Workshop on Establishing and Operating a National Nuclear Security Support Centre Hypothetical Scenario: “Centralia Nuclear Security Support Centre Technical Support Plan”

This plan outlines the systemic and coordinated management of the CNSSC technical support programme. In accordance with the CNSSC Strategy Implementation Plan and Memoranda of Understanding among stakeholders, Centralia Border Guards (CBG) and Centralia Nuclear Energy Agency (CNEA) will lead the effort to develop standardized approach to technical support and will provide technical support to the following CNSSC stakeholders: CBG, CNEA, Centralia National Police (CNP), Centralia Coast Guard (CCG), and CentrAtom/Centralia Nuclear Power Plant (CNPP).

USDI DCS technical support: Mississippi Test Facility

The objective of the technical support effort is to provide hardware and data processing support to DCS users so that application of the system may be simply and effectively implemented. Technical support at Mississippi Test Facility (MTF) is concerned primarily with on-site hardware. The first objective of the DCP hardware support was to assure that standard measuring apparatus and techniques used by the USGS could be adapted to the DCS. The second objective was to try to standardize the miscellaneous variety of parameters into a standard instrument set. The third objective was to provide the necessary accessories to simplify the use and complement the capabilities of the DCP. The standard USGS sites have been interfaced and are presently operating. These sites are stream gauge, ground water level and line operated quality of water. Evapotranspiration, meteorological and battery operated quality of water sites are planned for near future DCP operation. Three accessories which are under test or development are the Chu antenna, solar power supply and add-on memory. The DCP has proven to be relatively easy to interface with many monitors. The large antenna is awkward to install and transport. The DCS has met the original requirements well; it has and is proving that an operation, satellite-based data collection system is feasible.

Annual Report on NCSP Technical Support task in BNL during FY25

This work reports on the investigations done during FY 25 in collaboration with one 2025 Summer undergraduate intern through the DOE SULI program. These efforts were partially funded by the Nuclear Criticality Safety Program through the Technical Support Succession Plan task. This project, developed by Matthew Molnar, aimed to apply the BNL’s machine-learning code to correct spin mis-assignments in neutron resonances, the Bayesian Resonance Reclassifier (BRR), to the odd-even nucleus 143 Nd. For this, the handling of spingroup classification had to be further investigated and improved.

Annual Report on NCSP Technical Support task in BNL during FY24

This work reports on the investigations done during FY 24 in collaboration with two 2024 Summer undergraduate interns through the DOE SULI and BNL SURP programs. These efforts were partially funded by the Nuclear Criticality Safety Program through the Technical Support Succession Plan task. The first project, developed by Ian Snider, focused on testing the impact of uncertainties in thermal cross sections for multiple materials in nuclear reactor simulations. The second project aimed implement concurrent into BNL’s machine-learning code to correct spin mis-assignments in neutron resonances, the Bayesian Resonance Reclassifier (BRR).

GridLAB-D Technical Support Document: Residential Equivalent Thermal Parameter Model

GridLAB-D is a power distribution systems simulation and analysis tool developed by Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. Although GridLAB-D and its underlying residential load model has been used in a variety of power systems analyses, comprehensive documentation of the derivation of the residential house model has not been formally published. The purpose of this technical support document is to serve as a comprehensive resource for the thermal dynamics modeling and house definition implemented in GridLAB-D. It covers model derivation, parameter definitions, and implementation steps in the codebase.

ERTS-1 DCS technical support provided by Wallops Station

Wallops Station accepted the tasks of providing ground truth to several ERTS investigators, operating a DCP repair depot, designing and building an airborne DCP Data Acquisition System, and providing aircraft underflight support for several other investigators. Additionally, the data bank is generally available for use by ERTS and other investigators that have a scientific interest in data pertaining to the Chesapeake Bay area. Working with DCS has provided a means of evaluating the system as a data collection device possibly applicable to ongoing Earth Resources Program activities in the Chesapeake Bay area as well as providing useful data and services to other ERTS investigators. The two areas of technical support provided by Wallops, ground truth stations and repair for DCPs, are briefly discussed.

