Improved Efficiency Type II Second Harmonic Generation

Second harmonic efficiency is limited by lateral and temporal separation of the ordinary and extraordinary components of the fundamental. A mode locked dual beam laser demonstrated these effects and a novel method to minimize them.

Unexpected symmetry breaking in ferroelectric wurtzite thin films on silicon observed by optical second harmonic generation

Optical second harmonic generation (SHG) exists as a popular tool for probing materials with broken inversion symmetry in the physical and biological sciences. SHG polarimetry can reveal material anisotropy with high sensitivity, including point group and phase transitions. Here, we probe ferroelectric wurtzite films with a nominal 6 mm symmetry under a normal reflection geometry using SHG microscopy and discover an unexpected symmetry breaking. Symmetry considerations would normally forbid the detection of the SHG signal when light propagates along the polar 6-fold rotation axis. Yet a uniquely anisotropic SHG response is observed in this geometry in Al 1-x B x N, Al 1-x Sc x N, Zn 1-x Mg x O, and AlN/Al 1-x Sc x N heterostructures grown on silicon that can be modeled by an average monoclinic symmetry of point group m. A significant enhancement of the SHG signal corresponding to up to a 5.3× increase in the SHG intensity (hence ∼2.3 × in effective SHG tensor coefficient) is observed at antiparallel polar domain walls, suggesting local cooperative alignment of symmetry-breaking structural distortions. Namely, it is found that the monoclinic mirror plane is oriented predominantly perpendicular to the walls. Such increases in domain wall SHG thus reveal that subtle symmetry breaking can be a pathway to large property enhancements.

Computationally-driven discovery of second harmonic generation in EuBa 3 (B 3 O 6 ) 3 through inversion symmetry breaking

Nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals with superior properties are significant for advancing laser technologies and applications. Introducing rare earth metals to borates is a promising and effective way to modify the electronic structure of a crystal to improve its optical properties in the visible and ultraviolet range. In this work, we computationally discover inversion symmetry breaking in EuBa 3 (B 3 O 6 ) 3 , which was previously identified as centric, and demonstrate noncentrosymmetry via synthesizing single crystals for the first time by the floating zone method. We determine the correct space group to be P 6¯. The material has a large direct bandgap of 5.56 eV and is transparent down to 250 nm. The complete anisotropic linear and nonlinear optical properties were also investigated with a d 11 of ∼0.52 pm/V for optical second harmonic generation. Further, it is Type I and Type II phase matchable. This work suggests that rare earth metal borates are an excellent crystal family for exploring future deep ultraviolet (DUV) NLO crystals. It also highlights how first principles computations combined with experiments can be used to identify noncentrosymmetric materials that have been wrongly assigned to be centrosymmetric.

Giant electric field-induced second harmonic generation in polar skyrmions

Electric field-induced second harmonic generation allows electrically controlling nonlinear light-matter interactions crucial for emerging integrated photonics applications. Despite its wide presence in materials, the figures-of-merit of electric field-induced second harmonic generation are yet to be elevated to enable novel device functionalities. Here, we show that the polar skyrmions, a topological phase spontaneously formed in PbTiO3/SrTiO3 ferroelectric superlattices, exhibit a high comprehensive electric field-induced second harmonic generation performance. The second-order nonlinear susceptibility and modulation depth, measured under non-resonant 800 nm excitation, reach ~54.2 pm V −1 and ~664% V −1 , respectively, and high response bandwidth (higher than 10 MHz), wide operating temperature range (up to ~400 K) and good fatigue resistance (>10 10 cycles) are also demonstrated. Through combined in-situ experiments and phase-field simulations, we establish the microscopic links between the exotic polarization configuration and field-induced transition paths of the skyrmions and their electric field-induced second harmonic generation response. Our study not only presents a highly competitive thin-film material ready for constructing on-chip devices, but opens up new avenues of utilizing topological polar structures in the fields of photonics and optoelectronics.

Symmetric second-harmonic generation in sub-wavelength periodically poled thin film lithium niobate

Second-harmonic generation (SHG) extensively employs periodically poled nonlinear crystals through forward quasi-phase-matching to achieve efficient frequency conversion. As poling periods approach sub-micrometers, backward quasi-phase-matching has also been demonstrated, albeit by utilizing pulsed laser drives. The realization of symmetric second-harmonic generation, characterized by counterpropagating pumps, however, has remained elusive despite theoretical predictions. The main challenge lies in achieving strong nonlinear coupling with the poling period below half the wavelength of the second-harmonic light. The recent emergence of high-quality ferroelectric lithium niobate thin films provides an opportunity for achieving precise domain control at submicron dimensions. In this paper, we demonstrate reliable control of ferroelectric domains in a thin film lithium niobate waveguide with a poling period down to 370 nm, thereby realizing highly efficient continuous-wave pumped symmetric SHG. This demonstration not only validates the feasibility of achieving subwavelength periodic poling on waveguides but could also enable submicron ferrolectric domain structures to be leveraged in integrated photonics and nonlinear optics research.

Analytical and numerical modeling of optical second harmonic generation in anisotropic crystals using #SHAARP package

Electric-dipole optical second harmonic generation (SHG) is a second-order nonlinear process that is widely used as a sensitive probe to detect broken inversion symmetry and local polar order. Analytical modeling of the SHG polarimetry of a nonlinear optical material is essential to extract its point group symmetry and the absolute nonlinear susceptibilities. Current literature on SHG analysis involves numerous approximations and a wide range of (in)accuracies. We have developed an open-source package called the Second Harmonic Analysis of Anisotropic Rotational Polarimetry (#SHAARP.si) which derives analytical and numerical solutions of reflection SHG polarimetry from a single interface (.si) for bulk homogeneous crystals with arbitrary symmetry group, arbitrary crystal orientation, complex and anisotropic linear dielectric tensor with frequency dispersion, a general SHG tensor and arbitrary light polarization. #SHAARP.si enables accurate modeling of polarimetry measurements in reflection geometry from highly absorbing crystals or wedge-shaped transparent crystals. The package is extendable to multiple interfaces.

