Recommended Nuclear Structure and Decay Data for A=206 Isobars

Here, evaluated nuclear structure and decay data for all nuclei with mass number A=206 ( 206 Pt, 206 Au, 206 Hg, 206 Tl, 206 Pb, 206 Bi, 206 Po, 206 At, 206 Rn, 206 Fr, 206 Ra and 206 Ac), are presented. All available experimental data are compiled and evaluated, and best values for level and γ-ray energies, quantum numbers, lifetimes, γ-ray intensities and transition probabilities, as well as other nuclear properties, are recommended. Inconsistencies and discrepancies that exist in the literature are discussed. A number of computer codes (https://www-nds.iaea.org/public/ensdf_pgm/) developed by members of the NSDD network were used during the evaluation process. This work supersedes the earlier evaluation by F.G. Kondev (2008Ko21), published in Nuclear Data Sheets 109, 1527 (2008).

Half-Life and Precision Shape Measurement of the 2⁢𝜈⁢𝛽⁢𝛽 Decay of 130 Te

Here, we present a new measurement of the 2⁢𝜈⁢𝛽⁢𝛽 half-life of 130 Te (𝑇$^{2⁢𝜈}_{1/2}$) using the first complete model of the CUORE data, based on 1038 kg yr of collected exposure. Thanks to optimized data selection, we achieve a factor of two improvement in precision, obtaining 𝑇$^{2⁢𝜈}_{1/2}$ = (9.32⁢$^{+0.05}_{−0.04}$⁢stat⁢ $^{+0.07}_{−0.07}$⁢syst)×10 20 yr. The signal-to-background ratio is increased by 70% compared to our previous results, enabling the first application of the improved 2⁢𝜈⁢𝛽⁢𝛽 formalism to 130 Te . Within this framework, we determine a credibility interval for the effective axial coupling in the nuclear medium as a function of nuclear matrix elements. We also extract values for the higher-order nuclear matrix element ratios: second-to-first and third-to-first. The second-to-first ratio agrees with nuclear model predictions, while the third-to-first ratio deviates from theoretical expectations. These findings provide essential tests of nuclear models and key inputs for future 0⁢𝜈⁢𝛽⁢𝛽 searches.

Nuclear Structure and Decay Data for A=175 Isobars

In this article , nuclear structure data for 15 known nuclides of mass number 175 (Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu, Hf, Ta, W, Re, Os, Ir, Pt, Au, Hg) have been evaluated, which supersedes the earlier work done by M. Shamsuzzoha Basunia (2004Ba89), published in Nuclear Data Sheets 102, 719 (2004).

Evidence for triaxial shape coexistence in 74 Ge

The deformation properties of the low-lying states in 74 Ge have been investigated using multistep Coulomb excitation. The measurements were carried out with the advanced 𝛾-ray tracking array, GRETINA, and the CHICO2 particle detector. A comprehensive set of 𝐸⁢2 transition and diagonal matrix elements was deduced following an analysis with the semiclassical coupled-channels code GOSIA. The data were compared with results of calculations carried out within the framework of the generalized triaxial rotor model as well as with the configuration interaction shell model and the symmetric rotor model. Results from calculations with covariant density functional theory were used to construct a five-dimensional collective Hamiltonian for further comparisons with the data. Collectively, the calculations provide an accurate reproduction of the experimental matrix elements and further support an understanding in terms of the coexistence of two axially asymmetric shapes. In conclusion, this leads to an overall interpretation of the underlying structure of 74 Ge requiring triaxiality, as is also the case in the neighboring even-mass Ge isotopes.

Core-excited microsecond isomer in 207 Pb

An isomeric state with T 1/2 = 1.46(10) μs and E x = 8835 keV has been established in 207 Pb. Here, this state likely arises from the occupation of neutron holes in the high-j i 13/2 and j 15/2 subshells following the excitation of the 208 Pb core. The high-spin excited level structure of 207 Pb has been extended beyond the previously known states up to E x ≈ 6 MeV. Additionally, a more precise value of the half-life of the I π = 10 + isomer in 208 Pb has been obtained. Shell-model calculations provide a good account of the structure up to the 31/2 + level in 207 Pb, while the energies of higher-spin states built from exclusively high-j nucleons are considerably underestimated.

