Quantum parton shower with kinematics

Parton showers, which can efficiently incorporate quantum interference effects, have been shown to be run efficiently on quantum computers. However, so far these quantum parton showers have not included the full kinematical information required to reconstruct an event, which in classical parton showers requires the use of a veto algorithm. Here, in this work, we show that adding one extra assumption about the discretization of the evolution variable allows one to construct a quantum veto algorithm, which reproduces the full quantum interference in the event, and allows one to include kinematical effects. We finally show that for certain initial states the quantum interference effects generated in this veto algorithm are classically tractable, such that an efficient classical algorithm can be devised.

alaric parton shower for hadron colliders

We introduce the parton shower for simulating quantum chromodynamics (QCD) radiation at hadron colliders and present numerical results from an implementation in the event generator . provides a consistent framework to quantify certain systematic uncertainties which cannot be eliminated by comparing the parton shower with analytic resummation. In particular, it allows us to study recoil effects away from the soft and collinear limits without the need to change the evolution variable or the splitting functions. We assess the performance of in Drell-Yan lepton pair and QCD jet production, and present the first multijet merging for the new algorithm. Published by the American Physical Society 2025

Double Higgs production at NNLO interfaced to parton showers in GENEVA

In this work, we study the production of Higgs boson pairs at next-to-next-to-leading order in QCD matched to parton showers, using the Geneva framework and working in the heavy-top-limit approximation. This includes the resummation of large logarithms of the zero-jettiness T 0 up to the next-to-next-to-next-to-leading-log accuracy. This process features an extremely large momentum transfer, which makes its study particularly relevant for matching schemes such as that employed in Geneva, where the resummation of a variable different from that used in the ordering of the parton shower is used. To further study this effect, we extend the original shower interface designed for Pythia8 to include other parton showers, such as Dire and Sherpa.

Non-relativistic quantum chromodynamics in parton showers

Measurements of quarkonia isolation in jets at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) have been shown to disagree with fixed-order non-relativistic quantum chromodynamics (NRQCD) calculations, even at higher orders. Calculations using the fragmenting jet function formalism are able to better describe data but cannot provide full event-level predictions. In this work we provide an alternative model via NRQCD production of quarkonia in a timelike parton shower. We include this model in the PYTHIA 8 event generator and validate our parton-shower implementation against analytic forms of the relevant fragmentation functions. Finally, we make inclusive predictions of quarkonia production for the decay of the standard-model Higgs boson.

Resonance- and Width-aware Parton Shower Evolution and NLO Matching

We introduce a technique for the next-to-leading order accurate simulation of $e^+e^-\to W^+W^-b\bar{b}$ that respects the resonant nature of the process above and near the top-quark pair production threshold. The parton-shower evolution, infrared subtraction and NLO matching account in particular for finite width effects beyond the Breit-Wigner structure considered in resonance-aware approaches. We present first phenomenological results relevant to a potential future electron-positron collider and provide a publicly available simulator based on the ALARIC parton shower and the SHERPA event generator.

Matrix element corrections in the PYTHIA8 parton shower in the context of matched simulations at next-to-leading order

We discuss the role of matrix element corrections (MEC) to parton showers in the context of MC@NLO-type matchings for processes that feature unstable resonances, where MEC are liable to result in double-counting issues, and are thus generally not employed. By working with PYTHIA8 , we show that disabling all MEC is actually unnecessary in computations based on the narrow-width approximation, and we propose alternative MEC settings which, while still avoiding double counting, allow one to include hard-recoil effects in the simulations of resonance decays. We illustrate our findings by considering $t\overline{t}$ production at the LHC, and by comparing MadGraph5-aMC@NLO predictions with those of POWHEG-BOX and standalone PYTHIA8 .

Future prospects for parton showers

In this brief Snowmass White Paper for the Theory Frontier, we argue that there have been important recent developments in the algorithms used to generate a simulated parton shower and that further progress can be achieved in the coming decade. A much more detailed exposition can be found in a corresponding White Paper of the Energy Frontier.

