A Crosslinked Ionic Organic Framework for Efficient Iodine and Iodide Remediation in Water

Abstract Iodine is widely used as an antimicrobial reagent for water disinfection in the wilderness and outer space, but residual iodine and iodide need to be removed for health reasons. Currently, it is challenging to remove low concentrations of iodine and iodide in water (≈5 ppm). Furthermore, the remediation of iodine and iodide across a broad temperature range (up to 90 °C) has not previously been investigated. In this work, we report a nitrate dimer‐directed synthesis of a single‐crystalline ionic hydrogen‐bonded crosslinked organic framework (H C OF‐7). H C OF‐7 removes iodine and iodide species in water efficiently through halogen bonding and anion exchange, reducing the total iodine concentration to 0.22 ppm at room temperature. Packed H C OF‐7 columns were employed for iodine/iodide breakthrough experiments between 23 and 90 °C, and large breakthrough volumes were recorded (≥18.3 L g −1 ). The high iodine/iodide removal benchmarks recorded under practical conditions make H C OF‐7 a promising adsorbent for water treatment.

A Crosslinked Ionic Organic Framework for Efficient Iodine and Iodide Remediation in Water

Currently, it is challenging to remove low concentrations of iodine and iodide in water (~5 ppm). Furthermore, the remediation of iodine and iodide across a broad temperature range (up to 90 °C) has not previously been investigated. In this work, we report a nitrate dimer-directed synthesis of a single-crystalline ionic hydrogen-bonded crosslinked organic framework (HCOF-7). HCOF-7 removes iodine and iodide species in water efficiently through halogen bonding and anion exchange, reducing the total iodine concentration to 0.22 ppm at room temperature. Packed HCOF-7 columns were employed for iodine/iodide breakthrough experiments between 23 and 90 °C, and large breakthrough volumes were recorded (≥18.3 L/g). Finally, the high iodine/iodide removal benchmarks recorded under practical conditions make HCOF-7 a promising adsorbent for water treatment.

Purification and properties of a dissimilatory nitrate reductase from Haloferax denitrificans

A membrane-bound nitrate reductase (nitrite:(acceptor) oxidoreductase, EC 1.7.99.4) from the extremely halophilic bacterium Haloferax denitrificans was solubilized by incubating membranes in buffer lacking NaCl and purified by DEAE, hydroxylapatite, and Sepharose 6B gel filtration chromatography. The purified nitrate reductase reduced chlorate and was inhibited by azide and cyanide. Preincubating the enzyme with cyanide increased the extent of inhibition which in turn was intensified when dithionite was present. Although cyanide was a noncompetitive inhibitor with respect to nitrate, nitrate protected against inhibition. The enzyme, as isolated, was composed of two subunits (Mr 116,000 and 60,000) and behaved as a dimer during gel filtration (Mr 380,000). Unlike other halobacterial enzymes, this nitrate reductase was most active, as well as stable, in the absence of salt.

Precursor reaction pathway leading to BiFeO 3 formation: insights from text-mining and chemical reaction network analyses

BiFeO 3 (BFO) is a next-generation non-toxic multiferroic material with applications in sensors, memory devices, and spintronics, where its crystallinity and crystal structure directly influence its functional properties. Designing sol–gel syntheses that result in phase-pure BFO remains a challenge due to the complex interactions between metal complexes in the precursor solution. Here, we combine text-mined data and chemical reaction network (CRN) analysis to obtain novel insight into BFO sol–gel precursor chemistry. We perform text-mining analysis of 340 synthesis recipes with the emphasis on phase-pure BFO and identify trends in the use of precursor materials, including that nitrates are the preferred metal salts, 2-methoxyethanol (2 ME) is the dominant solvent, and adding citric acid as a chelating agent frequently leads to phase-pure BFO. Our CRN analysis reveals that the thermodynamically favored reaction mechanism between bismuth nitrate and 2ME interaction involves partial solvation followed by dimerization, contradicting assumptions in previous literature. We suggest that further oligomerization, facilitated by nitrite ion bridging, is critical for achieving the pure BFO phase.

A bis-calix[4]arene-supported [Cu II 16 ] cage

Reaction of 2,2'-bis-p- t Bu-calix[4]arene (H 8 L) with Cu(NO 3 ) 2 ·3H 2 O and N-methyldiethanolamine (Me-deaH 2 ) in a basic dmf/MeOH mixture affords [Cu II 16 (L) 2 (Me-dea) 4 (μ 4 -NO 3 ) 2 (μ-OH) 4 (dmf) 3.5 (MeOH) 0.5 (H 2 O) 2 ](H 6 L)·16dmf·4H 2 O (4), following slow evaporation of the mother liquor. The central core of the metallic skeleton describes a tetracapped square prism, [Cu 12 ], in which the four capping metal ions are the CuII ions housed in the calix[4]arene polyphenolic pockets. The [Cu II 8 ] square prism is held together “internally” by a combination of hydroxide and nitrate anions, with the N-methyldiethanolamine co-ligands forming dimeric [Cu II 2 ] units which edge-cap above and below the upper and lower square faces of the prism. Charge balance is maintained through the presence of one doubly deprotonated H 6 L 2- ligand per [Cu 16 ] cluster. Magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal the predominance of strong antiferromagnetic exchange interactions and an S = 1 ground state, while EPR is consistent with a large zero-field splitting.

