Intelligent System Partitioning for Agent-Based Security Constrained Optimal Power Flow

This project developed scalable, computationally efficient algorithms to solve realistic large-scale power system optimization problems as part of a larger series of competitions run by ARPA-E. These problems are important because the secure and reliable operation of the power grid, especially under increased uncertainty and variability, is growing increasingly challenging. The economic feasibility of the proposed methods developed by our team is quite low, considering it’s a purely software-based solution to operate power grids more efficiently. The technical effectiveness, as evidenced by our performance in the competition, balances heuristics and approximations to provide a tradeoff between speed and accuracy.

GASNet-EX RMA Communication Performance on Recent Supercomputing Systems

Partitioned Global Address Space (PGAS) programming models, typified by systems such as Unified Parallel C (UPC) and Fortran coarrays, expose one-sided Remote Memory Access (RMA) communication as a key building block for High Performance Computing (HPC) applications. Architectural trends in supercomputing make such programming models increasingly attractive, and newer, more sophisticated models such as UPC++, Legion and Chapel that rely upon similar communication paradigms are gaining popularity. GASNet-EX is a portable, open-source, high-performance communication library designed to efficiently support the networking requirements of PGAS runtime systems and other alternative models in emerging exascale machines. The library is an evolution of the popular GASNet communication system, building upon 20 years of lessons learned. We present microbenchmark results which demonstrate the RMA performance of GASNet-EX is competitive with MPI implementations on four recent, high-impact, production HPC systems. These results are an update relative to previously published results on older systems. The networks measured here are representative of hardware currently used in six of the top ten fastest supercomputers in the world, and all of the exascale systems on the U.S. DOE road map.

Digital simulation by partitioning and uncoupling the system model

The present work reviews state variable simulation and then proposes a technique for simulation of nonlinear time varying systems by partitioning the system state variable model and uncoupling the resulting subsystem models so that the linear time-invariant ones can be simulated by state variable solution. Computational requirements and computer time are shown to be reduced. The method does, however, introduce an integration error due to the treatment of the intercoupling terms between the subsystems as inputs which are assumed constant over a computation interval. A fictitious sampler is thereby introduced, which is then derived in the form of a state variable error model. The application of this method in a simulation error analysis for a Saturn V attitude control system model and the simulation of a detailed nonlinear, single-axis model of the LST fine pointing control system is described.

Partitioning of regular computation on multiprocessor systems

Problem partitioning of regular computation over two dimensional meshes on multiprocessor systems is examined. The regular computation model considered involves repetitive evaluation of values at each mesh point with local communication. The computational workload and the communication pattern are the same at each mesh point. The regular computation model arises in numerical solutions of partial differential equations and simulations of cellular automata. Given a communication pattern, a systematic way to generate a family of partitions is presented. The influence of various partitioning schemes on performance is compared on the basis of computation to communication ratio.

Design of multisample, multistep phase partitioning apparatus for use on Space Shuttle Spacelab, and Spacelab missions

Traditional separation techniques are inadequate for many new bioprocessing challenges. Innovative separation methods such as aqueous two phase partitioning are needed to perpetuate bioprocess commercialization. Aqueous two phase polymer partitioning systems provide a process for separating biological materials when combined with microgravity. An innovative space qualified apparatus developed for carrying out separations by partitioning in immiscible polymer systems under mirogravity conditions is described. The apparatus offers an innovative approach to low gravity bioseparations in general and phase partitioning in particular. These capabilities support NASA's interest in serving the biotechnology research community and providing quantitative data in the gravity dependent components of separation processes.

Mitigating Grazing Flow Impedance Eduction Errors in Additively Manufactured Porous Liners

Additively manufactured porous metamaterials, including triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) cores, are promising candidates for aeroengine liners but often behave as extended-reacting treatments under grazing flow. Standard impedance eduction procedures assume locally-reacting behavior and can yield physically inconsistent results for such materials. This study evaluates internal partitions (thin solid walls inserted at regular intervals along the liner’s streamwise extent) as a means of suppressing internal streamwise propagation to improve eduction consistency. Six TPMS configurations were tested in the NASA Langley Grazing Flow Impedance Tube (GFIT) at partition spacings of 4′′, 2′′, and 1′′, as well as unpartitioned, and at Mach numbers up to 0.3. For most geometries, 2′′ partition spacing eliminated impedance discontinuities and substantially improved Prony correlation, though effectiveness varied with core topology. Partitions also altered the acoustic response of the liners: resistance increased, resonance frequencies shifted downward, and peak attenuation decreased while bandwidth broadened in some cases. Because partitions modify the liner itself, the educed impedance characterizes the partitioned system rather than the original unpartitioned core. These results establish partitioning as a practical pathway toward liners that are more compatible with standard eduction methods, while demonstrating that the intervention is itself an acoustic design change.

