J/ψ Near-Threshold Photoproduction off the Proton and Neutron with CLAS12

In recent years, J/? photoproduction in the near-threshold region has seen a renewed theoretical interest due to the wealth of information it has to offer. Near-threshold J/? photopro-duction proceeds through the exchange of gluons in the t-channel and is expected to provide unique insight about the nucleon gluonic gravitational form factors (GFFs). Previous studies at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab) in Virginia, USA, have already measured the total and differential cross section of J/? near-threshold photoproduction on the free proton. This thesis presents the first measurements of J/? near-threshold photoproduction on the bound proton and bound neutron in a deuteron target. The CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer at 12 GeV (CLAS12) based at JLab?s Hall B uses a 11 GeV electron beam impinging on a fixed liquid deuteron target. J/? is then produced via the exchange of a quasi-real photon and decays to a lepton pair which is detected along-side the recoil nucleon by CLAS12. Analysis procedures and in particular machine learning based techniques were developed in order to correctly identify final state particles and select J/? photoproduction events. The total and differential cross section of J/? near-threshold photoproduction on the bound proton and bound neutron were then measured from the detected J/? photoproduction events. The measurements of the cross sections on the bound proton and bound neutron agree well within their statistical uncertainty. This is consistent with the assumed two-gluon exchange production mechanism which is isospin invariant. Overall a first measurement of the J/? near-threshold photoproduction cross sections on the bound proton and bound neutron was achieved. A better understanding of the mechanical properties of the nucleon, such as pressure and mass distributions, can be obtained by relating J/? production to the nucleon GFFs. This opens the way for exciting new insights into the internal structure of the nucleon, and in particular of the nucleon?s gluonic content. An upcoming overhaul of the CLAS12 reconstruction will increase the reconstruction efficiency and the statis- tical precision of the preliminary measurements described in this thesis, with an expected gain in statistics of at least 50%. Future upgrades at JLab will allow to test some of the theoretical assumptions made in relating J/? near-threshold photoproduction to the nucleon GFFs

Observation of a Near-Threshold Proton Resonance in 11 B

A near-threshold proton resonance in 11 B at 𝐸 ex = 11.44 ± 0.04 MeV is observed via the reaction 10 Be⁢(𝑑,𝑛)⁢ 11 B → 10 Be + 𝑝 in inverse kinematics, measured with a beam of the radioactive isotope 10 Be. The resonance energy at 𝐸 res = 211⁢(40) keV is consistent with a proton signal observed by Ayyad et al. in the 𝛽-delayed proton decay of 11 Be. By comparison to a distorted wave Born approximation calculation, a 0.27(6) spectroscopic factor is extracted and a tentative (ℓ = 0) character is assigned for this resonance. The significant cross section in the proton-transfer (𝑑,𝑛) reaction, as well as the observation of its proton-decay signal, point to the threshold-resonance character of this state. The position of this state, its structure, and strong coupling to the 𝑠-wave continuum represent an ideal case to study quantum near-threshold many-body dynamics of unstable states. In conclusion, the presence of this state is an important step toward understanding the excessively large beta-delayed proton-decay branch of 11 Be.

Proton’s gluon GPDs at large skewness and gravitational form factors from near threshold heavy quarkonium photoproduction

We study the exclusive near threshold photoproduction of heavy quarkonium in the framework of the generalized parton distribution (GPD) factorization, taking the 𝐽/𝜓 production as an example. Because of the threshold kinematics, the Compton-like amplitudes are related to gluon GPDs at large skewness 𝜉, distinct from the common kinematics in asymptotic high energy where the skewness is typically small. We discuss the nature of large-𝜉 expansion of these amplitudes in terms of the moments of gluon GPDs in the large-𝜉 limit. Based on that, we propose several ways to extract the first few moments of the gluon GPDs from these amplitudes, with the leading ones corresponding to the gluonic gravitational or energy-momentum tensor form factors (GFFs). We apply these methods to analyze the recent near threshold 𝐽/𝜓 production measurements by the 𝐽/𝜓 007 experiment and GlueX Collaboration and find that the 𝜉 scaling of the measured differential cross sections is consistent with the asymptotic behavior. However, the current data are not accurate enough yet for a complete determination of the gluonic GFFs, and therefore we consider some prospects for better extractions in the future.