Integrated Solar Upper Stage Technical Support

NASA Lewis Research Center is participating in the Integrated Solar Upper Stage (ISUS) program. This program is a ground-based demonstration of an upper stage concept that will be used to generate both solar propulsion and solar power. Solar energy collected by a primary concentrator is directed into the aperture of a secondary concentrator and further concentrated into the aperture of a heat receiver. The energy stored in the receiver-absorber-converter is used to heat hydrogen gas to provide propulsion during the orbital transfer portion of the mission. During the balance of the mission, electric power is generated by thermionic diodes. Several materials issues were addressed as part of the technical support portion of the ISUS program, including: 1) Evaluation of primary concentrator coupons; 2) Evaluation of secondary concentrator coupons; 3) Evaluation of receiver-absorber-converter coupons; 4) Evaluation of in-test witness coupons. Two different types of primary concentrator coupons were evaluated from two different contractors-replicated coupons made from graphite-epoxy composite and coupons made from microsheet glass. Specular reflectivity measurements identified the replicated graphite-epoxy composite coupons as the primary concentrator material of choice. Several different secondary concentrator materials were evaluated, including a variety of silver and rhodium reflectors. The specular reflectivity of these materials was evaluated under vacuum at temperatures up to 800 C. The optical properties of several coupons of rhenium on graphite were evaluated to predict the thermal performance of the receiver-absorber-converter. Finally, during the ground test demonstration, witness coupons placed in strategic locations throughout the thermal vacuum facility were evaluated for contaminants. All testing for the ISUS program was completed successfully in 1997. Investigations related to materials issues have proven helpful in understanding the operation of the test article, leading to a potential ISUS flight test in 2002.

TEAMER Technical Support for Aquantis (Materials) (Final Report)

The Aquantis Tidal Power Tug is a unique synthesis of best-available technologies and materials configured as a novel spar vessel to create an optimal platform for tidal stream energy conversion. The Power Tug utilizes an upstream-facing horizontal, 2-bladed rotor. To drive down capital costs and extend life, Aquantis proposes to employ new materials for the blades that are both less expensive than current state-of-the-art materials and are potentially better suited for survival in a submerged, seawater environment. Coupons from a novel geopolymer material will be tested in a load frame to characterize material properties. The Requestor is requesting technical assistance for evaluating mechanical properties of a novel geopolymer material for application in tidal stream energy conversion systems. This work will establish characteristic properties of a geopolymer material under dry and saturated conditions through material coupon testing. Material coupons will be tested to characterize properties including: a) Tensile strength, b) Compression strength, c) Flexural strength, d) Modulus of elasticity, e) Fatigue strength at varying load levels. The types of material tests performed will be guided by characteristics required to validate material properties for use in full-scale structures. Characterization of material properties that consider the demands of a full-scale structure is a necessary step in research and development that can enable the use of geopolymer materials in tidal stream energy conversion systems.

Outer planet entry probe system study. Volume 2: Supporting technical studies

The environment, science investigations, and general mission analysis considerations are given first. These data are followed by discussions of the studies pertaining to the planets Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. Except for Neptune, each planet discussion is divided into two parts: (1) parametric activities and (2) probe definition for that planet, or the application of a given probe for that planet. The Neptune discussion is limited to parametrics in the area of science and mission analysis. Each of the probe system definitions consists of system and subsystem details including telecommunications, data handling, power pyrotechnics, attitude control, structures, propulsion, thermal control, and probe to spacecraft integration. The first configuration is discussed in detail and the subsequent configuration discussions are limited to the differences. Finally, the hardware availability to support a probe system and commonality of science, missions, and subsystems for use at the various planets are considered.

BTRIC Technical Support for Appalachia: FY 2023 Summary Report on Net Negative Carbon Building Demonstration with AgPod

This study investigates the effects of various concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) on the photosynthesis and biomass accumulation of crops growing in an Agricultural Pod (AgPod). The initial test crop was kale. It has been found that increasing the CO 2 concentration in the AgPod promotes higher photosynthetic rates in kale plants up to 1300 ppm (highest CO 2 concentration). An interesting finding was that net photosynthetic rates of kale leaves remain unsaturated until unusually high levels of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR, > 1200 µmolm-2s-1) and CO 2 concentration (> 1100 ppm) are reached. Such high levels of saturating PAR and CO 2 concentration values rarely occur under natural conditions, suggesting a promising potential for carbon capture via enriched greenhouse crop production. This task is one part of an overall plan to incorporate an AgPod to utilize carbon captured from the atmosphere to achieve net negative carbon emissions in a small neighborhood or community.

TEAMER Technical Support for Aquantis (Modeling): Cooperative Research and Development Final Report, CRADA Number CRD-21-17763

NREL will provide numerical modelling support to Requestor by completing four successive stages of numerical modeling effort which are capable of accurate predicting the performance of the Aquantis turbine. NREL will develop a baseline OpenFAST model (a couple model of AeroDyn and ElastoDyn solver) of the Aquantis turbine, subsequently couples this model to OrcaFlex or within OpenFAST framework to preliminarily design and explore a full floating tidal turbine system in a control co-design process.

