Healthy Buildings Guide for Small Businesses: A Quick Reference to Improve Indoor Air Quality (Restaurants Excluded)

Indoor air pollutant concentrations can be higher than those outdoors, putting occupants at risk. These pollutants come from a variety of sources: materials used to build and furnish indoor spaces, retail products and services, and occupants themselves. Ventilation, temperature, and humidity also affect indoor air quality. It is important to consider the documented benefits of healthy indoor environments at any time – not just during a public health crisis – and it is key to consider the indoor air quality where we do business as well as at home. Small businesses vary in size, services, products, ownership style, and building mechanical systems, yet all benefit from healthy indoor spaces for employees and customers. This guide provides steps, in conjunction with public health guidance, that small businesses can take to improve and maintain indoor air quality. Small businesses often have unique ownership structures – the building owner and business owner can be different parties – so this guide addresses both building and business owner action items. There are many ways to pursue healthy indoor air, including eliminating, minimizing, and/or controlling the contaminants we bring in, and removing or diluting any existing contaminants through ventilation, filtration, air cleaning, and/or disinfection. Best results are achieved through a comprehensive approach combining various strategies, including those discussed in this guide.

Advancing Small Business Solar Equity: Final Technical Insights Report

The Advancing Small Business Solar Equity: Final Technical Insights Report represents the culmination of two years of work in participation with Round 3 of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory's Solar Energy Innovation Network (SEIN). SEIN Round 3, titled "Equitable Solar in Underserved Communities," supported eight underserved communities across the United States in "exploring new approaches to the equitable adoption of solar energy in residential and commercial-scale settings" and in "confronting the solar barriers they face and unlocking the solar benefits most relevant to their own contexts" (National Renewable Energy Laboratory 2023). This project was one of four selected to support solar access for commercial entities in underserved communities. The research conducted for this report was done within the Minnesota Twin Cities geographic context, but certain findings and the proposed Solar Hub Network model may be found applicable nationally. Community-based organizations that serve small businesses, chambers of commerce, community development finance institutions and other community lenders, municipal governments, solar incentive providers, solar industry professionals, and others may find elements of this report useful.

Distributed Wind Guidebook: Agricultural Producers and Rural Small Business Owners

Distributed wind energy technologies generate clean, carbon-free power close to the point of consumption (i.e., close to people and their energy needs). Distributed wind energy can help individuals, farms, businesses, and communities meet their unique goals, such as reducing impacts on climate change, decreasing electricity bills, boosting energy independence or autonomy from the electric grid, and enhancing grid reliability and resilience. This guidebook is designed to support you in (1) deciding if distributed wind energy is right for you, (2) installing a proven wind turbine technology by working with a reputable installer, and (3) setting up your project for success through its lifetime. The information in this guidebook is tailored to rural small businesses and agricultural producers who are interested in exploring distributed wind energy to meet their electricity, resilience, financial, and environmental goals. You will find gray boxes with key topics, definitions, and considerations throughout the guidebook. The report has been adapted from the Distributed Wind Guidebook, which offers a comprehensive view on core aspects of deploying distributed wind energy technologies. In comparison, this edition of the guidebook is designed to offer a more succinct and tailored guidebook for rural small businesses and agricultural producers. For additional detail on any topic presented within this edition, readers are advised to reference the original version of the Distributed Wind Guidebook.

Survey on Efficient and Productive Use of Electricity In Women-Run Small Businesses in Uganda

In Uganda, women make up a large portion of the service sector, notably in informal small and micro businesses such as retail shops, food preparation, tailoring, sewing, beer brewing, basket weaving, healthcare, and hairdressing. Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), and USAID, in partnership with the Clean Energy Enthusiasts (CEE), a local implementer in Uganda, designed and conducted a participatory survey to collect baseline data and information on the current state of benefits to energy access. The study included data on the uptake of efficient and productive electric (EPUE) equipment, business skills, and financial needs among small and mid-size women-led businesses in Uganda. The objective of the survey was to build evidence and identify economic activities where access to electricity has a positive impact on women’s empowerment by helping them develop new and existing businesses, improve productivity, and increase their income. The survey included questions about the type of electric equipment used and needed, electric consumption patterns, alternative sources to electricity, and business and capital barriers related to increased access. The survey results provided the basis for designing a training program tailored to the need of women entrepreneurs in the region.

Small Business Voucher Program: Scaling-Up of Bio-Based C5 Building Block Production: Cooperative Research and Development Final Report, CRADA Number CRD-16-00611

Visolis, Inc. is an early stage industrial biotechnology company developing next generation of processes for producing building blocks for bulk polymers and fuels. The company is developing low-cost routes to the chemicals of the future in support of DOE, EERE and BETO goals to grow the U.S. bioeconomy. NREL has capabilities in scale-up of fermentation processes from bench top through pilot scales and also has expertise and technologies related to production of lignocellulosic sugars from cellulosic feedstocks. NREL's Integrated Biorefinery Research Facility (IBRF) houses multiple fermentation vessels/systems ranging in size from 0.5 to 9,000 L along with ancillary capabilities in compositional analysis, separations, and purification. NREL's role will be to scale-up the Visolis process to produce an intermediate product, mevalonic acid, from both dextrose and biomass derived sugars. The goals of the project are to: 1) transfer and reproduce one of Visolis's proprietary fermentation processes at bench top and pilot scale at NREL's IBRF using dextrose as the feedstock, 2) carry out bench-scale fermentations using Visolis's organism and cellulosic sugars, and 3) produce mevalonic acid from the bench top and pilot scale runs for catalyst lifetime testing and conversion to isoprene.

The Building Business Network (B-Biz): Addressing Gaps in the High-Performance Building Technology Market, Especially for Underserved Customers

Increased market intelligence and business model innovation is needed to build contractor confidence in high-performance building technologies in order to increase the speed and scale of adoption to meet the U.S. Department of Energy's building stock decarbonization goals. Although there have been important innovations in energy efficiency, affordability, and decarbonization of building technologies, consumers are not purchasing these technologies at the necessary speed and scale partially due to a gap in institutional understanding around barriers contractors face in providing and servicing these technologies. Small businesses in this market must mitigate risk around high-performance building technologies, limiting their opportunities in the market and impacting the rate of adoption. The Building Business Network (B-Biz) aims to provide high-performance building technology solutions to underserved customers by collaborating with local small businesses that provide and service high-performance building technologies in communities with the lowest rates of adoption. This research explores the current market, the importance of business models, and the opportunity to utilize small businesses to address market gaps in underserved communities.