Studies on aqueous two phase polymer systems useful for partitioning of biological materials

The two phase systems that result when aqueous solutions of dextran and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) are mixed above a critical concentration of a few percent provide a useful medium for the separation of biological cell subpopulations via partition between the top, PEG-rich phase and the liquid-liquid phase boundary. Interfacial tensions of such systems have been measured by the rotating drop technique and found to range between 0.1-100 micro-N/m. The tension was found to depend on the length of the tie line describing the system on a phase diagram, via a power law relationship which differed depending on the concentration of Na phosphate buffer present. The electrokinetic properties of drops of one phase suspended in the other were studied for a variety of systems. It was found that the droplet electrophoretic mobility increased monotonically with phosphate concentration and drop diameter but exhibited the opposite sign from that anticipated from phosphate partition measurements. It was possible to take advantage of these electrokinetic properties and dramatically enhance the speed of phase separation through application of relatively small electric fields.

Order conditions for nonlinearly partitioned Runge-Kutta methods

Recently, a new class of nonlinearly partitioned Runge–Kutta (NPRK) methods was proposed for nonlinearly partitioned systems of autonomous ordinary differential equations y' = F(y, y). The target class of problems are those in which different scales, stiffnesses, or physics are coupled in a nonlinear way, wherein the desired partition cannot be written in a classical additive or component-wise fashion. Here we use a rooted-tree analysis to derive full-order conditions for NPRKM methods, where M denotes the number of nonlinear partitions. Due to the nonlinear coupling and thereby the mixed product differentials, it turns out that the standard node-colored rooted tree analysis used in analyzing ODE integrators does not naturally apply. Instead we develop a new edge-colored rooted-tree framework to address the nonlinear coupling. The resulting order conditions are enumerated, are provided directly for up to fourth order with M = 2 and third order with M = 3, and are related to existing order conditions of additive and partitioned RK methods. We conclude with an example that shows how the nonlinear order conditions can be used to obtain an embedded estimate of the state-dependent nonlinear coupling strength in a dynamical system.

R-Hope: Development Approach to Extreme Non-volatile Memory Reuse Onboard the Curiosity Rover

The MSL Curiosity rover landed on Mars on August~5, 2012. Over time, one of its two computers experienced critical hardware memory failure. This non-volatile NAND flash memory held file system partitions and tunable parameters needed for running rover flight software. The project assembled a design and development team to re-purpose a NOR flash memory hardware chip, only 1.5\% of the size of the NAND, to hold the file systems and parameters. The usable NOR memory required major software changes to accommodate the new limitations of slower access speeds, vastly different physical layout, and smaller size. This presentation discusses the approach, challenges, and outcomes of restoring function to the computer so it can act as a ``lifeboat'' in event of problems with the primary computer.

Eu speciation in apatite at 1 bar: An experimental study of valence-state partitioning by XANES, lattice strain, and Eu/Eu* in basaltic systems

Abstract Partition coefficients for rare earth elements (REEs) between apatite and basaltic melt were determined as a function of oxygen fugacity (fO2; iron-wüstite to hematite-magnetite buffers) at 1 bar and between 1110 and 1175 °C. Apatite-melt partitioning data for REE3+ (La, Sm, Gd, Lu) show near constant values at all experimental conditions, while bulk Eu becomes more incompatible (with an increasing negative anomaly) with decreasing fO2. Experiments define three apatite calibrations that can theoretically be used as redox sensors. The first, a XANES calibration that directly measures Eu valence in apatite, requires saturation at similar temperature-composition conditions to experiments and is defined by: ( E u 3 + ∑ E u ) Apatite = 1 1 + 10 - 0.10 ± 0.01 × l o g ⁡ ( f o 2 ) - 1.63 ± 0.16 . The second technique involves analysis of Sm, Eu, and Gd in both apatite and coexisting basaltic melt (glass), and is defined by: ( Eu E u * ) D Sm × Gd = 1 1 + 10 - 0.15 ± 0.03 × l o g ⁡ ( f o 2 ) - 2.46 ± 0.41 . The third technique is based on the lattice strain model and also requires analysis of REE in both apatite and basalt. This calibration is defined by ( Eu E u * ) D lattice strain = 1 1 + 10 - 0.20 ± 0.03 × l o g ⁡ ( f o 2 ) - 3.03 ± 0.42 . The Eu valence-state partitioning techniques based on (Sm×Gd) and lattice strain are virtually indistinguishable, such that either methodology is valid. Application of any of these calibrations is best carried out in systems where both apatite and coexisting glass are present and in direct contact with one another. In holocrystalline rocks, whole rock analyses can be used as a guide to melt composition, but considerations and corrections must be made to either the lattice strain or Sm×Gd techniques to ensure that the effect of plagioclase crystallization either prior to or during apatite growth can be removed. Similarly, if the melt source has an inherited either a positive or negative Eu anomaly, appropriate corrections must also be made to lattice strain or Sm×Gd techniques that are based on whole rock analyses. This being the case, if apatite is primary and saturates from the parent melt early during the crystallization sequence, these corrections may be minimal. The partition coefficients for the REE between apatite and melt range from a maximum DEu3+ = 1.67 ± 0.25 (as determined by lattice strain) to DLu3+ = 0.69 ± 0.10. The REE partition coefficient pattern, as observed in the Onuma diagram, is in a fortuitous situation where the most compatible REE (Eu3+) is also the polyvalent element used to monitor fO2. These experiments provide a quantitative means of assessing Eu anomalies in apatite and how they be used to constrain the oxygen fugacity of silicate melts.