Generalized analytical and numerical modeling of optical second harmonic generation in anisotropic crystals and complex heterostructures using #SHAARP package

Optical second harmonic generation (SHG) is a nonlinear optical effect widely used for nonlinear optical microscopy and laser frequency conversion. The closed-form analytical solution of the nonlinear optical responses is essential for evaluating the optical responses of new materials whose optical properties are unknown a priori. Many approximations have therefore been employed in the existing analytical approaches, such as slowly varying approximation, weak reflection of the nonlinear polarization, transparent medium, high crystallographic symmetry, Kleinman symmetry, easy crystal orientation along a high-symmetry direction, phase matching conditions and negligible interference among nonlinear waves, which may lead to large errors in the reported material properties. To avoid these approximations, here we have developed an open-source package named Second Harmonic Analysis of Anisotropic Rotational Polarimetry (#SHAARP) for single interface (si) and in multilayers (ml) for homogeneous crystals. The reliability and accuracy are established by experimentally benchmarking with both the SHG polarimetry and Maker fringes predicted from the package using standard materials. SHAARP.si and SHAARP.ml are available through GitHub https://github.com/Rui-Zu/SHAARP and https://github.com/bzw133/SHAARP.ml, respectively.

Single-shot local measurement of terahertz correlated second harmonic generation in laser air plasma filaments

We present a single-shot detection method of terahertz correlated second harmonic generation in plasma-based sources by directly mixing an optical probe into femtosecond laser-induced plasma filaments in air. Furthermore, the single-shot second harmonic trace is obtained by measuring a second harmonic generation on a conventional CCD with a spatiotemporally distorted probe beam. The system shows a spectrometer resolution of 22 fs/pixel on the CCD and a true resolution on the order of the probe pulse duration. With considerable THz peak electric field strength, this formalism can open the door to single-shot THz detection without bandwidth limitations.

Second Harmonic Generation Electric Field Triplet Interferometry for Absolute Phasing

We report second harmonic generation (SHG) electric field triplet interferometry performed using three mutually coherent ultrafast pulses in a common path with controllable relative phases, namely, the light fields of a sample signal (SI), a reference oscillator (RO), and a local oscillator (LO). The ROLO phase determined from the interference of the light fields produced by two quartz wafers is subtracted from the phase determined from the SIROLO interferogram to yield the signal phase, ϕ SI . The new method also calibrates the measured SHG intensity from a given sample internally by sending the fundamental light field reflected from the sample into one of the quartz wafers in the ROLO element. The approach avoids having to exchange the sample against a reference material with a known χ(2) value or known phase and accounts on-the-fly for situations where the reflected fundamental light field intensity changes with experimental conditions. The new method is successfully benchmarked against z-cut α-quartz, fused silica held at its point of zero charge, and hematite nanolayers in air, across three different interferometers. Furthermore, the approach should be applicable for other second-order nonlinear spectroscopies, such as vibrational or electronic sum-frequency generation.

Second harmonic generation for estimating state of charge of lithium-ion batteries

This study applied the nonlinear ultrasonic method, second harmonic generation, to precisely estimate the state of charge (SoC) in lithium-ion batteries. The second harmonic of the longitudinal wave is generated on a pouch cell battery at 5 MHz with a through-transmission setup. The relative nonlinear parameter β' is determined by analyzing the amplitudes at the fundamental and second harmonic frequencies. To enhance the nonlinear parameter's measurement accuracy, multiple excitation amplitudes are employed. Two separate charge/discharge tests (four-cycle and eight-cycle) are conducted on the battery at a rate of C/10. The nonlinear parameter is measured periodically during the charge/discharge process, and temperature compensation is applied to the measurement. The correlation curves between the nonlinear parameter and the actual SoC align well for the four-cycle and eight-cycle tests, and a robust linear relationship is observed for both correlation curves. A linear model and a second-order polynomial model are applied to fit the correlation using all data points from both tests. The two models are employed to validate the SoC prediction on a second battery by using a four-cycle test. Furthermore, the results indicate that both models can predict the SoC with an accuracy of approximately 3%, whereas the polynomial model demonstrates smaller errors in the regions near 0% and 100% SoC. Therefore, the nonlinear parameter β', measured through the second harmonic generation, can effectively predict lithium-ion battery SoC with an accuracy of less than 3%.

Second harmonic generation in topological insulators under quantizing magnetic fields

We theoretically investigate the second harmonic generation (SHG) of topological insulator surface states in a perpendicular magnetic field. Our theory is based on the microscopic expression of the second-order magneto-optical conductivity developed from the density matrix formalism, taking into account hexagonal warping effects on the surface states' band structure. Using numerically exact Landau-level energies and wave functions including hexagonal warping, we calculate the spectrum of SHG conductivities under normal incidence for different values of magnetic field and chemical potential. The imaginary parts of the SHG conductivities show prominent resonant peaks corresponding to one-photon and two-photon inter-Landau-level transitions. Treating the hexagonal warping term perturbatively, these transitions are clarified analytically within a perturbation theory from which approximate selection rules for the allowable optical transitions for SHG are determined. Furthermore, our results show extremely high SHG susceptibility that is easily tunable by magnetic field and doping level for topological surface states in the far-infrared regime, exceeding that of many conventional nonlinear materials. This work highlights the key role of hexagonal warping effects in generating second-order optical responses and provides insights into the nonlinear magneto-optical properties of the topological insulators.
