A knowledge-based system with learning for computer communication network design

Computer communication network design is well-known as complex and hard. For that reason, the most effective methods used to solve it are heuristic. Weaknesses of these techniques are listed and a new approach based on artificial intelligence for solving this problem is presented. This approach is particularly recommended for large packet switched communication networks, in the sense that it permits a high degree of reliability and offers a very flexible environment dealing with many relevant design parameters such as link cost, link capacity, and message delay.

Global Optimization via Quadratic Disjunctive Programming for Water Networks Design with Energy Recovery

Generalized disjunctive programming (GDP) models with bilinear and concave constraints, often seen in water network design, are challenging optimization problems. This work proposes quadratic and piecewise linear approximations for nonlinear terms to reformulate GDP models into quadratic GDP (QGDP) models that suitable solvers may solve more efficiently. We illustrate the benefits of the quadratic reformulation with a water treatment network design problem in which nonconvexities arise from bilinear terms in the mixers’ mass balances and concave investment cost functions of treatment units. Given the similarities with water network design problems, we suggest quadratic approximation for the GDP model for the optimal design of a large-scale reverse electrodialysis (RED) process. This power technology can recover energy from salinity differences between by-product streams of the water sector, such as desalination brine mixed with regenerated wastewater effluents. The solver Gurobi excels in handling QGDP problems, but weighing the problem’s precision and tractability balance is crucial. The piecewise linear approximation yields more accurate, yet larger QGDP models that may require longer optimization times in large-scale process synthesis problems.

Issues in packet radio network design

The physical aspects of a packet radio network design, the automated management of the network, and the interface of the network to the users are examined. The networks provide data communications to users located over a broad geographic region where direct radio or wire connection between the source and destination user is not practical; the network consists of a radio, antenna, and digital controller. The physical connectivity, bandwidth-time-space management, channel access, and data link control of the network are analyzed. Consideration is given to link determination and control, routing and packet forwarding, congestion and flow control, and supported users management. The operation and management of a packet radio network, in particular network deployment and maintenance, network access methods, and its effect on the radio spectrum, are discussed. The performance and cost of a packet radio network are evaluated.

State criminal justice telecommunications (STACOM). Volume 4: Network design software user's guide

A user's guide to the network design program is presented. The program is written in FORTRAN V and implemented on a UNIVAC 1108 computer under the EXEC-8 operating system which enables the user to construct least-cost network topologies for criminal justice digital telecommunications networks. A complete description of program features, inputs, processing logic, and outputs is presented, and a sample run and a program listing are included.

Communications network design and costing model users manual

The information and procedures needed to exercise the communications network design and costing model for performing network analysis are presented. Specific procedures are included for executing the model on the NASA Lewis Research Center IBM 3033 computer. The concepts, functions, and data bases relating to the model are described. Model parameters and their format specifications for running the model are detailed.

Theoretical study of network design methodologies for the aerial relay system

The aerial relay system network design problem is discussed. A generalized branch and bound based algorithm is developed which can consider a variety of optimization criteria, such as minimum passenger travel time and minimum liner and feeder operating costs. The algorithm, although efficient, is basically useful for small size networks, due to its nature of exponentially increasing computation time with the number of variables.

Communications network design and costing model programmers manual

Otpimization algorithms and techniques used in the communications network design and costing model for least cost route and least cost network problems are examined from the programmer's point of view. All system program modules, the data structures within the model, and the files which make up the data base are described.

Alternative communication network designs for an operational Plato 4 CAI system

The cost of alternative communications networks for the dissemination of PLATO IV computer-aided instruction (CAI) was studied. Four communication techniques are compared: leased telephone lines, satellite communication, UHF TV, and low-power microwave radio. For each network design, costs per student contact hour are computed. These costs are derived as functions of student population density, a parameter which can be calculated from census data for one potential market for CAI, the public primary and secondary schools. Calculating costs in this way allows one to determine which of the four communications alternatives can serve this market least expensively for any given area in the U.S. The analysis indicates that radio distribution techniques are cost optimum over a wide range of conditions.

[Network Design of the Spaceport Command and Control System]

I helped the Launch Control System (LCS) hardware team sustain the network design of the Spaceport Command and Control System. I wrote the procedure that will be used to satisfy an official hardware test for the hardware carrying data from the Launch Vehicle. I installed hardware and updated design documents in support of the ongoing development of the Spaceport Command and Control System and applied firewall experience I gained during my spring 2017 semester to inspect and create firewall security policies as requested. Finally, I completed several online courses concerning networking fundamentals and Unix operating systems.

LMSS communication network design

The architecture of the telecommunication network as the first step in the design of the LMSS system is described. A set of functional requirements including the total number of users to be served by the LMSS are hypothesized. The design parameters are then defined at length and are systematically selected such that the resultant system is capable of serving the hypothesized number of users. The design of the backhaul link is presented. The number of multiple backhaul beams required for communication to the base stations is determined. A conceptual procedure for call-routing and locating a mobile subscriber within the LMSS network is presented. The various steps in placing a call are explained, and the relationship between the two sets of UHF and S-band multiple beams is developed. A summary of the design parameters is presented.

A fast microprocessor communication network design for interprocessor communications for an integrated flight control system

A node design with connectivity four is presented whose communication processor handles data at four million bits/sec on each of the four channels into the node, and on each of the four channels out of the node, for a total node capacity of 32 million bits/sec. An integrated flight control system real-time application of this communication network design is discussed. It is shown that such high speed node communication hardware, arranged in the topological configuration of a minimum diameter graph with connectivity four and all links active, has good potential for real time control applications requiring reliability, availability, and survivability characteristics.

PV-Diesel Hybrid SCADA Experiment Network Design

The essential features of an experimental network for renewable power system satellite based supervisory, control and data acquisition (SCADA) are communication links, controllers, diagnostic equipment and a hybrid power system. Required components for implementing the network consist of two satellite ground stations, to satellite modems, two 486 PCs, two telephone receivers, two telephone modems, two analog telephone lines, one digital telephone line, a hybrid-power system equipped with controller and a satellite spacecraft. In the technology verification experiment (TVE) conducted by Savannah State University and Florida Solar Energy Center, the renewable energy hybrid system is the Apex-1000 Mini-Hybrid which is equipped with NGC3188 for user interface and remote control and the NGC2010 for monitoring and basic control tasks. This power system is connected to a satellite modem via a smart interface, RS232. Commands are sent to the power system control unit through a control PC designed as PC1. PC1 is thus connected to a satellite model through RS232. A second PC, designated PC2, the diagnostic PC is connected to both satellite modems via separate analog telephone lines for checking modems'health. PC2 is also connected to PC1 via a telephone line. Due to the unavailability of a second ground station for the ACTS, one ground station is used to serve both the sending and receiving functions in this experiment. Signal is sent from the control PC to the Hybrid system at a frequency f(sub 1), different from f(sub 2), the signal from the hybrid system to the control PC. f(sub l) and f(sub 2) are sufficiently separated to avoid interference.