Evaluating methods to reduce duration of near-threshold fatigue crack growth rate measurements for low-alloy steels in hydrogen gas

Measurement of the near-threshold fatigue crack growth rate (da/dN) vs. stress-intensity factor range (∆K) relationship in hydrogen gas is essential for maximizing the calculated design fatigue life of high-pressure hydrogen storage vessels. However, such measurements are rarely performed, since the low cyclic loading frequencies applied in standard practice lead to prohibitively protracted test durations. The objective of this study was to demonstrate two means for reducing test durations when measuring near-threshold da/dN vs. ΔK relationships under decreasing ΔK for low-alloy pressure vessel steels in hydrogen gas: 1) imposing steeper K-gradients relative to the recommended limits in standards such as ASTM E647, and 2) increasing cyclic loading frequency relative to typical values applied during fatigue crack growth testing of low-alloy steels in hydrogen gas. Recognizing that steeper K-gradients could amplify loading-history effects, test methods employing this approach were designed to mitigate such effects by either maintaining constant K max or gradually increasing the K-gradient as the threshold was approached. Although the varying K-gradient method was vulnerable to loading-history effects in the form of plasticity-induced crack closure, particularly at lower stress ratio (R) and higher starting K max values, these effects could be compensated by applying the adjusted compliance ratio (ACR) method. Here, it was demonstrated that steeper K-gradients in concert with increased cyclic loading frequency reduced the duration of near-threshold fatigue crack growth tests in hydrogen gas by more than 99% relative to standard practices.

Bayesian Inferring Nucleon Gravitational Form Factors via Near-Threshold 𝐽/𝜓 Photoproduction

With Bayesian inference, we investigate the impact of recent near-threshold 𝐽/𝜓 production measurements by the 𝐽/𝜓⁢007 experiment and GlueX Collaboration on the extraction of proton gravitational form factors. We apply the generalized parton distribution framework at the next to leading order and demonstrate a stable expansion for the near-threshold kinematics. We find that the experimental constraints are in good agreement with the state-of-the-art lattice simulations, where negative 𝐶 𝑞 ⁡(𝑡) and 𝐶 𝑔 ⁡(𝑡) are strongly preferred. This highlights a great potential to extract them from future high-precision experiments.

Measurement of the near-threshold 𝐽/𝜓 photoproduction cross section with the CLAS12 experiment

We present measurements of the total and differential cross sections for near-threshold 𝐽/𝜓 photoproduction obtained with the CLAS12 detector at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The results are based on data collected during the fall 2018 and spring 2019 running periods, using electron beams with energies of 10.6 and 10.2 GeV, respectively, scattered off a liquid-hydrogen target. Near-threshold 𝐽/𝜓 photoproduction offers a unique sensitivity to the strong interaction in the nonperturbative regime of quantum chromodynamics (QCD). The energy dependence of the cross section constrains the underlying 𝐽/𝜓 production mechanisms, including multigluon exchange and potential baryonic excitations. Additionally, the 𝑡 dependence of the differential cross section can be related to the transverse spatial distribution of gluons in the proton, providing critical input for theoretical descriptions of the gluonic structure of the proton. An interpretation of the results in terms of the gluon content of the proton is presented, providing new experimental constraints on QCD-inspired models of the proton structure and the role of gluonic degrees of freedom in hadronic mass generation.

Rosenbluth-like separation of the $J/ψ$ near-threshold photoproduction: An access to the gluon gravitational form factors at high t

Here, we perform analysis of the near-threshold $J/\psi $ photoproduction data off the proton based on two theoretical approaches, GPD \cite{Guo3} and holographic \cite{Zahed2}, that represent the differential cross sections as powers of the skewness parameter with coefficients that depend only on the momentum transfer $t$. This allows to separate kinematically the corresponding coefficient functions, in much the same way as this is done for the electric and magnetic form factors using the Rosenbluth separation. We examine the independence of the extracted functions with the photon beam energy. These functions, under additional assumptions, are related to the proton's gluon Gravitational Form Factors (gGFFs). We compare the extracted functions with lattice calculations of the gGFFs in the region of $0.5<|t|<2$~GeV$^{2}$, where they overlap. Such analysis demonstrates the possibility of extracting some combinations of the gGFFs from the data at high $t$, complementary to the lattice calculations available in the low $t$ region. However, higher statistics are needed to more accurately check the predicted scaling behavior of the data and compare with the lattice results, thus testing and comparing the theoretical assumptions used in the GPD and holographic models.

