Time-independent Anisotropic Plastic Behavior by Mechanical Subelement Models

The paper describes a procedure for modelling the anisotropic elastic-plastic behavior of metals in plane stress state by the mechanical sub-layer model. In this model the stress-strain curves along the longitudinal and transverse directions are represented by short smooth segments which are considered as piecewise linear for simplicity. The model is incorporated in a finite element analysis program which is based on the assumed stress hybrid element and the iscoplasticity-theory.

Orthotropic elasto-plastic behavior of AS4/APC-2 thermoplastic composite in compression

Uniaxial compression tests were performed on off-axis coupon specimens of unidirectional AS4/APC-2 thermoplastic composite at various temperatures. The elasto-plastic and strength properties of AS4/APC-2 composite were characterized with respect to temperature variation by using a one-parameter orthotropic plasticity model and a one-parameter failure criterion. Experimental results show that the orthotropic plastic behavior can be characterized quite well using the plasticity model, and the matrix-dominant compressive strengths can be predicted very accurately by the one-parameter failure criterion.

Unraveling the Highly Plastic Behavior of ALD-Aluminum Oxide Encapsulations by Small-Scale Tensile Testing

We present a study directly measuring the electron-beam-induced plasticity of amorphous Al 2 O 3 coatings. Core–shell nanostructures are employed as small-scale model systems for two-dimensional coatings made by atomic layer deposition (ALD). Copper nanowires (NWs) are used as substrates for ALD deposition, representing a model system for interconnects commonly found in integrated circuits. Experiments are performed in situ in a transmission electron microscope (TEM) and further analyzed with electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS). Our in situ TEM tensile experiments reveal the highly plastic behavior of the ALD shell, which withstands a maximum strain of 188%. Comparable samples under beam-off conditions show a brittle fracture, which underlines the effect of electron irradiation. The electron-beam-activated bond switching within the amorphous network enables compensation of the applied tensile strain, leading to viscous flow. By incorporating an intermediate nanocrystalline layer within the Al 2 O 3 shell, the plasticity is suppressed and brittle fracture occurs. This work directly demonstrates the tuning of mechanical properties in amorphous ALD structures through electron irradiation.

Orthotropic elastic-plastic behavior of AS4/APC-2 thermoplastic composite at elevated temperatures

Inelastic and strength properties of AS4/APC-2 composites were characterized with respect to temperature variation by using a one parameter orthotropic plasticity model and a one parameter failure criterion. Simple uniaxial off-axis tension tests were performed on coupon specimens of unidirectional AS4/APC-2 thermoplastic composite at various temperatures. To avoid the complication caused by the extension-shear coupling effect in off-axis testing, new tabs were designed and used on the test specimens. The experimental results showed that the nonlinear behavior of constitutive relations and the strength can be characterized quite well using the one parameter plasticity model and the failure criterion, respectively.

In-Situ Observation of FCC→HCP Transformation-Induced Plasticity Behavior During Dynamic Deformation of CoCrNi Multi-principal Element Alloys

CoCrNi multi-principal element alloys (MPEAs) have potential as high toughness, blast resistant materials, but limited studies of their high strain rate behavior have been performed. Their high toughness has been attributed to low stacking fault energies and the activation of toughness enhancing deformation mechanisms, such as twinning- and transformation-induced plasticity (TWIP and TRIP, respectively), that may be affected by increased strain rate. This work examines a series of CoCrNi MPEAs tested with a miniaturized pressure bar, while simultaneous synchrotron x-ray diffraction and imaging are performed, and compares these results to those collected during quasi-static deformation at elevated temperatures. Here, the collected diffraction indicates that TRIP was active at elevated strain rates for the most Co-rich alloys containing 50 or 55 at. pct. Co, while TRIP behavior was suppressed at elevated strain rates in a 40 at. pct. Co alloy anticipated to experience TRIP. The suppression of TRIP in the lower Co alloy at high strain rates is attributed to adiabatic heating, consistent with suppression of TRIP as a result of elevated temperatures.

Non-linear elastic-plastic behavior of the invert glass lithium phosphorous oxynitride (LiPON)

Micro and nano-scale mechanical behavior of network/ionic glasses is dictated by their composition and the number of constraints per structural unit. From this perspective, the glass LiPON presents the opportunity for enhancement of the microscale ductility due to its rather unconstrained orthophosphate structure. Here, we use instrumented nanoindentation with different tip geometries to investigate the mechanical response of LiPON glass. The results reveal that the elastic modulus of LiPON is not constant and depends on pressure. With the method utilizing spherical nanoindentation and continuous stiffness measurement (CSM) we determine the yield point of LiPON. We propose the Drucker-Prager type of yield criterion for LiPON and estimate its yield stress in compression as 2.4 GPa. There exists another stress threshold, however, around 490 MPa, at which the elastic deformation becomes non-linear, and this can be mistaken for the yield stress.