Crossed grid anode and its image partitioning

Measurements on an imaging crossed grid anode following a pair of microchannel plates indicate fast charge propagation via wire-to-wire capacitances, suggesting a temporal resolution of 100 ns. A figure of merit for partitioned systems has been suggested that provides an estimate of the position uncertainty of photoelectrons in the image plane of an anode. Solutions for two-, three-, and four-amplifier position algorithms are given, and basic system requirements are discussed.

A scheme for parameterizing cirrus cloud ice water content in general circulation models

Clouds strongly influence th earth's energy budget. They control th amount of solar radiative energy absorbed by the climate system, partitioning the energy between the atmosphere and the earth's surface. They also control the loss of energy to space by their effect on thermal emission. Cirrus and altostratus are the most frequent cloud types, having an annual average global coverage of 35 and 40 percent, respectively. Cirrus is composed almost entirely of ice crystals and the same is frequently true of the upper portions of altostratus since they are often formed by the thickening of cirrostratus and by the spreading of the middle or upper portions of thunderstorms. Thus, since ice clouds cover such a large portion of the earth's surface, they almost certainly have an important effect on climate. With this recognition, researchers developing climate models are seeking largely unavailable methods for specifying the conditions for ice cloud formation, and quantifying the spatial distribution of ice water content, IWC, a necessary step in deriving their radiative characteristics since radiative properties are apparently related to IWC. A method is developed for specifying IWC in climate models, based on theory and measurements in cirrus during FIRE and other experiments.

JTEC Panel report on microelectromechanical systems in Japan

This report summarizes recent activities in the development of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) in Japan. For the purposes of this study, 'MEMS' means batch-fabricated miniature devices that convert physical parameters to or from electrical signals and that depend on mechanical structures or parameters in important ways for their operation. The report covers advanced materials and process technology; sensors and sensing microstructures; microactuators and actuation mechanisms; sensor-circuit integration and system partitioning; advanced packaging, microassembly, and testing technologies; and MEMS design techniques, applications, and infrastructure. The panel found that Japanese industry is emphasizing approaches to MEMS that are similar to those taken by U.S. industry (i.e., approaches based on silicon integrated-circuit technology); these efforts are comparable in their level of development to those in the United States. However, the ten-year, $250 million, MITI-sponsored program in micromachines emphasizes the miniaturization of more traditional (nonlithographic) machining processes, an area in which there is no comparable U.S. effort. Packaging technology and applications for batch-fabricated MEMS devices is considered a major challenge in both countries. The panel concluded that these and other issues will require global leadership and international cooperation to realize the benefits of MEMS in a timely way.

Experimental investigations of trace element fractionation in iron meteorites. III - Elemental partitioning in the system Fe-Ni-S-P

Measurements of solid metal/liquid metal trace element partition coefficients, which are used to interpret the crystallization history of magmatic iron meteorite groups differ greatly between different research groups, using different experimental techniques. Specifically, partition coefficients measured utilizing 'static' experiments which approach equilibrium cannot be reconciled with the results of 'dynamic' experiments which mimic fractional crystallization. We report new tests of our 'static' experimental technique and demonstrate that our methodology yields reliable equilibrium values for Ni, P and Ge partition coefficients. Partition coefficients in the Fe-Ni-S-P system are well matched by interpolation between the Fe-Ni-S and Fe-Ni-P subsystems. In contrast, the predictions of 'dynamic' experiments do not agree with our measurements and, consequently, the ability of 'dynamic' experiments to reproduce iron meteorite Ge vs. Ni fractionation trends successfully must be regarded as fortuitous.
