Short-range correlations in carbon-12, oxygen-16, and neon-20: Intrinsic properties

The Brueckner-Hartree-Fock (BHF) method has been applied to nuclei whose intrinsic structure is nonspherical. Reaction matrix elements were calculated as functions of starting energy for the Hamada-Johnston interaction using the Pauli operator appropriate to O-16 and a shifted oscillator spectrum for virtual excited states. Binding energies, single particle energies, radii, and shape deformations of the intrinsic state, in ordinary as well as renormalized BHF, are discussed and compared with previous HF studies and with experiment when possible. Results are presented for C-12, 0-16 and Ne-20. It is found that the binding energies and radii are too small, but that separation energies are well reproduced when the renormalized theory is used.

Effects of Nose Bluntness on Aerodynamic Characteristics of Cruciform-Finned Missile Configuration at Mach 1.50 to 2.86

An investigation has been conducted in the Langley Unitary Plan wind tunnel to determine the effects of spherical nose bluntness on the aerodynamic characteristics of a typical cruciform-finned short-range missile configuration for roll angles of 0 deg and 45 deg and Mach numbers from 1.50 to 2.86. Also investigated was the effectiveness of a forward protruding nose spike in reducing the axial-force coefficient of a blunt-nose configuration. The results indicated that the effects of nose bluntness and nose spike on the longitudinal stability were small. For roll angles of both 0 deg and 45 deg, the greatest effects of nose bluntness on the aerodynamic-center location near zero angle of attack occurred at a Mach number of 2.86, where for each roll position, a rearward shift of approximately 3.5 percent of the body length occurred as bluntness was increased. Although large magnitudes of nose bluntness were accompanied by high axial-force coefficients, significant reductions in the axial-force coefficient of a blunt-nose configuration were achieved with the use of the nose spike. There were no noteworthy effects of nose bluntness on either the directional stability or side-force parameters. However, for high angles of attack at a Mach number of 1.50 increased nose bluntness generally resulted in decreased effective dihedral.

Study of aircraft in intraurban transportation systems

A systems analysis was conducted to define the technical economic and operational characteristics of an aircraft transportation system for short-range intracity commutor operations. The analysis was for 1975 and 1985 in the seven county, Detroit, Michigan area. STOL and VTOL aircraft were studied in sizes from 40 to 120 passengers. The preferred vehicle for the Detroit area was the deflected slipstream STOL. Since the study was parametric in nature, it is applicable to generalization, and it was concluded that a feasible intraurban air transportation system could be developed in many viable situations.

Heuristic theory of positron-helium scattering.

An error in a previous modified adiabatic approximation (Drachman, 1966), due to a lack of generality in the form of the short-range correlation part of the wave function for L greater than zero, is corrected heuristically by allowing the monopole suppression parameter to depend on L. An L-dependent local potential is constructed to fit the well-known positron-hydrogen s, p, and d wave phase shifts below the rearrangement threshold. The same form of potential yields a positron-helium cross-section in agreement with a recent experimental measurement near threshold.

Science, society and the space program.

Exposition of the contributions the space program can make toward improving the quality of life. The contribution involves both short-range application of space technology and the long-range search for knowledge. Large land areas can be surveyed from spacecraft to determine not only whether land is tillable, but what kind of crops will flourish. The space communications program can reach many millions of people more economically than other methods. The long-range aspects are concerned with the effect of modification of the environment.

Laser ranging system with 1-cm resolution.

A laser ranging system has been developed in which an image converter tube equipped with deflection plates is used to make a precise measurement of the fractional amount by which the time of flight of the ranging pulse exceeds an integral multiple N of the period of a stable oscillator. The value of N is determined in an auxiliary measurement. In short-range tests with a laboratory breadboard version of the system, time-of-flight uncertainties of about 45 psec were observed. The corresponding uncertainty in a range measurement is smaller than 7 mm.

Mesoscale history of a small patch of clear air turbulence.

Sequential analyses of data from a network of eight special rawinsonde stations 100 km apart demonstrate the important effects of mesoscale disturbances in a 2.5-hr episode of light-to-moderate clear air turbulence (CAT). The most significant feature was the development of two turbulent fields below and above a 2-km region of a wind minimum which passed over Wallops Island, Va., near 1530 GMT on Feb. 4, 1970. The small scale of these features precludes their detection in the standard 12-hr observation sequence. The rawinsonde network utilized, which incorporates fine-scale details in both space and time, is adequate to provide a very useful current CAT depiction and an excellent source for the preparation of a short-range forecast of CAT.

Shock-induced transition of quartz to stishovite.

The transformation of quartz to stishovite has been studied by X-ray and optical examination of a series of experimentally shock-loaded specimens of a quartz-copper mixture. Shock pressures of 68 to 260 kb and peak temperatures of 320 to 870 K were achieved. Stishovite was identified from quartz shock-loaded above 90 kb; the quantity increases with increasing pressure, but is not dependent on temperature. The formation of stishovite under shock conditions appears to be intimately related to a short-range order phase.

A simplified fuel control approach for low-cost aircraft gas turbines

A hydromechanical approach to the problem of reducing the compexity and cost of turbine fuel controls without impairing performance and reliability is described and analyzed. The study applies to the modification of long-range high-performance turbine engines to meet short-range missile requirements. The generalized acceleration and deceleration control parameters are studied, and variable-orifice relations for acceleration and deceleration limits are derived. The hydromechanical speed-sensing and multiplying circuit and the fuel control schematic diagram are discussed.

Amorphous magnetism in f.c.c. Vicalloy II

The results of magnetization and Mossbauer experiments are described which give evidence for superparamagnetism in the quenched face-centered-cubic (gamma) phase of the ternary system Fe .34, C .52, V .14 (Vicalloy II). Magnetometer data are given which clearly show that splat-cooled Vicalloy II does not exhibit long-range magnetic order. These data together with the Mossbauer data indicate that short-range magnetic ordering occurs which is temperature-dependent with coalescence of magnetic clusters over a limited temperature range. The model presented reasonably accounts for the observed effects and indicates that this ternary system is superparamagnetic down to 4.2 K.

Ground state properties of spin-alined atomic hydrogen

Theoretical calculation of the ground state properties of spin-alined atomic hydrogen by the Monte Carlo method. The interatomic interaction, as described by the results of Kolos and Wolniewicz (1965), is made fit to a Morse potential form. An appropriate trail wavefunction is formed from the short-range part of the WKB solution for a pair of atoms interacting through a Morse potential.

Comment on determination of the interaction potential between Ar and HCl

To test the accuracy of the Gordon-Kim theory of intermolecular forces, predicted and experimental values are compared for Ar-HCl. The method appears to accurately predict the short-range repulsive forces and also the position (but possibly not the depth) of the potential well.

A preliminary study of a propeller powered by gas jets issuing from the blade tips

Computations are made of the performance of a propeller designed to develop 56 thrust horsepower at 100 miles per hour. The fuel consumption of the jet-operated propeller would be considerably higher than that of a reciprocating engine and a propeller. The lighter weight of the jet-operated propeller will result in a lighter weight of engine plus fuel for short-range flights. A theoretical analysis is made of a propeller powered by gas jets issuing from the blade tips. In the propeller considered, the air is drawn through the hub and passes through the hollow propeller blades to the tips, where propellers heat the air and expel it through the nozzles in the blade tips. The reaction of the tips rotates the propeller. For long range flights, the weight of the jet-operated propeller with its fuel would be greater than the weight of a reciprocating engine with its propeller and fuel.