Photoproduction of η c , b near threshold

We analyze the photoproduction of η c , b off a proton in the threshold region, in terms of C-odd gluonic correlations in the off-forward proton matrix element. Near threshold, the skewness is large, leading to a production amplitude that is dominated by four C-odd twist-3 gluon GPDs. We use the QCD instanton vacuum to estimate these C-odd contributions in the proton. The results are used to estimate the differential cross sections for coherent photoproduction of η c , b in the threshold region, at current electron facilities. Near-threshold photoproduction of J/ of a proton with the CLAS12 experiment

The photo-production of vector mesons off the proton has long been established as an important tool to access the gluon content of the nucleon. In particular, the photo-production of J/Psi near the threshold energy has been related to the Gravitational Form Factors of the gluons which provide information about the mass and the force distributions in the nucleon. In this talk, I will present results on the near-threshold photoproduction of J/Psi using data taken in 2018 and 2019 by the CLAS12 detector at Jefferson Lab, with an electron beam impinging on a liquid-hydrogen target. This measurement is expected to provide direct insight on the gluons distribution inside the proton.

Photonuclear cross sections for the 197 Au ⁢(𝛾, 𝑝⁢𝑛)⁢ 195⁢𝑚 Pt reaction near threshold

Platinum radioisotopes are of growing interest for targeted cancer therapy and diagnostic imaging because their decay delivers highly localized radiation doses in tissue, herewith enabling precise DNA damage through Auger-electron emission. Developing production technologies that provide platinum isotopes with high specific activity is essential in radioisotope therapy. Photonuclear reactions on stable nuclei offer a viable accelerator-based route for isotope production when supported by reliable cross-section data. We report photonuclear cross-section measurements for the 197 Au(γ, pn) 195m Pt reaction at incident γ-ray energies of 27, 29, and 31 MeV using the activation method. The measurements were performed by irradiating a stack of concentric-ring gold targets with a quasi-monoenergetic γ-ray beam provided by the High Intensity Gamma-ray Source (HI γS). The induced 195m Pt activity was quantified using off-line γ-ray spectroscopy. These data provide the first experimental constraints on the 197 Au(γ, pn) 195m Pt cross section in the near-threshold region. Furthermore, the comparison of the measured excitation function to PHITS and TALYS calculations indicates that the reaction becomes measurable only near 30 MeV and that substantially higher bremsstrahlung end-point energies are required for practically meaningful production.

Near-threshold resonances in C 11 and the B 10 ( p , α ) Be 7 aneutronic reaction

The nucleus 11 C plays an important role in the boron-proton fusion reactor environment as a catalyzer of the 10 B(p,α) 7 Be reaction which, by producing a long-lived isotope of 7 Be, poisons the aneutronic fusion process 11 B(p,2α) 4 He. The low-energy cross section of 10 B(p,α) 7 Be depends on the near-threshold states 7/2$^{+}_{1}$, 5/2$^{+}_{2}$, 5/2$^{+}_{3}$ in 11 C whose properties are primarily known from the indirect measurements. Here we investigate the continuum-coupling induced collectivization of these resonances in the shell model embedded in the continuum. We predict a significant enhancement of the 10 B(p,α) 7 Be cross section at energies accessible to the laser-driven hot plasma facilities.

Measurement of the J/ψ photoproduction cross section over the full near-threshold kinematic region

Here, we report the total and differential cross sections for $J/\psi$ photoproduction with the large acceptance GlueX spectrometer for photon beam energies from the threshold at 8.2 GeV up to 11.44 GeV and over the full kinematic range of momentum transfer squared, $t$. Such coverage facilitates the extrapolation of the differential cross sections to the forward ($t = 0$) point beyond the physical region. The forward cross section is used by many theoretical models and plays an important role in understanding $J/\psi$ photoproduction and its relation to the $J/\psi$-proton interaction. These measurements of $J/\psi$ photoproduction near threshold are also crucial inputs to theoretical models that are used to study important aspects of the gluon structure of the proton, such as the gluon Generalized Parton Distribution (GPD) of the proton, the mass radius of the proton, and the trace anomaly contribution to the proton mass. We observe possible structures in the total cross section energy dependence and find evidence for contributions beyond gluon exchange in the differential cross section close to threshold, both of which are consistent with contributions from open-charm intermediate states.

Bendability parameter for twisted ribbons to describe longitudinal wrinkling and delineate the near-threshold regime

We propose a dimensionless bendability parameter, ε -1 =[(h/W) 2 ⁢T -1 ] -1 , for wrinkling of thin, twisted ribbons with thickness h, width W, and tensional strain T. Bendability permits efficient collapse of data for wrinkle onset, wavelength, critical stress, and residual stress, demonstrating longitudinal wrinkling's primary dependence on this parameter. This parameter also allows us to distinguish the highly bendable range (ε -1 >20) from moderately bendable samples (ε -1 ϵ(0,20]). We identify scaling relations to describe longitudinal wrinkles that are valid across our entire set of simulated ribbons. When restricted to the highly bendable regime, simulations confirm theoretical near-threshold (NT) predictions for wrinkle onset and wavelength.

