Thermal Neutron Scattering Law for Beryllium Hydride and Critical Mass Calculations [Slides]

TSLs for H(BeH 2 ) and Be(BeH 2 ) were evaluated in the incoherent approximation using FLASSH. Minimum critical mass estimates were performed using MC21 continuous energy Monte Carlo calculations with the BeH 2 TSLs. Researchers confirmed very low estimated critical mass for BeH 2 -moderated and Be- reflected spheres. These were the lowest critical masses NNL has studied to date. Future work includes relaxation of the incoherent approximation for Be(BeH 2 ). A small increase in critical mass is expected due to increased neutron transmission at sub-Bragg cutoff energies.

Extending Analysis of Asay Windows to High Areal Mass Range [Slides]

The accretion layer addition to Asay window analysis results in new equations of motion that depend on the location of collisions within the layer. Asay window equations of motion can be represented in terms of experiment observables. Balance of linear momentum for variable mass systems provides a framework for developing equations of motion for Asay window diagnostics under a variety of operating assumptions. The growth in the accretion layer thickness during an experiment substantially influences mass and density measurements when high accumulation of areal mass is present.

Thermal Neutron Scattering Law Evaluations for Zirconium Carbide and Critical Mass Calculations [Slides]

Zirconium Carbide (ZrC) is a refractory material currently being investigated for high temperature reactor applications. ZrC was studied as a base of (U,Zr)C solid solution and UC 2 composite fuels for NERVA-type cores during the Rover program. Testing of the material was performed at Nuclear Furnace 1 (NF-1) located at Los Alamos. Thermal Scattering Law (TSL) evaluations generated with FLASSH are a new contribution to ENDF/B-VIII.1.

A Robust Assessment of High-Precision Plutonium Isotopic Analysis by Thermal Ionization Mass Spectrometry [Slides]

TIMS at SRNL • SRNL consolidated analytical laboratories and services into one area – loss of TIMS capability during relocation. • SRNL installed a new Thermo Scientific TRITON Plus TIMS in our Category II Nuclear Facility to re-establish the lab’s TIMS capabilities in Feb. 2024. • Allows for handling, preparation, purification, and analysis of high-level radiological materials within a single location • Pu and U isotopic composition and assay measurement qualification have been priority since installation. • Once the instrument has been qualified, this capability will support internal and external customers.

Internal Reaction Mass Taxonomy and Narrow-Down Study

Internal reaction mass (IRM) wave energy converters (WEC) capture wave energy by reacting against a moving mass that is suspended within their hulls. Due to their hermetically sealed Power Take Off (PTO), compact form factor and relatively simple mooring requirements, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory has identified IRM WECs are good candidates for applications such as ocean observation. A literature review of existing IRM mechanisms lead to the classification of IRM WECs based on their principal method of energy capture and principal axes of operation. The IRM categories include sliding mass, pendular and gyroscopic devices. A narrow down study was conducted to ascertain the most promising mechanisms for further investigation; devices were evaluated based on a decision matrix of weighted criteria that included device power output, prototypability and power to mass ratio. The narrow down study identified the issue of achieving resonance with pendulum-based designs, as well as the poor response produced by reaction to long period waves. Chaotic pendula and methods to multiply agitation were identified as a means to increase power output. Alternative methods of power generation, such as triboelectric nanogenerators, were also identified as a technology that would benefit from multiplied agitation and chaotic motion. This work was funded under the U.S. Department of Energy's Water Power Technologies Office's Powering the Blue Economy portfolio.

How to measure the W Mass: A Theory Perspective [Slides]

CDF used ResBos code at NNLL+NLO accuracy. ResBos v2 is able to go to N 3 LL+NNLO accuracy. ResBos2 corrected major criticism of incorrect angular functions in the ResBos code. Mimic CDF analysis using pseudoexperiments at N 3 LL+NNLO accuracy. We report find shift to be consistent with 0 MeV and up to 10 MeV in worse case.

Evolution of the Antarctic Ice Sheet from 2000–2300 and beyond: model sensitivity and uncertainty analysis using MPAS-Albany Land Ice

We present a description of the Antarctic Ice Sheet model configuration submitted to the ISMIP6-Antarctica-2300 experiment using the MPAS-Albany Land Ice model, along with three new sets of simulations: (1) a set of extended simulations to 2500 for three forced experiments and to 2775 for the control experiment; (2) a sensitivity analysis of our model configuration to parameters controlling basal sliding and sub-shelf melt, and to model structural choices including the choice of the energy and stress balances; and (3) a 72-member ensemble run on graphics processing units (GPUs) and analysis of variance to determine the primary sources of uncertainty in our ice-sheet model projections. Our extended simulations predict rapid retreat beginning after 2300 for SSP1-2.6 forcing and after 2500 for present-day (control) forcing, primarily in the Amundsen Sea Embayment. We find that varying the sub-shelf melt parameter between the 5th to 95th percentile values for a mean-Antarctic calibration target results in an up to ∼ ± 40 % change in sea-level contribution relative to our baseline simulations that used the median value. Using a linear basal sliding law reduces sea-level contribution by 51 %–73 % relative to our baseline nonlinear sliding law with an exponent of 1/5. When using basal sliding law exponents of 1/3 and 1/10, the overall difference from our baseline simulations at 2300 is on the order of 10 %. The Amundsen Sea Embayment region displays a strongly non-linear dependence of mass loss on the sliding law exponent, with no discernible relationship between the sliding law exponent and the mass loss by 2300, while the sectors feeding the Ross and Filchner-Ronne ice shelves exhibit more mass loss with a more-plastic sliding law. Our model fidelity sensitivity experiments reveal a 9 %–31 % increase in sea-level contribution when using a depth-integrated stress balance approximation relative to our three-dimensional solver, while using a fixed-in-time temperature field increases sea-level contribution by 14 %–88 % relative to two thermomechanically coupled configurations. Our 72-member ensemble and analysis of variance show that the uncertainty in long-term projections is dominated by the choice of Earth system model forcing and the presence or absence of hydrofracture forcing, rather than uncertainty in sliding and sub-shelf melt parameters.

Comparative Critical Mass Calculations for NNL and ENDF/B-VIII.0 Zirconium Hydride Thermal Scattering Laws [Slides]

Zirconium Hydride (ZrH x ) is a moderator material for TRIGA reactors and SNAP-10A.The thermal scattering has the behavior of quantum oscillator favorable for moderator feedback. ZrH x occurs as a corrosion product in LWR. Previously new phase specific TSL evaluations were generated and submitted to ENDF/B- VIII.1. These include the effects of crystal structure on elastic scattering of Zr(ZrH x ), permit flexibility in stoichiometry for use in reactor physics calculations and fuel characterization, and expand the TSL material sub-library. ENDF/B-VIII.0 ZrH TSLs do not distinguish between material phase. Current work involves preliminary validation & verification testing on the effect of TSLs on critical mass and associated thermal flux.