Commercial Building Prototypes Based on ANSI/ASHRAE/IES Standard 90.1-2019 Appendix G PRM: Technical Support Document

The two paths for documenting compliance with ANSI/ASHRAE/IES Standard 90.1 are the prescriptive path and the performance path. Beyond code programs and rating systems (for example, USGBC-LEED ) are primarily known to use a third path – the Appendix G Performance Rating Method. An update in the 2016 edition of Standard 90.1 approved the Appendix G Performance Rating System for code compliance, extending its application and allowing for greater consistency of modeling rules for code and beyond code building energy modeling. The Appendix G PRM provides rules for the development of whole building energy models of baseline and proposed models for calculating the “performance cost index target” value using the simulated energy results of the baseline and proposed models and the building performance factors published in Table 4.2.1.1 of the Standard. This report documents (1) the methodology used for development of the baseline and proposed energy models of the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and U.S. Department of Energy commercial building prototypes using the Appendix G Performance Rating Method; and (2) the building performance factors that were calculated using those models.

BTRIC Technical Support for Appalachia: FY 2024 Summary Report on Net Negative Carbon Building Demonstration with AgPod

This report investigates the effects of various concentrations of CO 2 on the photosynthesis and biomass accumulation of crops growing in an AgPod, using kale as the test crop. In the first year of the study, increasing the CO 2 concentration in the AgPod was found to promote higher photosynthetic rates in kale plants up to 1,300 ppm (the highest CO 2 concentration measured). An interesting finding was that net photosynthetic rates of kale leaves remain unsaturated until reaching unusually high levels of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR, > 1,200 µmol m -1 s -1 ) and CO 2 concentration (> 1,100 ppm). Such high levels of saturating PAR and CO 2 concentration values rarely occur under natural conditions, suggesting a promising potential for carbon capture via enriched controlled environment agriculture (ECEA). During the second year of the study, a second crop was planted to confirm the actual effects on growth with increased CO 2 concentrations. Our results suggest that growing kale plants in the AgPod system at higher CO 2 levels resulted in a successful and highly productive crop, up to three times the amount grown at 415 CO 2 . Further, the kale plants grown under higher CO 2 conditions (1000 ppm) are not CO 2 saturated and can potentially further improve yield at even higher CO 2 environments.

TEAMER Technical Support for Optimal Control of an Oscillating Surge Wave Energy Converter (CRADA Final Report)

This project will focus on running experiments that evaluate the benefits of using model predictive control (MPC) to optimize power absorbed by a laboratory-scale oscillating surge wave energy converter (OSWEC). MPC is a promising technique to optimize wave energy converter (WEC) behavior while applying system constraints that can help promote structural integrity and device survivability, but there are few studies that experimentally test this control scheme on WECs. Therefore, the Participant is proposing a series of tests that will assess the benefits of MPC experimentally in response to a variety of sea states. For these tests, the Participant will provide the OSWEC device and Data Acquisition (DAQ) system, and request support from the Contractor to use and operate the wave tank for experiments.

TEAMER Technical Support of Ramboll's for Numerical Modeling of WECs to Support OES Task 10: Cooperative Research and Development (Final Report)

National Technology & Engineering Solutions of Sandia, LLC (NTESS) in collaboration with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), and with guidance from Ramboll, will perform fluid dynamics simulations to support of The Ocean Energy Systems (OES) Energy Technology Collaboration Program Task 10 Wave Energy Converters (WEC) Modelling Verification and Validation effort. Specific numerical simulations include the fixed device wave impingement studies to benchmark the performance of simulation techniques against physical testing results.

TEAMER Technical Support on Biofouling and Corrosion for E-Wave Technologies LLC Novel (Abstract)

National Technology & Engineering Solutions of Sandia (NTESS) in collaboration with the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), and with guidance from E-Wave, will assess corrosion and biofouling challenges specific to E-Wave’s innovative WEC designed to retrofit into and power existing aquaculture farm infrastructure from ocean waves. The teams will examine coatings via a static raw seawater test and determine the efficacy of coatings for E-Wave’s applications. Samples will include panels of materials provided by E-Wave and coated with three different paint treatments. Fouling will be determined using a staining technique followed by photographic analysis to evaluate fouling intensity on the surface. Materials will also be weighed before and after submersion to facilitate weight change analysis resulting from fouling organisms aggregating on the materials.