Characterizing the hadronization of parton showers using the HOMER method

We update the HOMER method, a technique to solve a restricted version of the inverse problem of hadronization – extracting the Lund string fragmentation function f(z) from data using only observable information. Here, we demonstrate its utility by extracting f(z) from synthetic Pythia simulations using high-level observables constructed on an event-by-event basis, such as multiplicities and shape variables. Four cases of increasing complexity are considered, corresponding to e + e − collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 90 ≥ v producing either a string stretched between a $q$ and $\bar{q}$ containing no gluons; the same string containing one gluon g with fixed kinematics; the same but the gluon has varying kinematics; and the most realistic case, strings with an unrestricted number of gluons that is the end-result of a parton shower. We demonstrate the extraction of f(z) in each case, with the result of only a relatively modest degradation in performance of the HOMER method with the increased complexity of the string system.

Double-real corrections to color singlet decay in a parton-shower inspired scheme

We introduce a local infrared subtraction method for next-to-next-to-leading order QCD calculations in color singlet decays, with counterterms based on scalar radiators and pure splitting functions. Overlapping singularities in the multipole radiation pattern are disentangled by partial fractioning, and the kinematics mapping corresponds to iterated next-to-leading order kinematics. We verify that the double-real remainder to $e^+e^-\to\;q\bar{q}$ is rendered finite in the single and double unresolved limits and investigate the numerical convergence of the Monte-Carlo integral. We compute the phase-space integrals of the scalar counterterms in the back-to-back configuration, both analytically and with the help of numerical techniques based on sector decomposition.

Measurements of angular distance and momentum ratio distributions in three-jet and $${\text {Z}}$$ + two-jet final states in $${\text {p}}{\text {p}}$$ collisions

Collinear (small-angle) and large-angle, as well as soft and hard radiations are investigated in three-jet and Z + two-jet events collected in proton-proton collisions at the LHC. The normalized production cross sections are measured as a function of the ratio of transverse momenta of two jets and their angular separation. The measurements in the three-jet and Z + two-jet events are based on data collected at a center-of-mass energy of 8TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.8fb -1 . The Z + two-jet events are reconstructed in the dimuon decay channel of the Z boson. The three-jet measurement is extended to include $\sqrt {s}$=13TeV data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.3fb -1 . The results are compared to predictions from event generators that include parton showers, multiple parton interactions, and hadronization. The collinear and soft regions are in general well described by parton showers, whereas the regions of large angular separation are often best described by calculations using higher-order matrix elements.

Direct observation of the dead-cone effect in quantum chromodynamics

In particle collider experiments, elementary particle interactions with large momentum transfer produce quarks and gluons (known as partons) whose evolution is governed by the strong force, as described by the theory of quantum chromodynamics (QCD). These partons subsequently emit further partons in a process that can be described as a parton shower, which culminates in the formation of detectable hadrons. Studying the pattern of the parton shower is one of the key experimental tools for testing QCD. This pattern is expected to depend on the mass of the initiating parton, through a phenomenon known as the dead-cone effect, which predicts a suppression of the gluon spectrum emitted by a heavy quark of mass m Q and energy E, within a cone of angular size m Q /E around the emitter. Previously, a direct observation of the dead-cone effect in QCD had not been possible, owing to the challenge of reconstructing the cascading quarks and gluons from the experimentally accessible hadrons. We report the direct observation of the QCD dead cone by using new iterative declustering techniques to reconstruct the parton shower of charm quarks. This result confirms a fundamental feature of QCD. Furthermore, the measurement of a dead-cone angle constitutes a direct experimental observation of the non-zero mass of the charm quark, which is a fundamental constant in the standard model of particle physics.

Explainable machine learning of the underlying physics of high-energy particle collisions

We present an implementation of an explainable and physics-aware machine learning model capable of inferring the underlying physics of high-energy particle collisions using the information encoded in the energy-momentum four-vectors of the final state particles. We demonstrate the proof-of-concept of our White Box AI approach using a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) which learns from a DGLAP-based parton shower Monte Carlo event generator. The constrained generator network architecture mimics the structure of a parton shower exhibiting similarities with Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs). We show, for the first time, that our approach leads to a network that is able to learn not only the final distribution of particles, but also the underlying parton branching mechanism, i.e. the Altarelli-Parisi splitting function, the ordering variable of the shower, and the scaling behavior. While the current work is focused on perturbative physics of the parton shower, we foresee a broad range of applications of our framework to areas that are currently difficult to address from first principles in QCD. Examples include nonperturbative and collective effects, factorization breaking and the modification of the parton shower in heavy-ion, and electron-nucleus collisions.
