Multi-Parameter Nonlinear Gain Correction of X-Ray Transition Edge Sensors for the X-Ray Integral Field Unit

With its array of 3840 Transition Edge Sensors (TESs), the Athena X-ray Integral Field Unit (X-IFU) will provide spatially resolved high-resolution spectroscopy (2.5 eV up to 7 keV) from 0.2 to 12 keV, with an absolute energy scale accuracy of 0.4 eV. Slight changes in the TES operating environment can cause significant variations in its energy response function, which may result in systematic errors in the absolute energy scale. We plan to monitor such changes at pixel level via onboard X-ray calibration sources and correct the energy scale accordingly using a linear or quadratic interpolation of gain curves obtained during ground calibration. However, this may not be sufficient to meet the 0.4 eV accuracy required for the XIFU. In this contribution, we introduce a newtwo-parameter gain correction technique, based on both the pulse-height estimate of a fiducial line and the baseline value of the pixels. Using gain functions that simulate ground calibration data, we show that this technique can accurately correct deviations in detector gain due to changes in TES operating conditions such as heat sink temperature, bias voltage, thermal radiation loading and linear amplifier gain. We also address potential optimisations of the onboard calibration source and compare the performance of this new technique with those previously used.

Thermal detection of X-rays

The development of calorimeters is described in terms of their proposed application to sounding-rocket investigations of cosmic X-ray sources. The fundamental theory of the energy resolution of the devices is given, and general discussions are presented regarding the limitations associated with the materials used and available thermometer types. Also given are data describing electrical nonlinearity as a function of temperature, thermistor sensitivity, and heat capacity, as well as data regarding the excess noise that aids in the conduction process. Cryogenic calorimeters based on doped semiconductor thermistors are found to be limited, although thermal detectors have important applications to high-resolution laboratory spectroscopy. Electrical nonlinearity and the excess noise are found to be important for obtaining optimum heat capacity in the thermistor.

Data-constrained Solar Modeling with GX Simulator

To facilitate the study of solarflares and active regions, we have created a modeling framework, the freelydistributed GX Simulator IDL package, that combines 3D magnetic and plasma structures with thermal andnonthermal models of the chromosphere, transition region, and corona. Its object-based modular architecture, which runs on Windows, Mac, and Unix/Linux platforms, offers the ability to either import 3D density andtemperature distribution models, or to assign numerically defined coronal or chromospheric temperatures anddensities, or their distributions, to each individual voxel. GX Simulator can apply parametric heating modelsinvolving average properties of the magneticfield lines crossing a given voxel, as well as compute and investigatethe spatial and spectral properties of radio,(sub)millimeter, EUV, and X-ray emissions calculated from the model, and quantitatively compare them with observations. The package includes a fully automatic model productionpipeline that, based on minimal users input, downloads the required SDO/HMI vector magneticfield data, performs potential or nonlinear force-freefield extrapolations, populates the magneticfield skeleton withparameterized heated plasma coronal models that assume either steady-state or impulsive plasma heating, andgenerates non-LTE density and temperature distribution models of the chromosphere that are constrained byphotospheric measurements. The standardized models produced by this pipeline may be further customizedthrough specialized IDL scripts, or a set of interactive tools provided by the graphical user interface. Here, wedescribe the GX Simulator framework and its applications.

High Resolution Photoexcitation Measurements Exacerbate the Long-Standing Fe XVII Oscillator Strength Problem

For more than 40 years, most astrophysical observations and laboratory studies of two key soft x-ray diagnostic 2p - 3d transitions, 3C and 3D, in Fe XVII ions found oscillator strength rations f(3C)/f(3D) disagreeing with theory, but uncertainties had precluded definitive statements on this much studied conundrum. Here, we resonantly excite these lines using synchrotron radiation at PETRA III, and reach, at a millionfold lower photon intensities, a 10 times higher spectral resolution, and 3 times smaller uncertainty than earlier work. Our final result of f(3C)/f(3D) = 3.09(8)(6) supports many of the earlier clean astrophysical and laboratory observations, while departing by five sigmas from our own newest large-scale ab initio calculations, and excluding all proposed explanations, including those invoking nonlinear effects and population transfers.