Nuclear Structure and Decay Data for A=35 Isobars

Here, this work presents a comprehensive and critical evaluation of experimental nuclear spectroscopic data from reactions and decays for all 11 known nuclides with mass number 35 (Ne, Na, Mg, Al, Si, P, S, Cl, Ar, K, Ca). Recommended values are produced for level energies, spins and parities, half-lives, and radiation properties including energies, branching ratios, and multipolarities of γ rays, as well as characteristics of β radiation decays, based on a rigorous assessment of all available experimental data. Discrepancies among existing results are carefully addressed. This work supersedes earlier full evaluations of A=35 published by 2011Ch48, 1990En08 (also 1998En04 update) and 1978En02.

This work supersedes previous A=220 evaluations: 2011Br05, 1997Ar04, 1986Ma45, 1976El04.

Nuclear Structure and Decay Data for A=240

The experimental reaction and decay studies producing nuclei in the A=240 mass chain have been reviewed. Data on elements from uranium (Z=92) to einsteinium (Z=99) are included, and level and decay schemes are presented for these nuclides. Furthermore, this work supersedes the previous evaluation for this mass chain (2008Si25).

Nuclear Structure and Decay Data for A=216 Isobars

Experimental data from reaction and decay studies on nuclei with A=216 have been reviewed. Elements included in this review span from mercury (Z=80) to uranium (Z=92). Based on the published data, level and decay schemes are presented for the evaluated nuclides. In conclusion, this work updates and supersedes the previous A=216 evaluation (2007Wu02).

Nuclear Structure and Decay Data for A=169 Isobars

Experimental data pertaining to all nuclei with mass number A=169 (Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu, Hf, Ta, W, Re, Os, Ir, Pt) have been evaluated. Level schemes from both radioactive decay and reaction studies are presented, along with associated tables of experimental data and adopted properties for levels and γ rays. The present evaluation for A=169 supersedes the 2008 evaluation, 2008Ba31, by C.M. Baglin. A few highlights of this evaluation: More extensive work on ε decay from 169W is needed and new experimental work will be required to resolve a discrepancy between the J π values deduced for a 180-keV level in 169Ta based on extensive band structure from (HI,xnγ) work (J π =1/2−) and TDPAD measurements (J=5/2). Low lying states of 169Os were studied via fine structure of 173Pt α decay in 2014ThZZ. The Eαs feeding the g.s. of 169Os in 2008Ba31 are separated well into two consistent groups to feed the g.s. and the newly proposed state at 34.84 keV. Based on the studies of 2014ThZZ and 2021Zh52, the g.s. spin-parity assignment of 169Os has been proposed to be (7/2−) from (5/2−). The 169Ir g.s. half-life and alpha emission branching reported in 2012Th13 from 173Au α decay measurements are preferred over the values in 2005Sc22. The reported half-life value in 2005Sc22 for 169Ir g.s. is discrepant and the research work was carried out in the same lab of 2012Th13.

Picosecond lifetime measurements of resonances using a thick-target invariant-mass technique

Here, a new technique is presented for measuring the half-lives of resonances in the picosecond range using presently available invariant-mass apparatus and a thick target. For short-lived resonances, the energy losses of the decay fragments in the target material change their relative velocities giving rise to a poor invariant-mass resolution. However, for longer-lived resonances that travel through the remaining target material before decaying outside of the target, this dominant contribution to the resolution is eliminated. The measured invariant-mass peak will then display a narrow peak from these events which sits on a wider structure associated with the remaining events that decay in the target. The fraction of the events in the narrow peak is related to the probability that the resonance leaves the target before decaying and hence is related to the lifetime. This technique is exercised for the 2.685-MeV resonance in 33 Cl which decays by emitting an f -wave proton. A half-life of T 1/2 =5.7$^{+4.1}_{-2.5}$ ps was measured which is consistent with values inferred from other known properties of this resonance.

