Nuclear Reaction Data Evaluations for Nuclear Applications Physics and modeling [Slides]

This presentation provides an evaluation workflow scheme for the project. It also discusses nuclear data libraries, including an overview of worldwide nuclear data libraries and current funding agencies. The presentation also discusses the theoretical framework commonly used in the evaluated work, including the R-matrix theory (≈ up to a few keVs for heavy nuclei) as well as pre-equilibrium (PE) and Hauser-Feshbach (HF) theory (⪆1 MeV for medium/heavy nuclei). Inclusion of experimental effects are also discussed. Examples of evaluated work, including theory, experiments, and applications are discussed, specifically n+ 28,29,30 Si evaluation (direct capture component), n+ 53 Cr evaluation (strong multiple scattering effects), n+ 239 Pu(n,γf) reaction (fluctuations in neutron multiplicities), and α+ 17,18 O evaluations (emerging neutron spectra).

CEA/DAM - CEA/DEN - LANL - IAEA - IPHC Collaboration Meeting on Nuclear Data, Nuclear Reaction Theories, and Machine Learning (Summary Report)

Dupuis hosted our biennial CEA/NNSA collaboration meeting, and Kawano and Lovell of LANL and Tamagno of CEA/DEN (Cadarache) visited CEA/DAM to discuss current issues and further developments in nuclear reaction modeling, nuclear data evaluation, and relevant programs of modern computer science, especially the machine learning technology. The discussions included topics of our common interest such as neutron inelastic scattering, capture, and fission, with particular emphasis on the actinide nuclear data evaluations. We report briefly the summary of our discussions. We also had a half-day video meeting with Capote of IAEA and Kerveno of IPHC to discuss nuclear reactions on actinides.

Improving nuclear data evaluations with predictive reaction theory and indirect measurements

Nuclear reaction data required for astrophysics and applications is incomplete, as not all nuclear reactions can be measured or reliably predicted. Neutron-induced reactions involving unstable targets are particularly challenging, but often critical for simulations. In response to this need, indirect approaches, such as the surrogate reaction method, have been developed. Nuclear theory is key to extract reliable cross sections from such indirect measurements. We describe ongoing efforts to expand the theoretical capabilities that enable surrogate reaction measurements. We focus on microscopic predictions for charged-particle inelastic scattering, uncertainty-quantified optical nucleon-nucleus models, and neural-network enhanced parameter inference.

ENDF/B-VIII.1: Updated Nuclear Reaction Data Library for Science and Applications

The ENDF/B-VIII.1 library is the newest recommended evaluated nuclear data file by the Cross Section Evaluation Working Group (CSEWG) for use in nuclear science and technology applications, and incorporates advances made in the six years since the release of ENDF/B-VIII.0. Among key advances made are that the 239 Pu file was reevaluated by a joint international effort and that updated 16,18 O, 19 F, 28–30 Si, 50–54 Cr, 55 Mn, 54,56,57 Fe, 63,65 Cu, 139 La, 233,235,238 U, and 240,241 Pu neutron nuclear data from the IAEA coordinated INDEN collaboration were adopted. Over 60 neutron dosimetry cross sections were adopted from the IAEA's IRDFF-II library. In addition, the new library includes significant changes for 3 He, 6 Li, 9 Be, 51 V, 88 Sr, 103 Rh, 140,142 Ce, Dy, 181 Ta, Pt, 206–208 Pb, and 234,236 U neutron data, and new nuclear data for the photonuclear, charged-particle and atomic sublibraries. Numerous thermal neutron scattering kernels were reevaluated or provided for the very first time. On the covariance side, work was undertaken to introduce better uncertainty quantification standards and testing for nuclear data covariances. The significant effort to reevaluate important nuclides has reduced bias in the simulations of many integral experiments with particular progress noted for fluorine, copper, and stainless steel containing benchmarks. Data issues hindered the successful deployment of the previous ENDF/B-VIII.0 for commercial nuclear power applications in high burnup situations. These issues were addressed by improving the 238 U and 239,240,241 Pu evaluated data in the resonance region. The new library performance as a function of burnup is similar to the reference ENDF/B-VII.1 library.

ENDF/B-VIII.1: Alpha Reaction Sublibrary

The alphas sublibrary aims to describe nuclear reactions between incident alpha particles and different nuclei. For ENDF/B-VIII.1, the LLNL ECPL evaluation for 6Li, and the JENDL-based NNL evaluations of 9 Be and 16,17 O were adopted. Also, there were minor fixes done to 4 He.

ENDF/B-VIII.1: Decay Reaction Sublibrary

The decay sublibrary aims to describe all known spontaneous decays and branching ratios for all nuclei across the nuclide chart. ENDF/B-VIII.1 remains unchanged from ENDF/B-VIII.0 for the decay sublibrary.

ENDF/B-VIII.1: Deuteron Reaction Sublibrary

The deuterons sublibrary aims to describe nuclear reactions between incident deuteron particles and different nuclei. For ENDF/B-VIII.1, we adopted additions and corrections to the ENDF/B-VIII.0 d+t file, as well as new LANL evaluation updates for 3 He and 6 Li.

ENDF/B-VIII.1: Helium-3 Reaction Sublibrary

The Helium-3 (Helions) sublibrary aims to describe nuclear reactions between incident 3 He particles and different nuclei. For ENDF/B-VIII.1, we adopted a new 4He evaluation from the INDEN collaboration and the LLNL ECPL evaluation for 7 Li.

ENDF/B-VIII.1: Neutron Reaction Sublibrary

The neutrons sublibrary aims to describe nuclear reactions between incident neutron particles and different nuclei. For ENDF/B-VIII.1, many neutron files were re-evaluated or received major changes. A new 239Pu evaluation was jointly-produced by IAEA, LANL, LLNL and ORNL bringing important updates to fission neutron multiplicity, Prompt Fission Neutron Spectrum, resonance and fast regions. Around one third of the new neutron evaluations were performed as part of the INDEN collaboration, including 16,18 O, 19 F, 28,29,30 Si, 63,65 Cu, 50,51,52,53,54 Cr, 55 Mn, 54,56,57 Fe, 139 La, 233,235,238 U, 240,241 Pu. Important non-INDEN evaluations include 234,236 U, 206,207,208 Pb, 181 Ta, 88 Sr, 140,142 Ce, Pt and Dy isotopes, and many others. Also, dosimetry reactions from IRDFF-II were adopted for many materials.

ENDF/B-VIII.1: Neutron Induced Fission Product Yields Sublibrary

The neutron-induced fission yields (NFY) sublibray aims to describe fission yields in neutron-induced reactions. For ENDF/B-VIII.1, there were no new fission yields complete evaluations. However, an important fix the 241 Pu NFY file was implemented, solving a long-standing anomalous discontinuity issue accidentally introduced in ENDF/B-VI.2, decades ago. Additionally, many erroneously large uncertainties, present in NFY from ENDF/B-VIII.0, were corrected.

ENDF/B-VIII.1: Spontaneous Fission Product Yields Reaction Sublibrary

The spontaneous fission yields (SFY) sublibray aims to describe fission yields that happen spontaneous, without any incident particle. For ENDF/B-VIII.1, there were no new fission yields complete evaluations. However, many erroneously large uncertainties, present in both SFY from ENDF/B-VIII.0, were corrected.
