Grid Integration of Offshore Wind Power: Standards, Control, Power Quality and Transmission

Offshore wind is expected to be a major player in the global efforts toward decarbonization, leading to exceptional changes in modern power systems. Understanding the impacts and capabilities of the relatively new and uniquely positioned assets in grids with high integration levels of inverter-based resources, however, is lacking, raising concerns about grid reliability, stability, power quality, and resilience, with the absence of updated grid codes to guide the massive deployment of offshore wind. To help fill the gap, this paper presents an overview of the state-of-the-art technologies of offshore wind power grid integration. First, the paper investigates the most current grid requirements for wind power plant integration, based on a harmonized European Network of Transmission System Operators (ENTSO-E) framework and notable international standards, and it illuminates future directions. The paper discusses the wind turbine and wind power plant control strategies, and new control approaches, such as grid-forming control, are presented in detail. The paper reviews recent research on the ancillary services that offshore wind power plants can potentially provide, which, when harmonized, will not only comply with regulations but also improve the value of the asset. The paper explores topics of wind power plant harmonics, reviewing the latest standards in detail and outlining mitigation methods. The paper also presents stability analysis methods for wind power plants, with discussions centered on validity and computational efficiency. Finally, the paper discusses wind power plant transmission solutions, with a focus on high-voltage direct-current topologies and controls.

Design Power Control Strategies of Grid-Forming Inverters for Microgrid Application

This paper develops and compares two control schemes in the application control layer of a non-phase-locked loop (non-PLL) grid-forming (GFM) inverter to gain insight and understanding into how the two schemes affect the dynamic responses of GFM inverters and the transition operation of microgrids. The first scheme adopts power tracking based on an outer current loop in grid-connected mode and droop control in islanded mode, and the second uses droop control in both grid-connected and islanded modes. Analytical study is developed to compare the performance of these two strategies from various aspects, including fundamental differences, transition operation, power tracking, and P-Q capability with low point-of-common-coupling (PCC) voltages. Extensive simulation testing is carried out to validate the control performance of these two control strategies, and the simulation testing confirms the findings of the analytic study. Finally, the second strategy is recommended because of its superior control performance and ease of implementation. The analysis and results are useful in developing reliable control schemes for non-PLL GFM inverters because increasing numbers of inverters will work as non-PLL grid-forming sources in future grids because of their improved stability and reliability.

Characterization of Impedance and Stability for Doubly-Fed Induction Generator Based on Voltage-Modulated Direct Power Control

Voltage-modulated direct power control (VM-DPC) applied to the doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) offers superior steady-state and transient performance but remains underexplored for suppressing wideband oscillations. Here, this article proposes a comprehensive impedance for the VM-DPC-based DFIG, analyzing its impedance characteristics and stability mechanisms compared with the DFIG based on vector-oriented control (VOC). The unified power transfer function is defined for DFIGs employing VM-DPC or VOC to ensure consistent comparison benchmarks. The comprehensive impedance of VM-DPC-based DFIG, incorporating mechanical and grid-side converter (GSC) dynamics, is derived using complex vector modeling in the αβ -frame. Furthermore, the influence of VM-DPC parameters and grid strength on the stability of grid-connected DFIG systems is assessed through eigenvalue trajectory analysis. Impedance analysis reveals the significant contributions of mechanical and GSC dynamics to DFIG impedance, as well as the narrower frequency range of negative resistance in the VM-DPC-based DFIG compared to the VOC-based DFIG. Stability analysis identifies the VM-DPC parameters of the rotor-side converter as dominant factors affecting system stability and confirms that the VM-DPC-based DFIG achieves better stability under weak grid conditions than its VOC-based counterpart. These findings are validated through simulations and experiments.

Analysis of Transformer Magnetizing Reactance Using Describing Function in Direct Power Control of Back-to-Back Modular Multilevel Converter with Advanced Grid Support

This paper presents a Port Controlled Hamiltonian based direct power control architecture for a back-to-back modular multilevel converter system connecting two ac sources at different frequencies. The system features advanced grid support functionalities based on IEEE 1547-2018, implemented on the inverter side. The rectifier side controller ensures reference following for active and/or reactive powers and maintains the commanded dc bus voltage. The inverter side controller ensures power command following for active and reactive powers. The proposed control architecture is designed to suppress second harmonic oscillations in powers during unbalanced grid voltage sags by dynamically adjusting the currents on each ac side. This also ensures effective elimination of any second harmonic oscillations in the equivalent dc bus voltage. Validation is performed on an OPAL-RT real-time platform with case studies on unbalanced and balanced sags, demonstrating the controller's effectiveness during real time implementation. A reduced-scale laboratory prototype further verifies these case studies, with experimental results for balanced sags due to grid simulator limitations. The results confirm the robustness and efficiency of the proposed control strategy in ensuring stable and reliable operation under various grid conditions.