Structure of high-lying excited states in 47 Ca with ℓ ≥ 3 populated in fast-beam 𝛾-ray-tagged one-neutron pickup reactions

Located just one neutron removed from doubly magic, stable 48 Ca, the adjacent isotope 47 Ca has been studied extensively with neutron-removing transfer reactions and interpreted within a shell-model picture. Neutron-adding transfer reactions onto the stable 46 Ca, however, have not been performed in nearly 60 years and never with the aid of high-resolution 𝛾-ray spectroscopy. Here, we report on the 12 C⁡( 46 , Ca 47 Ca+𝛾)⁢𝑋 one-neutron pickup reaction from 12 C onto 46 Ca at more than 50 MeV/nucleon, a regime of orbital angular momentum mismatch that selectively populates 47 Ca final states based on ℓ ≥ 3 neutron configurations. Newly observed excited states and 𝛾-ray transitions are discussed in comparison to 𝑓⁡𝑝 shell-model calculations in a variety of configuration spaces. Furthermore, it is shown that the nature of the observed spectrum of final states can be well interpreted, albeit with a significant fragmentation of the 𝜈⁢0⁢𝑓 5/2 strength observed in the measurement that is not borne out in the structure calculations.

Quenching of the octupole rotational band in 71 Ge

The main goal of this study was to enhance the knowledge of the properties of the known octupole rotational band in 71 Ge, including transition rates, and to investigate whether the band persists to higher spin. An experiment at Florida State University using the 62 Ni ( 14 C, 𝛼⁢𝑛) reaction at 50 MeV was used to produce 71 Ge at high spin. An array of ten Compton-suppressed Ge detectors, consisting of three Clover detectors and seven single-crystal detectors, was used to measure the 𝛾 decays in coincidence. An analysis of the resulting coincidence spectra resulted in the placement of 13 additional transitions in the 71 Ge level scheme, one of which (1092 keV) extends the octupole band to a (35/2 − ) state at 8206 keV. However, calculations of the kinematic moment of inertia show that the 1092-keV transition disrupts the rigid rotational pattern and is likely associated with a band crossing, potentially quenching the octupole deformation. Transition strengths inferred from lifetime measurements in the octupole band are not well reproduced by either shell-model calculations using the JUN45 interaction or a semimicroscopic cluster model, while those for the 𝜈⁢𝑔 9/2 band are in good agreement with the corresponding shell-model predictions. Comparisons between the octupole band in 71 Ge and negative-parity bands based on 3 − octupole states in some neighboring even-even nuclei show both similarities and differences. Systematic trends within the 𝜈⁢𝑔 9/2 bands among odd-𝐴 Ge isotopes point to increased collectivity near 𝑁 = 40.

Rotational bands in 249 Md

Rotational structures in 249 Md have been observed for the first time. One set of states forms a pair of strongly coupled bands with relatively strong E2 transitions and no identifiable M1 transitions between the two signature partners. Another set of states suggests a decoupled sequence of E2 transitions. Furthermore, these bands are assigned as based on the 7/2 − [514] and on the favored signature of the 1/2 - [521] Nilsson level, respectively. Based on previous decay studies, these levels are thought to be the ground state and first excited state of 249 Md, which also agrees with theoretical predictions.

