Welcome to the online RCT Continuing Training. This quarter’s topic will review the fundamental elements of radioactive material control and releasing items from controlled areas to include: evaluation if an item may be released and the actions necessary to perform a release from a controlled area.
Nanoindentation Continuous Stiffness Measurement (CSM) mapping, and Strain Rate Jump Testing (SRJT) proved effective to highlight and visualize the extent of property differences between the samples. From the analysis, Lot A has a significant dead zone at its center, especially when compared with the cross section of Lot B. Quick identification of property issues from one of the two feed stocks, both of which fit the specification. Mechanical performance was connected to the microstructure. Thus, using the structure-property results, it is noted that the processing of Lot A may have been insufficient. Nanoindentation allows for the sampling of quality control variables such as hardness and modulus in a short time span at high resolution, which is cheaper and faster than traditional strength experiments (tension and compression tests).

The use of robots is important, to help prevent people from being exposed to hazardous materials within a glovebox. The research proposal for the summer was to make a pick and place demo for a seven degrees-of-freedom Motoman Sia5d robot. The Robot Operating System (ROS) was used and the knowledge of C++ and Linux had to be applied. The robot was used to pick up and sort four objects (cylinder, sphere, rectangular prism, and cone) within a virtual environment.
Nuclear forensics is the collection and analysis of nuclear or radiological material to support investigations into the diversion, trafficking, or illicit activities involving materials. The goal is to link nuclear or radioactive material to people, processes, events and/or locations.
No prior enabling funded work applicable to this proposal. Programming Protocol-independent Packet Processors (P4) is an open source, domain-specific programming language for network switching devices. P4 complements traditional Software Defined Networking (SDN) which is primarily concerned with the management of packets (e.g. routing/dropping decisions) rather than how each packet is processed. The introduction of P4 provided new capabilities (e.g. firewall, load balancing, enhanced security) but has primarily been deployed in data centers. This effort investigates ways to expand P4 into other niches such as ICS networks.
This module presents an operational scenario to illustrate the NMAC functions that are recommended for nuclear security. After completing this module, participants should be able to: 1) Describe the role NMAC plays in implementing recommended nuclear security practices. 2) Discuss the coordination between other departments during a primarily NMAC operation.

Artificial muscles (AMs) typically rely on pneumatic sources of fluid power. The use of hydraulics can increase the power and force to weight and volume ratios of AM actuators. This paper develops a control-centric third-order single-input single-output (SISO) lumped-parameter dynamic model and sliding mode position controller based on Filippov's principle of equivalent dynamics for a braided hydraulic artificial muscle (HAM) actuator. The model predicts the nonlinear behavior of the HAM free contraction and captures the fluid and actuator nonlinear dynamic interactions in addition to the braid deformation. Model simulations are compared to experimental results for quasi-static pressurization, isometric pressurization, and open-loop square wave commands at 0.25, 0.5, and 1 Hz. Experiments of sine wave tracking at 0.25, 0.5, and 1 Hz and continuous square wave tracking at 0.067 Hz are conducted using a sliding mode controller (SMC) derived from the model. The SMC achieves a steady-state error of 6 μm at multiple setpoints within the actuator's 17 mm stroke. Compared to a proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller, the SMC root-mean-square (RMS) error, mean error, and absolute maximum error are reduced on average by 53%, 61%, and 44%, respectively, demonstrating the benefit of model-based approaches for controlling HAMs.
A new methodology for adaptive sliding mode control (ASMC) has been widely used to improve the control performance in various systems. This method exhibits several advantages, including low sliding mode control (SMC) chattering, no knowledge of the system disturbance bound, and no overestimation of the control gain. Despite its advantages, this method can be hampered by the spike phenomenon, slow control gain convergence, and difficulty in achieving optimal performance under varying disturbances. Consequently, this article proposes a spike-free ASMC method with a disturbance observer (DOB) to address these problems. Previous ASMC methods have been analyzed via simulations to verify the aforementioned problems. Here, this analysis highlights the need for disturbance compensation and improvements in the SMC gain adaptation law. Therefore, a DOB is designed to mitigate the spike phenomenon by compensating for disturbances. Subsequently, an SMC gain adaptation law based on disturbance error estimation is designed to eliminate the spike phenomenon completely. The proposed adaptation law makes the SMC gain to converge to a slightly higher value than the disturbance estimation error. Consequently, the proposed method not only eliminates the spike phenomenon, but also ensures optimal performance under varying disturbances. The performance of the proposed method is experimen tally validated through a comparative study.

Control of laser-plasma instabilities (LPI) is critical for inertial fusion. Future stockpile stewardship experiments on the NIF will require increased fusion yield (up to 10 MJ), which will require higher laser energy and intensity and will have a higher LPI risk. To be successful, we need to understand the nonlinear behavior of LPI and develop an improved capability for modeling and mitigating LPI in ICF experiments.
The presentation discusses what is involved in having radiation control as a career.
This report provides past and present information about LANL, as well as details about opportunities in the finance and controller divisions.