Reactions of the ˙NO 3 radical with nuclear extraction ligands in alkane solution

Here, the reactivity of the nitrate radical (NO 3 ˙) with organophosphorus and amidic actinide and lanthanide complexing agents of interest to nuclear solvent extraction applications was measured, resulting in the first-ever reported bimolecular rate constants for this radicals’ reactions in dodecane solution. The order of reactivity for neutral organophosphorus compounds showed faster rate constants with increasing electron density on the phosphoryl phosphorus atom, indicating an increasing facility for electron abstraction reactions occurring in addition to H-atom abstraction from the ligand alkane chains. The only acidic organophosphorus compound investigated, HEH[EHP], showed low reactivity with the NO 3 ˙ radical, attributed to its dimerization in this non-polar solvent. Amide ligand reaction rates were faster than for organophosphorus molecules, suggesting more facile H-atom abstraction from carbonyl activated methylene and amyl groups. While all rate constants were slower than the diffusion-limited rate they were still rapid enough to result in significant oxidation of solvent extraction ligands in dodecane solution.

Direct observation of ClO from chlorine nitrate photolysis

Chlorine nitrate photolysis has been investigated with the use of a molecular beam technique. Excitation at both 248 and 193 nanometers led to photodissociation by two pathways, ClONO2 yields ClO + NO2 and ClONO2 yields Cl + NO3, with comparable yields. This experiment provides a direct measurement of the ClO product channel and consequently raises the possibility of an analogous channel in ClO dimer photolysis. Photodissociation of the ClO dimer is a critical step in the catalytic cycle that is presumed to dominate polar stratospheric ozone destruction. A substantial yield of ClO would reduce the efficiency of this cycle.

Soft-Chemical Synthesis, Structure Evolution, and Insulator-to-Metal Transition in Pyrochlore-like λ-RhO 2

λ-RhO 2 , a prototype 4d transition metal oxide, has been prepared by the oxidative delithiation of spinel LiRh 2 O 4 using ceric ammonium nitrate. Average-structure studies of this RhO 2 polytype, including synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction and electron diffraction, indicate the room-temperature structure to be tetragonal, in space group I4 1 /amd, with a first-order structural transition to cubic $Fd\bar{3}m$ at T = 345 K on warming. Synchrotron X-ray pair distribution function analysis and 7 Li solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance measurements suggest that the room-temperature structure displays local Rh-Rh bonding. The formation of these local dimers appears to be associated with a metal-to-insulator transition with a nonmagnetic ground state, as also supported by density functional theory-based electronic structure calculations. In conclusion, this contribution demonstrates the power of soft chemistry to kinetically stabilize a simple binary oxide compound.

Structural Investigation of Technetium Dibutylphosphate Species Using X-ray Absorption Fine Structure Spectroscopy

The speciation of Tc after the extraction of Tc(IV) from H 2 O and 1 M HNO 3 by dibutylphosphoric acid (HDBP) in dodecane has been studied by X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectroscopy. Results show the formation of dimeric species with Tc 2 O 2 and Tc 2 O units, and the formulas [Tc 2 O 2 (DBP·HDBP) 4 ] (1) and [Tc 2 O(NO 3 ) 2 (DBP) 2 (DBP·HDBP) 2 ] (2) were, respectively, proposed for the species extracted from H 2 O and 1 M HNO 3 . The interatomic Tc–Tc distances found in the Tc 2 O 2 and Tc 2 O units [2.55(3) and 3.57(4) Å, respectively] are similar to the ones found in Tc(IV) dinuclear species. It is likely that the speciation of Tc(IV) in dodecane is due to the extraction of a species with a Tc 2 O unit for (2) and to the redissolution of a Tc(IV)-DBP solid for (1). The XAFS results for (1) and (2) were compared to that obtained for the extraction of Tc(IV) with TBP/HDBP/dodecane from 0.5 M HNO 3 , (3) which highlight the formation of Tc mononuclear nitrate species {i.e. [Tc(NO 3 ) 3 (DBP)] or [Tc(NO 3 ) 2 (DBP·HDBP)]}. These results confirm the importance of the preparation and speciation of the Tc(IV) aqueous solutions prior to extraction and how much this influences and drives the final Tc speciation in organic extraction. Here, these studies outline the complexity of Tc separation chemistry and provide insights into the behavior of Tc during the reprocessing of used nuclear fuel.