Universal Effective Charges in the 𝑠⁢𝑑 and 𝑓⁡𝑝 Shells

The 247-keV state in 54 Sc, populated in the 𝛽 decay of 54 Ca, is reported here as a nanosecond isomer with a half-life of 26.0(22) ns. The state is interpreted as the 1 + member of the 𝜋⁢𝑓 7/2 ⊗ 𝜈⁢𝑓 5/2 spin-coupled multiplet, which decays to the 3 + ,𝜋⁢𝑓 7/2 ⊗ 𝜈⁢𝑝 1/2 ground state. The new half-life corresponds to a pure 𝐸⁢2 transition with a strength of 1.93(16) W.u., providing the most precise, unambiguous 𝐵⁡(𝐸⁢2) value in the neutron-rich 𝑓⁡𝑝 region to date for a nucleus with valence protons above 𝑍 = 20. Notably, it is roughly 4 times larger than the 𝐵⁡(𝐸⁢2;1/2 − → 5/2 − ) value in 55 Ca. The results, as compared to semiempirical and ab initio shell-model calculations, indicate (1) a weak 𝑁 = 34 subshell gap relative to 𝑁 = 32, (2) a large 𝐸⁢2 enhancement in Sc as compared to Ca due to 1⁢𝑝 − 1⁢ℎ proton excitations across 𝑍 = 28, and (3) empirical effective proton and neutron charges 𝑒 𝜋 = 1.30⁢(8)⁢𝑒 and 𝑒 𝜈 = 0.452⁢(7)⁢𝑒, respectively, that are in contrast to reports of 𝑒 𝜋 ≈1.1–1.15⁢𝑒 and 𝑒 𝜈 ≈ 0.6–0.8⁢𝑒 for 𝑓⁡𝑝-shell nuclei near 𝑁 = 𝑍. Here, we demonstrate that these reports are erroneous and that, in fact, a universal set of effective charges can be used across the 𝑠⁢𝑑 and 𝑓⁡𝑝 shells.

First 𝛽-Delayed Two-Neutron Spectroscopy of the 𝑟-Process Nucleus 134 In and Observation of the 𝑖 13/2 Single-Particle Neutron State in 133 Sn

This manuscript reports on the direct observation of a 𝛽-delayed two-neutron emission in a study of 134 In at the ISOLDE Decay Station using neutron spectroscopy. We also report on the first measurement in 𝛽 − decay of the long-sought 13/2 + excited state in 133 Sn, attributed to be the neutron single-particle 𝑖 13/2 orbital. The observation of sequential neutron emission is used to extract the relative population of the 𝑖 13/2 state, which was found to be much smaller than the predictions of the statistical model. The experiment was possible because of the innovative use of a neutron array with neutron discrimination and interaction tracking capabilities. This is the first study of the details of the two-neutron emission for a nucleus, which belongs to the 𝑟-process path. Understanding 𝛽-delayed two-neutron emission probabilities is essential to validate models used in astrophysical 𝑟-process nucleosynthesis calculations. Observing two-neutron emissions in 𝛽 − decay paves the way for new experiments to study energy and angular correlations for 𝛽-delayed multineutron emitters.

Isomeric states in the neutron-rich 𝑁 = 108 nuclei 178 Yb and 179 Lu

A multinucleon transfer reaction with a 136 Xe beam and a gold-backed 176 Yb target populated isomers in N = 108 178 Yb and 179 Lu. The single decay from the t 1/2 = 203(16) ns isomer in 178 Yb to the I π = 4 + level in the ground-state band suggests a I π = 4 − assignment, and multiquasiparticle calculations associate this state with the K π = 4 − , ν 2 (1/2[510], 9/2[624]) configuration. At least two isomers were observed in 179 Lu. One likely couples the K π = 4 − configuration found in 178 Yb to the 9/2[514] quasiproton orbital to form a K π = 17/2 + level (t 1/2 = 1.0(4) µs) which primarily decays into the rotational band based on the 9/2[514] state. A second isomer was observed to decay into this same band, but at higher energy and spin. Based on its feeding pattern, its similarity to an isomer found in 181 Ta, and a multiquasiparticle calculation, it is proposed to correspond to a K π = 29/2 − state based on the π9/2[514]ν 2 (9/2[624], 11/2[615]) configuration. As a result, an analysis of the reduced hindrance factors for negative-parity, two-quasineutron isomers in the rare-earth region is presented as well.

Extraction of ground-state nuclear deformations from ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions: Nuclear structure physics context

The collective-flow-assisted nuclear shape-imaging method in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions (UHICs) has recently been used to characterize nuclear collective states. In this paper, we assess the foundations of the shape-imaging technique employed in these studies. We argue that some current UHIC nuclear imaging techniques neglect fundamental aspects of spontaneous symmetry breaking and symmetry restoration in colliding ions and incorrectly infer one-body multipole moments from studies of nucleonic correlations. Therefore, the impact of this approach on nuclear structure research has been overstated. Conversely, efforts to incorporate existing knowledge on nuclear shapes into analysis pipelines can be beneficial for benchmarking tools and calibrating models used to extract information from ultrarelativistic heavy-ion experiments.