A Model-Reference Adaptive Direct-Power Control Scheme for Grid-Interactive Inverters

This paper develops an adaptive direct power control scheme for grid-interactive inverters while the control parameters are adaptively adjusted as the grid and filter parameters vary under different conditions. To demonstrate the efficacy and robustness of the adaptive operation, the performance of the adaptive controller is compared with a typical direct power controller by estimating the filter and grid impedances using a model reference parameter estimation technique with small signal injection. The simulation results verify that the developed methodology can track the reference power setpoints under output circuit parameter uncertainties while the typical design leads to instability. To improve the performance of the adaptive technique and eliminate the need for filter parameter estimation, a Lyapunov stability criterion-based model-reference adaptive direct power controller is designed to track the filter impedance. The developed method was tested using MATLAB/Simulink software to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. The results verify that adaptively tuning the control parameter can still maintain stable operation if the control gains are poorly selected while applying the classical method leads to abnormal operation or instability.

Direct Power Control of Back to Back Modular Multilevel Converter with Advanced Grid Support Functions for Grid Forming Application

Possibility of using back-to-back modular multilevel converter system with a direct power control architecture has been investigated in this paper. The rectifier side is controlled to be in grid following mode whereas the inverter side is controlled in grid forming mode. Both the sides’ local controllers use Lyapunov energy function based architecture to accomplish the objective of active and reactive power control as well as maintaining a fixed user defined voltage over the dc bus on the rectifier side. Therefore, the proposed direct power control architecture has embedded dc bus control architecture to maintain fixed user defined value of the capacitors. Similar architecture is implemented on the inverter side to accomplish either voltage control during grid forming or power control during grid following. Advanced grid support functionalities based on IEEE-1547-2018 is implemented and utilized to generate the reference values for either the rectifier or the inverter sides. The overall system is modeled based on MATLAB/Simulink and PLECS domain and various important case studies to verify the efficacy of the overall system has been presented.

Power Decoupling Method for Voltage Source Inverters Using Grid Voltage Modulated Direct Power Control in Unbalanced System

The grid voltage modulated direct power control (GVM-DPC) is a novel power regulation method for grid-connected voltage source inverters (VSI). However, interactions between real and reactive powers still exist in GVM-DPC under unbalanced grid voltage condition, which may deteriorate its transient performance. Here, this article proposes a power decoupling method for GVM-DPC-based VSI in unbalanced systems based on the dynamic feedforward power compensation strategy, which can reduce the coupling magnitudes of real and reactive powers in the transient stages. First, the power coupling mechanism of positive and negative sequence real and reactive powers of VSI under the unbalanced voltage condition is analyzed. Then, the power coupling magnitudes (PCM) are derived according to relationships among the positive sequence components of real power, reactive power and point of common coupling (PCC) voltages. Next, the PCM are compensated into the GVM-DPC for the better decoupling performance. Furthermore, a stability analysis of the proposed control system is studied based on the impedance model, and a comparison with the traditional power decoupling method based on virtual impedance is conducted to show the superiority of the proposed method. Finally, simulations, hardware-in-loop test and experiment are conducted to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Improving convergence of the Matrix Power Control Algorithm for random vibration testing

Herein, this paper describes modifications to the Matrix Power Control Algorithm (MPCA) to improve convergence for Random Vibration Control (RVC) testing. In particular, this paper presents Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) implementations of MPCA in simulation and experiment. An Euler–Bernoulli beam model was simulated with applied base excitations and the Box Assembly with Removable Component (BARC) was used in experiment to validate results. The Bayesian optimization package Dragonfly was used to optimize control parameters. Additionally, a moving-average was employed and optimized to improve the measured response feedback for MPCA, reduce the number of averages needed to be taken between control updates, and further improve convergence. The key results of this paper show that the performance of MPCA can be improved by tuning the control parameters and by applying an optimized moving-average. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that convergence can be achieved within 12 drive-frames, which greatly enhances vibration control capability.

Reactive Power Control Methods for Islanded Operation

As feeder-level microgrid controls begin to incorporate multiple GFM DER and voltage regulation equipment, island reactive power dispatch strategies can be improved. Although Volt-Var Optimization (VVO) control is typical in an Advanced Distribution Management System (ADMS), most microgrid controllers do not apply VVO during island operations. This report investigates reactive power control strategies for feeder-level microgrid operations. It also proposes evaluation metrics that can be applied to analyze the performance improvements of the new microgrid control strategy.

Consensus-Based Approach for Active Power Control and Reserve Estimation in Distributed PV Systems

With the increased adoption of distributed energy resources (DER), they are expected to contribute to power system reliability services and enhance power system stability. This paper presents a distributed consensus control approach for the real-time active power reserve estimation and power management in distributed PV (photovoltaic) systems. The proposed method estimates the cumulative active power reserve from numerous PV generators using only the sparse communication network for a DER aggregator to provide active power regulation services. The real-time active power reserve estimation using the proposed approach can be used by DER aggregators to manage curtailment in distributed PV systems to maintain stipulated reserves and further to provide power system frequency regulation. Using the proposed approach, the DER aggregator only requires measurements at the feeder substation and it does not require information from individual DER units, thereby improving system resiliency. The proposed distributed consensus control method is validated on IEEE 123 testbed using PSCAD simulations.
