Improved Hydrogen Utilization and Carbon Recovery for Higher Efficiency Thermochemical Bio-oil Pathways

The goal of this project was to develop a novel integrated direct biomass liquefaction process with improved hydrogen utilization and better carbon efficiency compared to other thermochemical conversion technologies for advanced biofuels production. Reactive catalytic fast pyrolysis, or RCFP, combines a robust hydrodeoxygenation catalyst for in situ pyrolysis in an excess of hydrogen at atmospheric (low) pressure. RCFP was developed to leverage advantages from catalytic fast pyrolysis (process simplicity and improved bio-crude quality) and biomass hydropyrolysis (enhanced hydrodeoxygenation) to produce a thermally-stable, low oxygen containing bio-crude intermediate that can be upgraded in a single conventional hydroprocessing step to produce gasoline- and diesel-range hydrocarbons. In parallel, carbon lost to the aqueous phase was recovered as renewable methane from anaerobic digestion to offset fossil carbon required to meet the hydrogen demand of the integrated process.

Mitigation of Molten Salt Corrosion

The desire to increase the peak operational temperature of Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) plants to lower the levelized cost of CSP-derived electricity, has led to consideration of an earth-abundant, low-cost, thermally-stable, molten MgCl 2 -KCl-NaCl (40-40-20 mole%) salt for high-temperature thermal energy storage and heat transfer. The reliable, long-term containment of such a molten salt is challenging, however, due to the corrosion of cost-effective, high-temperature structural metal alloys in this salt (particularly if this salt is contaminated with oxygen-bearing species). This project has been focused on: i) development of equipment for evaluating corrosion kinetics in molten chlorides under well-controlled thermal, fluid dynamic, and atmospheric conditions at CSP-relevant temperatures, ii) use of such equipment to evaluate the influence of forced convection on corrosion kinetics (to determine the role of liquid phase diffusion on such corrosion), and iii) identifying a corrosion-mitigation strategy that can be industrially applied to achieve a projected annual corrosion ≤30 μm at CSP-relevant temperatures. The overall goals of this project have been: i) to understand the rate-limiting step(s) and associated kinetic laws governing corrosion in molten chlorides at 750°C, ii) to determine key operational parameters affecting the corrosion kinetics in molten salts, and iii) to demonstrate the tailoring of such parameters to appreciably reduce such corrosion.

Novel aminobenzyl and imidobenzyl benzenes

Compounds are useful as intermediates for several classes of polymers. Amines can function as cross-linking agents for epoxide and urethane polymers, as well as intermediates for synthesis of thermally-stable addition-type polyimides. Imide derivatives can be obtained by reacting amines with certain monoanhydrides containing olefinic unsaturation.

Non-flammable polyimide materials for commercial application

Thermally-stable, fire-resistant polyimide foams developed for use as fire protection in aircraft, spacecraft and ground applications are presented. Polyimide precursors, synthesized by the reaction of 3, 3', 4, 4'-benzophenone tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride with a mixture of two diamines, can be processed into foams by indirect or direct heating techniques. Flexible resilient foams and thermal acoustical foams produced by the microwave heating of polyimide precursors are shown to conform to requirements for aircraft seating foams and thermal and acoustical insulation materials, respectively. Rigid polyimide foams reinforced by carbon mat, chopped carbon mat and chopped glass strand fillers and prepared by the microwave heating of a continuous mat, followed by its compression, or by filling a honeycomb structure with low density foam, are found to exhibit outstanding fire resistance and have mechanical properties approaching those desired for structural materials.

Electronic properties of carbon fibers intercalated with copper chloride

Copper chloride intercalated pitch-based carbon fibers are found to have electrical resistivities as low as 12.9 micro-ohm-cm, and are air- and thermally-stable at and above room temperature. This is therefore a good candidate system for conductor application. In addition, Shubnikov-deHaas quantum oscillatory effects were found, and electronic properties of the intercalated fiber are studied using magnetic fields to 20 tesla.

High-Strength, Low-Shrinkage Ceramic Tiles

Addition of refractory fibers and whiskers to insulating tiles composed primarily of fibrous silica, such as those used on the skin of Space Shuttle orbiter, greatly improves properties. New composition suitable for lightweight, thermally-stable mirror blanks and as furnace and kiln insulation. Improved tiles made with current tile-fabrication processes. For given density, tiles containing silicon carbide and boron additives stronger in flexure than tiles made from silica alone. In addition, tiles with additives nearly immune to heat distortion, whereas pure-silica tiles shrink and become severely distorted.

Novel Ordered Crown Ether-Containing Polyimides for Ion Conduction

We report the synthesis and characterization of thermally-stable polyimides for use as battery and fuel cell electrolyte membranes. Dianhydrides used were 1,4,5,8- naphthalenetetracarboxylic dianhydride and/or 4,4'-(hexafluoroisopropylidene)diphthalic anhydride. Diamines used were anti-4,4-diaminodibenzo-l8-crown-6, 4,4'- diaminodibenzo-24-crown-8, 2,2-bis(4-aminophenyl)hexafluoropropane, and/or 2,5- diaminobenzenesulfonic acid. The polymers were characterized using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), thermal analysis and X-ray diffraction. Polymers containing the hexafluoroisopropylidene (HFIP) group were soluble in common organic solvents, while polymers without the HFIP group were very poorly soluble. Sulfonation yields polymers that are sparingly soluble in aqueous base and/or methanol. Degree of sulfonation, determined by titration, was between one and three sulfonate groups per repeat unit. Proton conductivity was determined as a function of water content, with a maximum conductivity of l x 10(exp -2) per centimeter when fully hydrated. Crown ether-containing polymers exhibit a high degree of order that may be indicative of crown ether channel formation, which may facilitate Li(+) transport for use in battery membranes.

Wide-Range Temperature Sensors with High-Level Pulse Train Output

Two types of temperature sensors have been developed for wide-range temperature applications. The two sensors measure temperature in the range of -190 to +200 C and utilize a thin-film platinum RTD (resistance temperature detector) as the temperature-sensing element. Other parts used in the fabrication of these sensors include NPO (negative-positive- zero) type ceramic capacitors for timing, thermally-stable film or wirewound resistors, and high-temperature circuit boards and solder. The first type of temperature sensor is a relaxation oscillator circuit using an SOI (silicon-on-insulator) operational amplifier as a comparator. The output is a pulse train with a period that is roughly proportional to the temperature being measured. The voltage level of the pulse train is high-level, for example 10 V. The high-level output makes the sensor less sensitive to noise or electromagnetic interference. The output can be read by a frequency or period meter and then converted into a temperature reading. The second type of temperature sensor is made up of various types of multivibrator circuits using an SOI type 555 timer and the passive components mentioned above. Three configurations have been developed that were based on the technique of charging and discharging a capacitor through a resistive element to create a train of pulses governed by the capacitor-resistor time constant. Both types of sensors, which operated successfully over the wide temperature range, have potential use in extreme temperature environments including jet engines and space exploration missions.
