The nonconforming virtual element method for eigenvalue problems

We analyse the nonconforming Virtual Element Method (VEM) for the approximation of elliptic eigenvalue problems. The nonconforming VEM allow to treat in the same formulation the two- and three-dimensional case.We present two possible formulations of the discrete problem, derived respectively by the nonstabilized and stabilized approximation of the L 2 -inner product, and we study the convergence properties of the corresponding discrete eigenvalue problems. The proposed schemes provide a correct approximation of the spectrum and we prove optimal-order error estimates for the eigenfunctions and the usual double order of convergence of the eigenvalues. Finally we show a large set of numerical tests supporting the theoretical results, including a comparison with the conforming Virtual Element choice.

The nonconforming Virtual Element Method for eigenvalue problems

In this work, we analyse the nonconforming Virtual Element Method (VEM) for the approximation of elliptic eigenvalue problems. The nonconforming VEM allows to treat in the same formulation the two- and three-dimensional case. We present two possible formulations of the discrete problem, derived respectively by the nonstabilized and stabilized approximation of the $L^2$-inner product, and we study the convergence properties of the corresponding discrete eigenvalue problem. The proposed schemes provide a correct approximation of the spectrum, in particular we prove optimal-order error estimates for the eigenfunctions and the usual double order of convergence of the eigenvalues. Finally we show a large set of numerical tests supporting the theoretical results, including a comparison with the conforming Virtual Element choice.

The fully nonconforming virtual element method for biharmonic problems

Here in this paper, we address the numerical approximation of linear fourth-order elliptic problems on polygonal meshes. In particular, we present a novel nonconforming virtual element discretization of arbitrary order of accuracy for biharmonic problems. The approximation space is made of possibly discontinuous functions, thus giving rise to the fully nonconforming virtual element method. We derive optimal error estimates in a suitable (broken) energy norm and present numerical results to assess the validity of the theoretical estimates.

SUPG stabilization for the nonconforming virtual element method for advection–diffusion–reaction equations

We present here the design, convergence analysis and numerical investigations of the nonconforming virtual element method with Streamline Upwind/Petrov–Galerkin (VEM-SUPG) stabilization for the numerical resolution of convection–diffusion–reaction problems in the convective-dominated regime. According to the virtual discretization approach, the bilinear form is split as the sum of a consistency and a stability term. The consistency term is given by substituting the functions of the virtual space and their gradients with their polynomial projection in each term of the bilinear form (including the SUPG stabilization term). Polynomial projections can be computed exactly from the degrees of freedom. The stability term is also built from the degrees of freedom by ensuring the correct scalability properties with respect to the mesh size and the equation coefficients. The nonconforming formulation relaxes the continuity conditions at cell interfaces and a weaker regularity condition is considered involving polynomial moments of the solution jumps at cell interface. Optimal convergence properties of the method are proved in a suitable norm, which includes contribution from the advective stabilization terms. Experimental results confirm the theoretical convergence rates.

Design and convergence analysis of the conforming virtual element method for polyharmonic problems

In the recent years, there has been a tremendous interest to numerical methods that approximate partial differential equations (PDEs) on computational meshes with arbitrarily-shaped polygonal/polyhedral (polytopal, for short) elements. A nonexhaustive list of such methods include the Mimetic Finite Difference method [4, 9, 21, 24, 28, 33, 35, 62, 64–67], the Polygonal Finite Element Method [68, 73, 74], the polygonal Discontinuous Galerkin Finite Element Methods [5, 7, 8, 10, 13–15, 18, 36, 38, 39, 41, 50], the Hybridizable Discontinuous Galerkin and Hybrid High-Order Methods [46–48, 51], the Gradient Discretization method [49, 53, 54], the Finite Volume Method [52], and the BEM-based FEM [71]. An alternative approach that also proved to be very successful is provided by the Virtual Element method (VEM), which was originally proposed in [19] for the numerical treatment of second-order elliptic problems [43, 44], and readily extended to linear and nonlinear elasticity [22, 25, 56], plate bending problems [37], Cahn-Hilliard equation [3], Stokes equations [2], Laplace-Beltrami equation [55], Darcy-Brinkam equation [76], discrete topology optimization problems [6], fracture networks problems [29], eigenvalue problems [59, 75]. The mixed virtual element formulation was proposed in [20, 34]; the nonconforming Virtual element formulations was proposed for second-order elliptic problems in [16], and later extended to general advection-reaction-diffusion problems, Stokes equation, the biharmonic problems, the iegenvalue problem, and the Schrodinger equation in [11, 30, 42, 45, 58, 80]. The p- and hp-version of the VEM were developed in [26, 27] and efficient multigrid methods for the resulting linear system of equations in [12]. A posteriori error estimates can be found in [40].

Design, analysis and preliminary numerical results for the nonconforming VEM for parabolic problems

The virtual element method (VEM) is a numerical methodology for solving partial differential equations on unstructured polytopal meshes. In this work, we extend the nonconforming high-order formulation suitable to time-dependent diffusion problems with possibly nonlinear forcing terms. Coupling high-order virtual element formulations in space with time-marching schemes based on Backward Differention Formulas (BDFs) makes a fully discrete method with optimal order of convergence in the Method of Lines framework. We investigate and assess the performance of the method through theoretical analysis and a set of numerical experiments.
