and dynamics of quantized vortices, their crossing and recombinations and the incipient phases of quantum turbulence.

Sparse-Stochastic Fragmented Exchange for Large-Scale Hybrid Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory Calculations

Here we extend our recently developed sparse-stochastic fragmented exchange formalism for ground-state near-gap hybrid DFT to calculate absorption spectra within linear-response time-dependent generalized Kohn-Sham DFT (LR-GKS-TDDFT) for systems consisting of thousands of valence electrons within a grid-based/plane-wave representation. A mixed deterministic/fragmented-stochastic compression of the exchange kernel, here using long-range explicit exchange functionals, provides an efficient method for accurate optical spectra. Both real-time propagation as well as frequency-resolved Casida-equation-type approaches for spectra are presented, and the method is applied to large molecular dyes.

Magnetization dynamics with time-dependent spin-density functional theory: Significance of exchange-correlation torques

In spin-density functional theory (SDFT) for noncollinear magnetic materials, the Kohn-Sham system features exchange-correlation (xc) scalar potentials and magnetic fields. The significance of the xc magnetic fields is not very well explored; in particular, they can give rise to local torques on the magnetization, which are absent in standard local and semilocal approximations. Here, exact benchmark solutions for a five-site extended Hubbard lattice at half filling and in the presence of spin-orbit coupling are compared with SDFT results obtained using orbital-dependent exchange-only approximations. The magnetization dynamics following short-pulse excitations is found to be reasonably well described in the exchange-only approximation for weak to moderate interactions. For stronger interactions and near transitions between magnetically ordered and frustrated phases, exchange and correlation torques tend to compensate each other and must both be accounted for.

Exact time-dependent density-functional theory for nonperturbative dynamics of the helium atom

By inverting the time-dependent Kohn-Sham equation for a numerically exact dynamics of the helium atom, we show that the dynamical step and peak features of the exact correlation potential found previously in one-dimensional models persist for real three-dimensional systems. We demonstrate that the Kohn-Sham and true current-densities differ by a rotational component. The results have direct implications for approximate TDDFT calculations of atoms and molecules in strong fields, emphasizing the need to go beyond the adiabatic approximation, and highlighting caution in quantitative use of the Kohn-Sham current.

Developing new and understanding old approximations in TDDFT

When a system has evolved far from a ground-state, the adiabatic approximations commonly used in time-dependent density functional theory calculations completely fail in some applications, while giving qualitatively good predictions in others, and sometimes even quantitative predictions. It is not clearly understood why this is so, and developing practical approximations going beyond the adiabatic approximation remains a challenge. This paper explores three different lines of investigation. First, an expression for the exact time-dependent exchange–correlation potential suggests that the accuracy of an adiabatic approximation is intimately related to the deviation between the natural orbital occupation numbers of the physical system and those of the Kohn–Sham system, and we explore this on some exactly-solvable model systems. The exact expression further suggests a path to go beyond the adiabatic approximations, and in the second part we discuss a newly proposed class of memory-dependent approximations developed in this way. Finally, we derive a new expression for the exact exchange–correlation potential from a coupling-constant path integration.

GW with hybrid functionals for large molecular systems

A low-cost approach for stochastically sampling static exchange during time-dependent Hartree–Fock-type propagation is presented. This enables the use of an excellent hybrid density functional theory (DFT) starting point for stochastic GW quasiparticle energy calculations. Generalized Kohn–Sham molecular orbitals and energies, rather than those of a local-DFT calculation, are used for building the Green function and effective Coulomb interaction. The use of an optimally tuned hybrid diminishes the starting point dependency in one-shot stochastic GW, effectively avoiding the need for self-consistent GW iterations.

Dynamical structure factors of warm dense matter from time-dependent orbital-free and mixed-stochastic-deterministic density functional theory

Abstract We present the first calculations of the inelastic part of the dynamical structure factor (DSF) for warm dense matter (WDM) using time-dependent orbital-free density functional theory (TD-OF-DFT) and mixed-stochastic-deterministic (mixed) Kohn Sham TD-DFT (KS TD-DFT). WDM is an intermediate phase of matter found in planetary cores and laser-driven experiments, where the accurate calculation of the DSF is critical for interpreting x-ray Thomson scattering measurements. Traditional TD-DFT methods, while highly accurate, are computationally expensive, motivating the exploration of TD-OF-DFT and mixed TD-KS-DFT as more efficient alternatives. We applied these methods to experimentally measured WDM systems, including solid-density aluminum and beryllium, compressed beryllium, and carbon–hydrogen mixtures. Our results show that TD-OF-DFT requires a dynamical kinetic energy potential in order to qualitatively capture the plasmon response. Additionally, it struggles with capturing bound electron contributions. In contrast, mixed TD-KS-DFT offers greater accuracy in distinguishing bound and free electron effects, aligning well with experimental data, though at a higher computational cost. This study highlights the trade-offs between computational efficiency and accuracy, demonstrating that TD-OF-DFT remains a valuable tool for rapid scans of parameter space, while mixed TD-KS-DFT should be preferred for high-fidelity simulations. Our findings provide insight into the future development of DFT methods for WDM and suggest potential improvements for TD-OF-DFT.

Changes in polarization dictate necessary approximations for modeling electronic deexcitation intensity: Application to x-ray emission

Accurate simulation of electronic excitations and deexcitations are critical for complementing complex spectroscopic experiments and can provide validation to theoretical approaches. Here, using a generalized framework, we contrast the accuracy and validity of orbital-constrained and linear-response approaches that build upon Kohn-Sham density functional theory (DFT) to simulate emission spectra of electronic origin and propose an efficient approximation, named many-body x-ray emission spectroscopy or MBXES, for simulating such processes. We show analytically as well as with computed examples that for electronic (de)excitation leading to an appreciable change in polarization (i.e., density rearrangement), the adiabatic approximation in a response-based formalism will be inadequate for the calculation of oscillator strength. Thus, such a change (e.g., in the net electrostatic dipole moment of a finite system) can be used as a metric for evaluating the applicability of the adiabatic response-based approach and can be particularly valuable in x-ray emission spectroscopy. On the other hand, MBXES, the flexible method introduced in this paper, can compute oscillator strengths accurately at a much lower computational expense on the basis of two DFT-based self-consistent field calculations. Using illustrative examples of emission spectra, the efficacy of the MBXES method is demonstrated by comparison with its parent theory, orbital-optimized DFT, and with experiments.

Mixed stochastic-deterministic density functional theoretic decomposition of Kubo–Greenwood conductivities in the projector augmented wave formalism

Pairing the accuracy of the Kohn–Sham density-functional framework with the efficiency of a stochastic algorithmic approach, mixed stochastic-deterministic density functional theory (mDFT) achieves a favorable computational scaling with system sizes and electronic temperatures. We employ the recently developed mDFT formalism to investigate the dynamic charge-transport properties of systems in the warm dense matter regime. The optical conductivity spectra are computed for single- and multi- component mixtures of carbon, hydrogen, and beryllium using two complementary approaches: Kubo–Greenwood in the mDFT picture and real-time time-dependent mDFT. We further devise a decomposition of the Onsager coefficients leading up to the Kubo–Greenwood spectra to exhibit contributions from the deterministic, stochastic, and mixed electronic state transitions at different incident photon energies.