Near-Threshold Dipole Strength in 10 Be with Isoscalar Character

Isoscalar dipole transitions are a distinctive fingerprint of cluster structures. A 1 − resonance at 7.27(10) MeV, located just below the 𝛼-emission threshold, has been observed in the deuteron inelastic scattering reactions off 10 Be. The deformation lengths of the excited states in 10 Be below 9 MeV have been inferred from the differential cross sections using coupled channel calculations. This observed 1 − resonance has isoscalar characteristics and exhausts approximately 5%–15% of the isoscalar dipole energy-weighted sum rule, providing evidence for pronounced 𝛼 cluster structure in 10 Be. The Gamow coupled channel approach supports this interpretation and suggests the near-threshold effect might be playing an important role in this excitation energy domain. Here, the 𝛼 +𝛼 +𝑛 +𝑛 four-body calculation reproduces the observed enhanced dipole strength, implying that the four-body cluster structure is essential to describe the 1 − states in 10 Be.

Measurement of J/psi Production near Threshold in J/psi -> µ+µ-

This dissertation presents a detailed analysis of J/psi photoproduction near the kinematic threshold in the J/psi -> µ+µ- decay channel, based on data collected by the GlueX experiment at Jefferson Lab. The study aims to probe the structure of the proton and the underlying mechanisms of heavy vector quarkonium photoproduction, contributing to a deeper understanding of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) in the non-perturbative regime. The measurement focuses on the total and differential cross-sections of J/psi photoproduction and explores various theoretical models, including two-gluon and three-gluon exchange, open-charm contributions, and potential exotic states like pentaquarks. The experimental setup, featuring a high-precision tagged photon beam and advanced particle identification techniques, allowed for the separation of J/psi events from background processes. The analysis of the J/psi -> µ+µ- channel yields cross-sections that complement previous measurements in the J/psi -> e+e- decay mode, providing new insights into gluon dynamics at low momentum transfer. This work also examines the systematic uncertainties and provides a comprehensive comparison of results with theoretical predictions, highlighting the role of gluon exchange mechanisms in the photoproduction process. The results presented in this dissertation help refine our understanding of proton structure and QCD dynamics, offering a robust dataset for future theoretical and experimental studies in hadronic physics.

We predict cross sections for the Electron-Ion Collider and the Jefferson Lab experiments.

Near-Threshold Photoemission from Graphene-Coated Cu(110)

In this article, the brightness of electron beams emitted from photocathode sources plays a critical role in determining the performance of x-ray free-electron lasers and ultrafast electron-diffraction applications. In order to achieve the maximum brightness, the electrons need to be emitted from a photocathode with the lowest-possible mean transverse energy (MTE). Recent investigations have shown that capping a Cu(110) photocathode with a monolayer of graphene can protect the quantum efficiency (QE) from long-term exposure to varying vacuum conditions. However, there have been no studies that investigate the effects that a monolayer of graphene has on the MTE. Here, we report on measurements of a graphene-coated Cu(110) single crystal near the photoemission threshold for room and liquid-nitrogen temperatures. At room temperature, a minimum MTE of 25 meV is measured at 295 nm. At liquid-nitrogen temperatures, a minimum MTE of 9 meV is measured at the photoemission threshold of 290 nm.

First near-threshold measurements of the 13 C($α, n$ 1 ) 16 O reaction for low-background-environment characterization

The modeling of background sources in large volume detection systems requires accurate nuclear cross sections for a variety of reactions. Among the most important are (α,n) on light nuclei, where α particles, up to ≈9 MeV, are produced from the decay of actinides present in trace amounts in detection and structural material. In order to model the neutron energy spectra and production of other secondary particles, the partial cross sections are needed. Yet very little experimental data exists for these partial cross sections because past measurements, hampered by the experimental challenges of neutron detection, have focused mostly on total reaction cross section measurements. Here, in this paper, the partial cross section of the 13 C(α,n 1 ) 16 O reaction is reported for the first time. The measurements were made near the reaction threshold using a high energy resolution helium spectrometer. The measurements show a rapidly increasing cross section, which quickly becomes a significant fraction of the total reaction cross section. Measurements are compared with previous theory estimates and differences of more than an order of magnitude are found. A comparison is made with new total cross section measurements and the current level of consistency is demonstrated.
